You don't have to apologize for the truth, doink!
One reason we sound more similar when we sing is because we're taught to sing differently than we're taught to pronounce words. In America, serious choirs mimic the King's College Choir.

I didn't say we were doing it correctly! But that's how we're admonished!
In the south, we're allowed to chew our diphthongs and drawl consonants. In choirs, we're to hold out the first part of a diphthong and tag the last vowel sound on like a consonant. In choirs, we're also taught to hit a consonant quickly and move on to the vowel and not draw them out.

They were from Manchester. Mancs have a Manc accent - they don't put it on! (of all the accents someone might put on, I don't think Manc is one of them, lol)

I only know what they are from singing and studying other languages. In the south, we call them syllables!

So, over there a pint is 20oz., huh? Our pints are 16oz. unless you go to an Irish style pub, then the beer comes in a 20oz. glass.

Yeah, I know but I never noticed anyone else from England having such a pronounced accent while singing.

Well you don't sound like you do when you talk!
(Actually, there's a lot of French singers here that the same thing happens to them, Celine Dion is the only one I've heard keep her French accent while singing.)

I've got an old episode of 'Dempsey and Makepeace' on. Don't know if anyone has seen it but it's a cop show. He's an American in London and she's a Brit and they're partners in the Force.
He asks
'What's haggis?'
