ok lets get it going, what are things that are perceived as being staged antics that groups or individuals do, here are my top few: 1. peg mckamey kicking her shoes off within first 20 min of concert 2. bill gaither saying "why not" after an emotional moment. (why not what?) 3. i have only seen this one once and i truly like the dove brothers but when they run around the stage on didn't rain. saw them at nqc on main stage do this and though mckray was going to foam at the mouth chasing ben speer around the stage. 4. choreographed dance steps like the do-wop groups (ex. sig sound) ok so before you get mad and ready to hang me, this is meant to be somewhat serious with a comical undertone. although would be funny to see peg's shoe get caught in tim riley's hair piece

I guess you'd consider this "antics".... At every single concert, Gerald Wolfe will tell some outrageous story about Rodney and Rodney will come forward with that "dumb look." It always makes me laugh....even if I've heard the story a LOT of times before!!!

It's one thing to be serious with a comical undertone, but you might want to make sure the facts are accurate. #1 is not, unless you want to remove the "within first 20 min of concert"...

I want to say that I don't have a problem with staged antics, as long as it follows the program and is not too over the top. So here goes. The Hoppers 'walk' on "Shoutin' Time" Dove Brothers moves on both "Didn't It Rain" and "Get Away Jordan" *Tracey patting Libbi (Perrys) on the top of the head When I think of more I will post them.

And you have to mention the "protest" from all the guys when they have to sing that bluegrass song Clayton just "begs" to sing! Crossway- Matt giving Paul a hard time...no matter what. Hahaha. But especially the "Tippah County 2 step champion" routine they do before they sing "Hallelujah Side". I cackle like crazy every time even though I've seen it close to 30 times.

The first time I saw them do this one Matt picked on Scott and I just couldn't believe little "quiet" Scott would be a two stepper. lol After that it went to Paul and has stayed there! I can't tell you how many times I've heard people come up to the table afterwards and ask why he didn't really dance, they were excited to see it. Either that or inform Matt "you know, you have to have 2 people to twostep." [:)]

I knew this would be a "shot" at the McKameys before I ever went to this thread. I have seen them a few times, and the only time I have seen her shoes come off is on "Roll That Burden on Me". We enjoy them. If you do not like them, then do not go see them. As for as the actual subject of staged antics, that is an interesting topic for a thread. One is Tracy Stuffle always bumping or offerring the mic to the piano player. It is predictable but funny. Another is Rodney saying "wow" about a product special Gerald is describing. One of the silliest ones I ever saw was several years ago, the Anchormen said they were going to sing a song backwards, and then they turned around with their backs to the audience and sang the song.

I remember a few more. A couple times Jonathan Wilburn did the moon walk while singing "He Said" During the early '90s there was a group out by the name of the Fox Brothers. I remember the lead singer would spin his guitar around while it was strapped to him. When Jim used the throw the Kingsmen members from the stage on their 'big crowd pleasing final number'. Also when Jim Hamill used to take his jacket off and throw it off the stage.

At one time (over 2 years ago) I saw the Mckameys several weeks in a row - Peg's shoes came off on almost the same note every time. Now I'm not going to say the Lord didn't bless her. But a friend with me said 'her feet must hurt a lot, she is always kicking off her shoes'. This person was new to SGM and until those weekends never heard the McKameys. That being said they probably have the most dedicated, loyal fans of anyone in the business. They will turn out for a love offering or a ticket, they will come out in snow, rain or sun shine. The do-wap moves - a little goes a long way with me. 1 song or a few small moves in a couple of songs is about my limit. The movements that distract me from what is being sung bother me, not saying they are wrong just that 'it don't work for me'. I admit to being easily distracted, if that were not the case it probably would not bother me as bad.

I have seen the McKameys once, and Peg's shoes did come off. As far as the moves, you said it very well. I can't state it any better than you did.

Peg McKamey's been doing the shoe thing since "God on the Mountain" was a hit, which was the last time I saw them. "Mom" Spencer (forget her name) used to cry at the same spot in the same song (I don't remember what one either), during every show during the same timeframe. Mike Holcomb has walked the stage the same way during "Is that Footsteps" for 20+ years, and hits the same really low notes during "He Made a Way" as he did in the 80's. Nothing wrong with a trademark move or saying. Sort of like Urkel with "did I do that?"

McKameys fans expect Peg to kick her shoes off. There were a few concerts recently, that I saw the McKameys, where Peg did not kick her shoes off. I began to wonder if she had moved away from that, but then I saw them in January of this year and the shoes came off again. For someone who may be seeing a certain group for the first time the staged antics may be a distraction. But, for me who has seen many groups, many times you come to expect certain stage 'moves' will happen at some point in the program.

I also think Dee Ann hit the nail on the head. Any type of stage presence should NEVER take away from the message of the song. Sometimes, I've gotten taken aback simply by watching one of the group members singing every word on a verse that he/she wasn't singing. You tend to begin watching that non-vocal person, rather than actually listening to the words and allowing them to sink into your heart. BTW, "The Fox Brothers" are still singing ... however, they're in the Country Gospel arena. That was really their style all along; but, it just hadn't taken hold until lately. Staged antics annoy me. It's almost as if the artists think the audience is too stupid to figure it out. It's cheesy. Not to mention the corny jokes that are told over and over. I think the classic one that groups use the most that I really loathe is when the group leader is introducing the group individually and he comes to a particular member, starts saying nice thngs, said member begins to smile broadly and then group leader says something really to cut down the member he is introducing and THEN the member starts with the fake look of disbelief while shaking his head. JUST SING!!!

I'm sure we all remember Darell Stewart that traveled with the Florida Boys for many years. I never did see him without his red socks. He wore them even when they were wearing Orange suits. He even gave many pairs of red socks to other piano playing artist.

look at it from an artist point of view... "If it ain't broke... don't fix it..." if people still laugh or like it or respond to something... you can rest assured you'll see it for awhile... and in my opinion they should take the liberty of that and add a dose of originality for instance just as Peg kicks off the shoes... if Bill took out his teeth and threw off his wig everytime something gets a good response... we'd probably like it? haha... maybe not... but then again "WHY NOT" ha
