You know, I don't have a problem with imitations when it's about style, presentation, or voice, but I think there is a fine line between that and imitating emotions. In that case, I see it as an imitation of the Holy Spirit, which is not okay.
I wonder how you would expect an offended artist to act on stage in front of a crowd. Maybe some are not so thrilled with it but can't make a scene, or are too polite to say so.

That could be a valid point however, I've seen many of these artists when they were not in front of the crowd, they were back stage when they were being imitated. I've seen some of those same artists express their displeasure for other things that went on when they were back stage so this would have probably have been no different if they were upset. I know of one artist that had a 'fan' request another artist to do their imitation so he must not have been too offended.
Imitation is a fine line and one that can be over done, however most of these artists appear together often, they are friends and they all do things to 'kid' each other. The fans are the ones that get bend out of shape usually, not the artists.

BTW, Imitating someone should be done tastefully, or else it might be percieved hurtfully.

This thread started me thinking of some of the "antics" that groups used to do so it's not just with the newer groups. I remember JD Sumner used to act as though he was clearing his nose or throat and "wiping" it on Ed Hill. I remember the Statesmen using two mikes and when Jake Hess was moving from one mike to the other he would push the mike stand over and Rosie Rozell would grab it before it hit the ground. Although not an "antic," I remember James Blackwood going out into the crowd at the War Memorial Coliseum in Nashville, standing on a chair, throwing the mike over his shoulder and filling the whole auditorium as he sang "...though I walk through the valley with a heavy burden, I can fill the touch of his hand."
Wow this subject has brought back some cherished memories. I guess the "old" groups were not so straight laced after all.

We have a few things that we do, but it's by far NOT over the top.
We do this encore of a really jazzy song to start out our a capella section and our bass always surprises us with a weird sound. I usually about pass out laughing because it usually sounds like a duck or some pathetic attempt at a trumpet or something.
We used to do one little thing on our a capella "Great Gettin' Up Mornin"" with our old lead vocalist. Bass would look like he was kicking him to when we did the last key change in sky sharp. But we only did that if the congregation seemed to be comfortable with something like that.
Anything else we do is spontaneous (which happens alot since none of us have a full brain).
Otherwise, we're just really about the music and try not to do a lot of pomp and circumstance with it. I think that sometimes that can bite you in the foot if you're not careful.

The Steeles did "Go Out To The Program" at NQC in 2001. Yes, they actually did this ON September 11, 2001. Here's an excerpt from a report I wrote up and posted to alt.music.gospel.southern:
"The Steeles pretty much "ruled" the evening in terms of memorable stuff,
though. In addition to what I've already mentioned, they resurrected the "Go
Out To The Program" imitations, done originally by the Oak Ridge Boys and
later by the Kings' Boys. Their 7 year old kid did imitations of Michael
Combs, Tony Gore, and McCray Dove that brought down the house. I was LOL
when he did the Gore walk around the room while shaking hands with folks and
singing "I'll Put On A Crown." The Dove Brothers joined them (with McCray
running the kid off stage) at the end for "Get Away, Jordan," but I thought
the Gore routine was funnier."

I'd love to see someone revive 'go out to the program' again! You know that EH & SS would be a good (obvious) choice to imitate and wouldn't you like for someone to try to imitate Michael Booth?

I remember seeing the Easters doing an impersonation of the Kingsmen. Jeff did Squeaky to a T. It was awesome.
I always enjoyed seeing Kings/Gold when Chris and Jay were the tenors. Jay would come out on stage late carrying an equipment case of some kind for Chris to stand on so they would be closer to the same height. Funny stuff.
Harold Gilley, as mentioned earlier, did a great George and J.D.

Okay, let me first start out by saying that I have been seeing The Mckameys for over 20 years and there have many many times that I've see The Mckameys that Peg did not kick her shoes off. I just saw them a few weeks ago and guess what??? her shoes didn't come off. If your going to say things about someone, you might want to make sure you know what your talking about first and get your facts straight. Also I don't think it's such a good idea to say things like that any way because, there is nothing fake about Peg. Everytime those shoes do come off I feel the holy ghost all over me and if it was fake or just a show, i don't think that I would feel that. You know that she is really feeling the Lord when those shoes come off!! If you are saying that is fake or just a show then you are saying that the spirit of Lord isn't moving in her and that is definetly not true. The Mckameys are such a blessing to me and to sooo many other people. I just don't see how anyone could make fun of them.

Hi Leah and welcome. Its not that we are making fun of what groups do. Some may see it at staged antics because it happens a lot. Who are we to say that it isn't the spirit. However there are some funny things that groups do that are there purposefully to make you laugh.
