Speaking of comics.... I have one of Vicki from Rose is Rose...

Some people took offense at it..... cause she shows a little too much in the leg department.

Rose is Rose is one of the tamest cartoons on this earth! Someone get bent out of the alter ego's legs???? ACK! I guess they never read the comic strip.

With all that there is to be concerned about in the world, the little pictures that we chose to represent us is a tiny issue.

Hmm, well, I'd prefer a longer skirt, too, but I wouldn't be upset about it.

BTW, thanks, Trish.

I can see why you like it Rach. [:D]

And I don't find it a problem.

car2ner -> RE: Avatars, free expression, or offensive to some. (3/20/2008 5:57:29 AM)

the point of the longers skirt would ruin the character. She is the alter ego of a woman who is entirely wholesome but every now and then day dreams about doing something daring.

Rose is rose is on Comics.com

I have been looking around, and have discoverd that I have a very, very boring avatar, although it matches my name.

I may shop around for something more profound or exciting when time permits.

JimboFletch -> RE: Avatars, free expression, or offensive to some. (3/20/2008 8:18:53 AM)

A year or two ago someone used Captain Kangaroo as an avatar and some people felt it was creepy.

How could he be creepy? I mean, Capt. Kangaroo was the Mr. Rogers of my day.
[8|]

BTW, is there a Capt. Kangaroo or Mr. Rogers for the kids of today?

Sadly no, They have been replaced by Hannah Montanta, Sponge Bob, and the Mr. Men

Mr. Men? Never heard of him/them. I think the Wiggles should go in there somewhere...although I'd rank them right up there with Barney. [8|]

It's cause of the bowl-cut and bushy 'burns! [&:]

Seriously, there have been so many negative things happen with people associated with teaching children the past several years that all seem suspect. Capt. Kangaroo and Mr. Rogers are a dying breed. [:(]

Just out of curiosity did y'all know that both of these gentlemen were highly decorated Soldiers in WWII?

Actually, I did know that about Mr. R., but not about the Captain. Interesting.

There's been a false story floating around the Internet about actor Lee Marvin and Bob Keeshan (Captain Kangaroo). Both did serve in the Marines. This is from the Truth or Fiction site:

The message says that Lee Marvin appeared on the Tonight Show in the 70's when host Johnny Carson brought up Marvin's record in the Marines. Carson said people may not have known that Marvin fought in Iwo Jima, one of the best known battles of World War II, and was awarded the Navy Cross. Marvin then tells a story of heroism in battle about the bravest man he ever knew who was also awarded the Navy Cross...Bob Keeshan who later became best known as Captain Kangaroo.

Before his death in January, 2004, we checked with Bob Keeshan, who was living in Vermont, and he said he never served at Iwo Jima, was not presented with the Navy Cross and, in fact, never saw combat.

There is no record of Lee Marvin at Iwo Jima or winning the Navy Cross. According to a biography that we have on file at TruthOrFiction.com, Marvin did see a lot of action in the Pacific participating in the invasions at Kwajalein and Eniwetok and was wounded in Saipan, for which he was awarded the Purple Heart.

JimboFletch -> RE: Avatars, free expression, or offensive to some. (3/20/2008 3:56:34 PM)

Also, according to TruthorFiction.com

Fred Rogers, the founder and host of the popular U.S. children's television program Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood never served in the military.

According to his official biography from Family Communications, the producers of his show, Fred Rogers went directly from college into media...

Yeah i noticed Jimbo's voice and demanor has changed since his last avatar. A bit more down to earth[;)].

Does it shape your view of the person, and how you respond to them in a post. Do you pay attention to them? Do you find some offensive?

I enjoy them and see them as an extension of someones taste. Some maybe provide a small bit of insight into someones personality (along with their tag lines). But then again I know that may be reading alot into it so I don't let that affect how I respond to anyone. I respond to their words, not their picture thingymabobs. I haven' seen any that I would say are downright offensive. There have been one or two I cared not to look at. Simply because they were sort of spooky looking to me and I don't like to see stuff like that. Maybe a couple that seemed a tad inappropriate considering the site we are on. But that's their perogative and I don't take it personally.

I always liked Captain Kangaroo. I did, however, have doubts about Mr Green Jeans. [:D]

Thanks for the posts, Jimbo.
