Well, I'd like to be a fan of the older Christian bands, though old is fairly relative for some people; by old, I mean Barren Cross, Mortification, Tourniquet, Vengeance. The stuff's so dang hard to find though. I've got "Scrolls of the Megilloth," and well, that's about it. I've got "Where Moth and Rust Destroy," but that's 2003, even though it's in the vein of Tourniquet's older works.

I've had some success finding classic Christian metal on Amazon. used from private sellers that Amazon guarentees.

I am a Petra fan. There is also a thread here on 80's/early 90's Christian music as well.

DaveW -> RE: Petra...... (3/23/2008 12:15:00 PM)

I like Petra. Esp. the early stuff when Greg Hough was still with them. Love the dual guitar stuff....

Terath -> RE: Petra...... (3/23/2008 2:29:58 PM)

Good news! Mortification's current label is re-releasing, well, just about everything. Check out Barnes and Noble come April 15th, or get your online preorders now.

sunshine4God -> RE: Petra...... (3/24/2008 12:53:57 AM)

My dad loves Petra.

rockitd -> RE: Petra...... (3/24/2008 2:27:03 PM)

Petra was the first tape (dating myself) I ever bought - Not of This World. I saw Greg Volz with them on the "Beat the System" tour and totally embraced John Schlitt on "This Means War" and saw him on the "Beyond Belief" and "Unseen Power" tours.

I also love Stryper, Undercover, Altar Boyz, and alot of 80s/90s bands.

themoodyexperience -> RE: Petra...... (3/24/2008 3:42:47 PM)

I used to have every Petra album ever made. Got rid of a few of them but i still have the main core of their catalog. I prefer the Greg X. years, but I highly enjoy the later video albums with all the behind the scenes material.

rockitd -> RE: Petra...... (3/24/2008 5:37:56 PM)

I have More Power To Ya to Petra Praise 2:We Need Jesus. I had the two that followed, but I wasn't crazy about them.

themoodyexperience -> RE: Petra...... (3/24/2008 7:44:18 PM)

One of my prized possessions is 'Never Say Die' on vinyl.

stellaluna -> RE: Petra...... (3/24/2008 8:45:41 PM)

I have Judas Kiss on one of my YouTube playlists. I think I still have a cassette of Beat the System floating around somewhere, too.

Still listen to Petra. In fact, I just picked up a copy of Greg X Volz's "The River Is Rising" at a pawn shop the other day. I know...it's not technically Petra, but if you've heard it, it's basically "Beat The System part 2". I've worn out multiple copies of cassettes and CDs of all the Volz-era Petra albums.

humbleinspirit -> RE: Petra...... (4/1/2008 7:36:32 PM)

More like Beat The System "lite".[sm=sidesmile.gif]

rockitd -> RE: Petra...... (4/2/2008 2:16:05 PM)

I have that one on cassette. I didn't care for his follow up. It lacked the power of Bob Hartman's writing skills.

Casper22 -> RE: Petra...... (4/3/2008 7:49:45 AM)

Petra, Rez and Jerusalem where some of the 1st Christian Rock groups I was introduced to. I still have beat the system and more power to ya on cd. Greg Voltz was the better singer for me tho I couldnt stand when John S took over. Then they came out with that praise and worship cd and thats when John S won me over a bit. Greg Voltz is still the better singer for me tho. I miss the days of Deliverance and Mortification. Love there style of music as well. Has anyone here ever heard of Ransom, Barnabus, Malachia and Cloud 2 Ground what ever happened to these groups does anyone know. What about Sandi Patti and Carmen they just disapeared off the face of the earth. I would get so agravated at TBN back in the day because they would overload everyone on Carmen or Amy Grant on the weekends when all I wanted to see was Stryper lol Christian Lite is safer on the ratings I guess. Lord to be 17 and naive again.

freakofnature -> RE: Petra...... (4/3/2008 4:29:48 PM)

I started out with Petra, I don't even really know what happened to my old Petra stuff. I've seen them in concert, back in the day, I'd have to say 6 or 8 times, all with John S. on vocals, got to meet them one time also, that rocked when I was 15. I don't know that I could listen to them much now, I give them their props for what they accomplished in bringing rock to a young Christian generation like mine and am greatful they were there when I was 12-17, but not sure I could enjoy it now. I may have to go out and grab a couple of Petra CD's.. just for old time sakes.
