RichLP -> suggestions for giving away stuff (3/10/2008 12:13:06 PM)

I have some old clothes and shoes I do not need, and would rather give them to some church or group than to chuck them in the trash. Suggestions?

You could offer them free on Freecycle or the free section of Craigslist.
You could give them to a charity that has a thrift store such as Goodwill or Salvation Army.

If they are not good enough to be sold, you could give them to a local homeless shelter.

You could bring them to a church or group...

So Rich, what'd you do with the stuff?

We give our stuff to Goodwill as there is a store and drop off centre down the street.

My mom gives her stuff to an organization for people with Cerebral Palsy. They pick it up from her home, take it to a store that sells it and then the money goes back to the organization. It is good for her because she can't pack all her stuff up in her car and take it somewhere.

Take it to Salvation Army or list it on Craigslist for someone to pick it up.

I give mine to my local Rescue Mission to use.

You could put an ad in the paper, or take it to Goodwill or the Salvation Army as people have stated, or you can take it to your local church!

Suggestions for what? My suggestion is:

give them to some church or group.

Are you asking how to find out who? Or how to do it?

I would donate them to a men's homeless shelter in your area. Find it, call them, drop the stuff off.

If you don't have a homeless shelter, I would call the Salvation Army, and find out where to drop the stuff off.

Or post an ad on craigslist, if you have one for your town.

We mostly divide our giveaways between the various thrift stores in town: Goodwill, Salvation Army, Women's Shelter, etc.

First I think about who I know that may be able to use the things.

Then I would think about what the church needs (they may not need clothes but I've restocked their nursery with quality used baby things and perhaps they need tools or furniture or games).

If it doesn't fit either of those categories I'd take it to the Lutheran secondhand store (and if they don't need it I drop it off at Goodwill). They work with volunteers only so the money goes to many local programs (for the poor, abused women, counseling, etc).

Every so often I have something I think is too nice to throw away and not quite nice enough for sale so I freecycle those.

Take them to a church, like my church has a store house for those who are in need of such items.

you can take them to Salvation Army or Goodwill

You probably live to far from me,but I would take the things you don't need and give them to the homeless. We feed the homeless once a month in the city and we collect items for them.

jodavi -> RE: suggestions for giving away stuff (4/25/2008 3:16:40 PM)

Freecycle. 'did not realize how many people are in real need using freecycle to just being able to put clothes on their kids.

doinkdom -> RE: suggestions for giving away stuff (4/25/2008 3:20:27 PM)

I take baby stuff to the local Crisis Pregnancy office.

Men's clothes go to the local men's rescue mission or are actually given to men we know.

Women's and kids clothes are taken to My Sister's House office.

I might shop at Goodwill, but I usually take stuff elsewhere.

Many section 8 housing complexes take donations, too.
