solo_soprano22 -> Hair coming out, BUT just one one side (2/28/2008 9:37:19 PM)

So, I do the same thing to my entire head of hair. I do have problems with stress/depression, and of course, remember that African-American hair isn't the same as the rest of the ethnicities (there are probably exceptions). I'm wondering though...why just ONE side? Even if the stress is making it fall out or break off, why not my whole head? Is there something that could be making just this one side (the left side) weaker? Any ideas?

I didn't notice it until I realized that one side is considerably longer and the side that's short now is thinning. My mom keeps fussing talking about curlers...but I really don't curl it that much to cause that...plus it's just the one side.

Konstantinos -> RE: Hair coming out, BUT just one one side (2/29/2008 5:07:59 PM)

uhm if the one side grows and the other not at all then idk. im a guy and all but i had something similar. when i was younger and my facial hair started growing , one of the sides i dont remember which one grew faster than the other. but that stopped eventually. granted you arent a teen so i dont know!

Jenny-Fair -> RE: Hair coming out, BUT just one one side (2/29/2008 5:17:13 PM)

My grandmother has...alopecia areata? Does that sound right? Anyway, it's hair loss and it's related to stress (she thinks) and other problems.

She loses it in odd places. And sometimes it changes. And in one spot it grew back in black instead of white like the rest!

So, the one side thing isn't all that strange.

hahaha maybe more old people should have stress then!

agapetos -> RE: Hair coming out, BUT just one one side (3/2/2008 2:53:15 PM)

It could be stress.

You may be twisting it, pulling it when you're stressed and not really thinking about what you're doing (you could even be doing this when you're asleep).

It could be from products you may be using to style your hair.

It could be caused by an underactive thyroid.

stellaluna -> RE: Hair coming out, BUT just one one side (3/3/2008 10:19:20 AM)

This may sound dumb, but do you always sleep on the same side? I used to and that whole side of my hair was thinner than the other. I had to train myself to alternate, even though I wasn't as comfortable. It worked, though.

solo_soprano22 -> RE: Hair coming out, BUT just one one side (3/3/2008 1:36:36 PM)

I actually did think about that, but I can't really be for sure. I go to sleep one way then wake up another way...so I don't know how long I stay in what position.

I know it could be stress and such....I'm just wondering why it's ONE side and not both or neither. [8|] And it seems to have happened all of a sudden.

stellaluna -> RE: Hair coming out, BUT just one one side (3/3/2008 2:18:11 PM)

Well, my first instinct was alopecia, but I don't know enough about it to know if it can happen to only one side of your head. Have you called a dermatologist?

solo_soprano22 -> RE: Hair coming out, BUT just one one side (3/3/2008 2:27:24 PM)

Not yet. I wasn't really sure what kind of doc to see about it...I think it's breaking off+thinning, and maybe just not growing or something. My mom yells at me EVERY day (and I'm oh so very sick of it) that I don't need to use hot stuff on my hair; I keep telling her that I don't think that's it (and I only use curlers for special occasions, or on lowest heating when I need to use it close together). She just thinks she knows everything (while she claims that I think I know everything), but I'm really almost certain that "heat" didn't do this. And with her little "theory" she can't explain why one side would do it while the other doesn't. I'm thinking maybe there's some underlying problem on the left side of my head. I know I have some headaches over there, but I'm pretty sure that's from this big cavity I have that I need to get a root canal in (waiting for some $$ for that).

I'm just trying to think up plausible reasons so I can get it figured out and get my mom to be quiet. [8|] She says I'm not listening, but I am...I just really think she's wrong about this-- and she always tries to find a way to blame an illness on something that I do or don't do.

stellaluna -> RE: Hair coming out, BUT just one one side (3/4/2008 10:26:03 AM)

Maybe your mom yelling is causing the problem. [;)]

(Don't tell her I said that!)

I agree. I have Alopecia Areata. And I only lose hair in certian places.http://www.naaf.org/default2.asp

Alopecia areata (al-oh-PEE-shah air-ee-AH-tah) is a highly unpredictable, autoimmune skin disease resulting in the loss of hair on the scalp and elsewhere on the body. This common but very challenging and capricious disease affects approximately 1.7 percent of the population overall, including more than 5 million people in the United States alone. Due to the fact that much of the public is still not familiar with alopecia areata, the disease can have a profound impact on one's life and functional status, both at work and at school.

In alopecia areata, the affected hair follicles are mistakenly attacked by a person's own immune system (white blood cells), resulting in the arrest of the hair growth stage. Alopecia areata usually starts with one or more small, round, smooth bald patches on the scalp and can progress to total scalp hair loss (alopecia totalis) or complete body hair loss (alopecia universalis).

Ok, this is really drastic right? But hey "drastic" is my middle name. Soooooo, welllllll There's this guy at church, he has cancer, God forbid, right, but hey best to nip it in the bud! I say ! He has lost his hair on one side. Hey perhaps not, but should look all round, I reckon!

Giulia -> RE: Hair coming out, BUT just one one side (3/9/2008 9:41:32 AM)

Know, my bro, her used to blw dry his hair for hours all the time, I told him "don't do it", he still did. He's bald now. Not telling you anything, just saying!

He had curly hair and didn't like it, same with my sister, she don't liek it! I like my curls, just not many know how to make them come out more naturally. Look frizzy mostly.

Curls rock, don't try to straighten! I reckon God has locks! Check out the song of songs!

Jenny-Fair -> RE: Hair coming out, BUT just one one side (3/9/2008 12:44:51 PM)

Giulia, cancer victims lose their hair because of the chemo, not because of the cancer. The OP would know if she was having chemo.

Giulia -> RE: Hair coming out, BUT just one one side (3/13/2008 2:11:07 AM)

This person I know has lost it because of the tumour he has on that side of his head, he is also getting his ear chopped off on the other side because of it.

Hope the best and pray your hair grows back and that there is nothing wrong and if there is that there is healing for you.

Giulia -> RE: Hair coming out, BUT just one one side (3/16/2008 10:31:57 AM)

Just an update. The person I know who had to get his ear chopped off has been healed after we prayed for him. All the cancer has dissapeared from his ear so they won't have to chop it[sm=funny.gif][sm=hippiesmile.gif][sm=icon_smile_sing.gif]praise God!

Doctror announced a strange happening.

Uh, I'm not sure if you're familiar with African-American hair, but straightening is a must for me. Curling is different though.

It can damage your hair though ~ don't know if it will aggrivate anything (like stress) which could contribute to the problem though...

solo_soprano22 -> RE: Hair coming out, BUT just one one side (3/22/2008 11:54:55 PM)

Odd thing. My scalp hurts rather badly on that side. The parts that hurt the worst are where the hair is coming out the worst. This isn't hurting in my brain (of course), but on my actual scalp. I can't figure out WHY it's doing this... but it hurts worse when touched (quite badly even when it's not touched) and when I move my hair any. I know the follicles have nerves, and I'm sure that's what's hurting, but I can't figure out the cause. Pain meds won't take it away... It's like a soreness and burning.

Well, hair straightening is known to cause hair loss and is the likely reason you have this problem. It is extremely hard on the hair, and after doing it for a considerable amount of time, nearly everyone loses a substantial amount of hair.

If "straightening is a must" for you, then losing your hair is the price you will likely have to pay to have it. Just know you may end up saying, "Oh, I only have four hairs left on my head, but at least my four hairs are silky and straight!"[sm=raisedbrows.gif]

solo_soprano22 -> RE: Hair coming out, BUT just one one side (3/23/2008 12:47:00 PM)

I really don't think straightening is the problem, especially after all of what's happened lately. That's fine if that's what you think it is; I'm pretty sure it's some other issue though.

Can we move on to medical problems, rather than "heat" problems? Thanks. I've already thought through all of that and don't need a lecture on it, please. Just move on.

Sara, I think it may have something to do with my actual follicles-- not anything that's happening to the shaft of my hair, since the pain started. I found a woman with my same symptoms (burning and all) and she mentioned it might be "BSS," but I don't know what that is, and research has come up empty. She's in a different country though, so I'm thinking it may have a different name here.

Dontcha just love when someone starts a thread and asks what could be causing their problem and then get their skivvies in a bunch when the answers given don't line up with what they want to hear?

Over and out!

AFAIK BSS stands for "Beauty Supply Store" and they basically sell weaves, often made of human hair. If that's what this woman means, it may be that her weave is pulling at her own hair and making her scalp sore.

solo_soprano22 -> RE: Hair coming out, BUT just one one side (3/23/2008 4:55:34 PM)

Yeah, I knew that. She seemed to be talking about it as if it were an illness of some kind... plus she doesn't have weave. [&:] A lot of black women wear weaves (I don't like them), but she's Indian and likes her hair... I think. Lol.

agapetos -> RE: Hair coming out, BUT just one one side (3/23/2008 6:32:34 PM)

Solo, have you spoken to a doctor about this. I know you may feel doctored out, but I wonder if it's worth getting checked out ~ it could be skin infection or something that's easily treated.
