I read this two ways, because one of my cousins mother-in-law supposedly "reads cards" and can read people's fortunes. which is occultic, if it's true so i stay clear of that.

also tarot cards are occultic and evil.

as far as card games like Old Maid or Concentratin, iIthink it's just a game.

Gambling. I have been told it is not the wisest use of God's money, but I am a hypocrite, because I have played the lottery a couple of times and do invest in stocks, which is like gambling.

I can't imagine why playing cards as such would be evil. And card games, even the ones most associated with "gambling," usually involve more than just an assumption of completely random chances and wild guesswork. Skilled players of poker, blackjack, and the stock market all combine risk and skill to some degree.

The closest I can come is that I would consider it sinful to hope God would help me win money through cards by essentially helping me gamble. I would consider that sinful because essentially I'd be asking for his benefit in gaining materially at someone else's expense, just so that I could be richer than I was before.

I would also find it somewhat disturbing, or even sinful, to suggest that there is some mystical or metaphysical power that lies behind the distribution of the cards, especially if - as in the case of the use of tarot decks - that power is something other than God. But that has to do with specific beliefs about cards, not about the cards themselves.

I would have to say that anything can become a sin. I think that first it needs to be put into context, and then basically it would be a case by case situation. That way, it doesn't become the "RULE". I think that it hinges on the first question, which is, has it become and IDOL in your life. Does it take away from time with HIM? Do you engage in that activity more than engage with HIM? I think more often than not, we need to evaluate each "thing" on an individual basis, and that way we avoid making more rules. And stay more focused on the heart, which is what Jesus wants us to do.

Geez, my kids learned math from playing cards! Gin, Gin-Rummy, poker, spite-n-malice, crazy eights, Uno- all of them require keeping score or counting the values of the cards to determine if you won the hand or not. We use chips, buttons, jelly beans, M&M's, and other fun things to ante up with. The kids also learned the art of the bluff and how to tell if someone is bluffing.

playing cards is not a sin, just games.

Likewise, I learned how to gamble at summer camp betting starbursts.

I don't think cards are evil. It's a form of recreation, that's all. There's nothing one with someone relaxing one way while someone else likes to relax another way.

I'd hate to think of those hours playing Spider Solitaire and Freecell was all a sin.

I haven't played Freecell in a few weeks. I only play Spider on medium, I win usually about half the time, but not lately. Spider on easy is too boring and on expert requires too many brain cells.

ETA- I think that's the answer! Playing cards on levels that you would burn too many brain cells is a sin.

Playing cards with your friends on occasion is perfectly fine. But playing cards for money is gambling. That would be a sin.

Is playing cards " evil"?
Is planting a tree " evil"?
Our Lord died on one, Peter died upsidedown on one.
Is it, that they are evil, or how they are used that could be evil?
Two things that Satan ( who is evil ) loves are--ARGUMENTS and ANGER!

This still has yet to be proven by any of you who claim it.

I think the card thing has been pretty well beat to death but I would like to comment on this quote fromthe OP:
quote:

But then, one could argue "why would you play cards when you could read the Bible?" - to which I couldn't reply.
THis is typical of the western (esp US) individualistic spirituality. CS Lewis said that "the bible knows nothing of solitary religion." Playing cards can be a good relational excercise, either between parents and kids or couples. Maybe even a bunch of singles.

Of course praying and bible study are important, but so is relating to your brothers and sisters.

Remember, this is off topic. If one wants to discuss gambling they can either see if we have a current thread on the topic and if not, start a thread. But this is not the place to discuss gambling.

I was listening to a sermon by Lester Roloff and in it he said that playing cards were "of the Devil" and that no child of God should play.

Are playing cards "evil"?

Sometimes I play Go Fish with my son.

At any rate, thanks for the heads up. I won't be listening to anything Lester Roloff might have to say.

Lester Roloff was a fine man and a great man of God; yes he did have some "Legalistic" problems in my opinion; but I knew him personally and admired his work before he went to see Jesus.

He founded the "Light House Homes" for boys who had been deemed incorrugable, and the "Rebecca Home for Girls" in Texas. He helped many a young lost person find their way and he fought the State of Texas for the right to home school, etc.

Now he was also against the "Flying Barooms" (commercial airlines), movies, TV, modern music, etc. But as I say he saved many a confused yourg person from a life of perdition and death.

So please before we are too honery and mean to Roloff; how many young runaways have we devoted our lives to bring to Christ and keep away from the devil.

Thanks
RC

Many many years ago I was at the Bethesda Home For Girls in Hattiesburg. After I went home, I strayed for many years, but I never forgot what I learned there, and the conviction of it is what nagged and nagged at me until I returned to The Lord. At my most rebellious point in life, I still respected and loved Brother Roloff, and I have found many of his sermons online and listen to them now. He was a great man of God, and they don't make preachers (at least with whom I am familiar) like him anymore, with his unique blend of deep compassion for the lost and righteous anger at the sin that destroys lives. It took me years of learning the hard way (totally unnecessary as I'd been given the truth) to finally admit that in general, he'd been right all along. Even the aspects of his teachings that I don't live by, if I had to choose, I would rather err on his side than the other way.

I think Lester, like many pastors, have some great "gems" in their ministry... I have seen watched him a few times and have found him quite knowledagble...

However, on this particular topic, I do find him a bit silly....

May I add, why would anyone spend time on a forum when they could read the Bible?

I just joined this group too. However, I am a long time Christian.
I feel that a person should ask God about these things. My personal experience may help on this.
When I was in college my best friend was a Methodist Preacher. One day he said to me, "You ought to stop smoking." This was all in 1947. Well you know I really enjoyed smoking and could not find clear information in the Bible about smoking. I asked him why. He said,"Itis bad for your health."
"My lands, John!" I said, "You are about three hundred pounds and we all know that is the number one killer. I find that hard to believe." In 1947 we did not know about all the cancer, etc. that came from smoking.
However, on the way home I prayed and asked God to tell me if I should stop smoking. After all, God is the great communicator-a burning bush just to get Moses attention, etc. Also, I was raise to listen to preachers. They are not always right but they are known for caring about people.

That after noon I was reading in my Bible and Paul told the people, "You know there is no sin in eating meat. However, If you eat meat you will loose your rapor to bring the idol worshipers to Salvation for they consider that a sin." (My paraphrazing) Then he told them they had to be the stronger and not eat the meat for his brother's sake and to be asble to influence them for Christ. Well that did it for me. I knew God was talking to me that I had to stop smoking. I did with God's help that night on the way to work.
Now when people ask me about cards, drinking alcohol, divorce I tell them to ask God. It has done wonders.
