Oh I wish I had advice on sleep, but Hunter was his own unique self when it came to sleeping. No matter what I did sometimes he still wouldn't sleep. Now that he turned a year old he sleeps great and I haven't changed a thing. Its like it had to be on his timing...stinker! I really hope the next one is a great sleeper from the get go, but if not I will be somewhat prepared I guess. My sister gave me the Ezzo book and though I read it, I laid it on a self never to read it again. Not saying everything in the book I disagreed with, but majority of it I let go in one ear and out the other. My sister swears by it, but I do not. She even had her lactation consultant tell her to burn the book.

I'd never heard of Ezzo till I came on here.

Like I said, we took the GKGW class at our church. Things we gained from it...knowing that it's okay to expect our kids to respect us and teaching us practical ways to do that. The only thing I didn't like was their focus on spanking, often as if it was the only discipline available (not to start a debate about spanking...that would belong in the one-stop thread). I have never read Babywise, so only know what I have heard here is in it. What I have heard about scheduling babies, I do not agree with at all.

I had a friend who was/had taken the GKGW parenting class taught by our ss teachers. Anyway, I was very, very uncomfortable with some of the things that she started doing -- like how she would spank her child while screaming at her. The other problem I had was that she started implying that I should be spanking my child like she did. She started having the attitude that her way was the right way after all, it is God's way... I'd already had parenting training, and I had worked with parents. IMHO, what she was doing was bordering on abuse. So, while I haven't read/attended any of the Ezzo training, I have seen it in others and don't like what I have seen.

I have never read the book, but I've heard bits and pieces about it on here. So, far the only good thing I heard was the book had helpful advice about how to teach your baby the difference between night and day. I'm guessing it said to try to keep the lights off and not make a lot of noise and make it borning for feeds and diapers. But, every baby book says that. I especially don't agree with the scheduling part of it. I like routine and all but I have totally different way of helping my babies find a routine.

I was just reading some pro-Ezzo stuff on the internet. And, it seems like the motivation behind it to make babies convenient for the parents. While I do some things for my babies to make it convenient for me, that's not my whole motivation. Like co-sleeping. I believe it makes Jimmy feel secure and creates a special bond, but also I like to get good sleep, so co-sleeping is convenient for me too. I nurse Jimmy often, not just because it makes him healthy and grow to his full potential, but also because he's happier for longer periods of time, so that makes it nice for me. I think it's important to find a good balance of making our babies feel happy and healthy, but also to help the parents feel happy and mentally healthy. It is important to have a little bit of convenience as parents, but not at the expense of our babies' health and happiness. quote:
From Dr. Heldzinger: We started implementing the principles in Baby Wise with our 4th baby (unfortunately we did not learn them before.) What a difference it made to our family. Our first child was a demand fed baby and it was a nightmare. He was more demanding for a long time as a child. With the third we implemented parent-controlled feeding out of our own and with the 4th we used the Ezzo method. It was not like having a baby in the family at all, but rather just like having another child in the family. What a blessing. HERE (emphasis mine)

Christina, I just wanted to comment that I love seeing how far you've come since having your first newborn. It's great to see new moms turning into great moms!

I voted I agree with some of what the book I have read said. Concept only, not methodology or motivation. For instance, I have no problem with the idea of training a child not to throw food on the floor. However, my motivation is not less mess for me to clean up, nor a perfectly tidy child. Kids are messy. The reason I would want to begin training for a general sense of tidyness and restraint is that it is an important social skill for successful life. I don't see anything wrong with starting early, but it would certainly not be a matter of punishment or shame for the baby. I have no problem with swatting or spanking for certain things, but I am learning more and more that a No accompanied with a smile and some physical direction makes a spank unnecessary most of the time. For instance, Biruk has lately started to resist diaper and clothing changes. I could swat, but so far a very authoritative NO usually stops it immediately. If not, I just lean over and hug him until he stops trying to jump off the table. Likewise, I don't think there's anything wrong with a baby sleeping through the night (IMO, it's wonderful), however it's not "God's way", and night-waking at 9 months isn't going to permanently damage the child's character. Babies are so different I don't see how they can make blanket statements like all children are able to sleep through the night at such and such an age, or all children should be down to three nursings a day at 6 months (and how on earth could a mom keep up a reasonable supply with only 3 nursing sessions in 24 hours?). I personally feel that the mess, the noise, and the inconvenience that comes along with having children has been good for me and the development of my character. Sure, I *could* smack my 3 yo when he eats spaghetti with his hands and I have to dig sauce out of his ears, but I would have missed a great picture and deprived my husband of some serious enjoyment in his kids. For some reason, Spaghetti-Face struck Josiah as really funny, and that doesn't happen often.

That really means a lot to me. When you said that, I was thinking, how would she know, she hasn't known me that long. But, I looked over at the date you joined and where you're from and realized you're 2jsmom from Spokane!!! How did I miss the name change?!?!

I completely agree. Timmy is the world's best sleeper. He faithfully goes to bed at 8, faithfully wakes up at 7, and faithfully takes a 2.5 hour nap at 1:30 everyday. He never wakes in the night unless he's sick. And he was getting one or two bottles in the middle of the night at 11 months old. If Jimmy only nursed three times a day, he would literally starve to death. There's no way my breasts could produce enough in those three times to sustain him the whole day.
