I don't think staged antics hinder things as long as they're not over the top and only used in the right moments. An example of good use that comes to mind is when I saw BF&A. They were singing "Looking for a City" and Brian was acting like he didn't want to go higher in the song yet the piano player kept it up untill Brian sang "thats all I'm doing". And to be honest I haven't seen a bad example from anyone I've seen.

I like planned antics and think that they add to a show. There is a reason "old" jokes are old - they're funny.
Christians are the happiest people I know and most like to have fun.

Someone mentioned Derrell Stewart of the Florida Boys wearing red socks in an earlier post. Another staged thing he did, which was always funny, was to make faces as if to imitate Gene McDonald, of course behind Gene's back, while Gene was singing.

This one's an old one...but THE CHAINSAW! who could forget it. Randy Perry would say "Now this chainsaw's a McCullogh and I bet if you've ever had a McCullough you've had to choke it a few times." Then he'd tell Tracy "Now I want you to fill that chainsaw up with gas, choke it a few times and crank it up." Of course Tracy would make the gas sound and then "Now put in that last drop!" I love it. Or he would call Libbi a smurfette. That never gets old. Neither does the look on her face. Oh and the Soutmen. Jim Heffner calls Tim Riley Cledus and always tells some story about how dumb he is and Tim always does the Cledus voice and talks out of the side of his mouth and kinda holds his mouth crooked. I never get tired of it!!!

The Kingsmen used to have a routine where Ray would spit out his chewing gum in the middle of a song...bringing the song to a halt as everyone on stage cracked up. They fooled me. I thought it was completely spontaneous the one time I saw them do it.

Speaking of staged antics, the Oak Ridge Boys used to do "Go Out to the Program" where they would imitate other popular groups (e.g. Happy Goodmans, Statesmen, Chuck Wagon Gang, etc.). The first time I saw it at the NQC in Nashville, I fell out of my chair. Does anyone do anything like that now?

I remember when the Kingsboys did that in the '80s. They used to imitate the Inspirations, Hinsons and Kingsmen.

I remember when the Kingsboys did that in the '80s. They used to imitate the Inspirations, Hinsons and Kingsmen.
Several years ago when Harold Gilley was the bass singer for PSQ, I saw him do very good George Younce and J.D. Sumner vocal impersonations. It was made even more funny by the fact that the Cathedrals were also on the same concert that evening.

This is not exactly SG, but Gospel Bluegrass... Little Roy in the Lewis Family always picks on his sisters during "Good Time Get Together." He always does the suspender trick on "Honey in the Rock" and he always changes hats during "Dueling Banjos."

Ok, while we are talking about 'staged things', one of the funniest things I've ever seen was Gerald Wolfe doing Jerry Goff and then Peg McKamey! Close your eyes and you would think they were standing there.
Unfortunately with the Oaks and theirs as well as this while the artists they were imitating thought it was fun, some of their fans were not always amused.

Now, I have seen Gerald do this on several occasions. Not so much lately. He was very good with his impersonations.

When the Oaks did their imitations I remember that the piano player who I can't remember right now would get somebody's coat and put it under his shirt to act like Howard and Willie would say that he didn't want to have to do Vestal again. I also remember that Noel Fox the bass could really imitate the "Big Chief" from the Statesmen all the way down to shaking his leg. I'm surprised that fans took offense to it.

Tony 'Tarzan' Brown was the pianist. Most fans loved it but a few thought they were being disrespectful to Vestal or one of the others. It seems to be when women are imitated more folks don't like it than with the men. Go figure!

There used to be a kid who traveled as The Hoppers sound man who could imitate Peg perfectly... He'd take off his jacket, and wrap it around him, so he'd have a 'skirt'. He'd jump up and down, and make that jacket shimmy. He'd twirl his hanky around in the air, and he'd sing "Under His Feet".... Sounded just LIKE ole Peggy! (BTW- His Dad wrote that song...) I saw him in Warner Robins, GA one night, and he brought the house down. He didn't realize Peg was standing on stage behind him. She LOVED it, too!!
People just need to get A LIFE! They just look for things to get upset over, I guess-- These artists are just having fun-- not MAKING fun -- and most often, the one's being imitated get a bigger kick out of it than anyone else!
I know I've seen a bunch of kids in North Carolina imitate me, and Jacky Fortner, Gerald Sweatman and the rest of the guys (Liberty) one time. They had on red jackets just like ours--, The tenor "Whoo-Hoo'd" (shouting) like Jacky; the baritone 'preached' like Gerald; and, the piano player kicked his bench back, and threw his hanky in the air-- just like I used to! We LOVED it!!! They were staunch supporters of ours, and we realized their love for us, by the amount of time they put into mimicking us. It's true... Imitation IS the strongest form of flattery...
