doinkdom -> RE: Dr Who is coming back (4/22/2008 10:52:14 AM)

My husband has followed this show since like 1980 something and he has had his favorites, but he loves this series.

I'm only familiar with the most recent Doctor and the one before him. Rose and Martha have been the only companions I've seen.

Rose was good...I was just always wanting to fix those spider eyelashes. I did like that she had such a big heart and all.

Martha was just ok.

Yes, companions came and went on the classic show. Sarah Jane was one of the longer-running companions. After her came Romana, who was a Time Lady and portrayed by two different actresses.

Among The Doctor's first companions was his granddaughter Susan. Two of her teachers (one male, one female) were his other companions at the time.

I believe Sarah Jane was a companion for 4 seasons, but she went through 2 different Doctors. It's been difficult to really get into the show, when I'm constantly having to adjust to new people. I really liked Doctor Nine, and I got used to Doctor Ten, but a new companion all the time? [:'(]

Over 26 seasons of the original series, there were 27 companions (30 if you include the 3 members of UNIT who were regulars during the 3rd Doctor era). The shortest was Sarah Kingdom, who was only in one (extremely long - 12 episodes) story. Sarah Jane was on for 80 (I think) episodes, making her the longest running by 3 or 4 episodes.

If you take Sarah Jane (who was on the show for 3 1/3 seasons) out of the mix, the average length of time for any one companion is about 2 seasons, so both Rose and Martha would seem to fit the pattern. Some companions have more total episodes than others because the seasons changed in length over the years. For example the first Doctor's companions, Ian and Barbara, had nearly as many episodes as Sarah Jane even though they were only on the show for just under 2 seasons, because the seasons back then were 40 episodes +/- long.

LOL I already knew most of it... just had to double check the specific numbers. I was a MAJOR fan of the original series when I was in high school and college, and remember most of what I learned back then. Still a fan of both the original and the new series, just not quite as hardcore as I used to be. [:D]

[:'(] I'd be insulted if it weren't true! I always tell people I'm the world's greatest repository of totally useless information. On the plus side, it makes me everyone's first choice as partner when playing Trivial Pursuit! [;)]

doinkdom -> RE: Dr Who is coming back (4/22/2008 2:18:11 PM)

not quite as hardcore????[&:]

I'd hate to see your version of hardcore then [:D][;)]

Of course, I have my own personal favorites and such that I probably know way too much info about so who am I to point fingers.[8D]

[:D] Take a look at my posts on pages 2 & 3 of this thread, and you'll get an idea of just how "hardcore" I was back then. Nowadays my fandom is pretty much confined to watching the show and buying the occasional novel or audio production. Back in the `80's and `90's I was a VERY actively involved in organized fan activities... until trivial things like college started taking up too much time. [:'(]

In my own defense, my store of useless information does extend beyond Doctor Who. I have a good memory, love history and general trivia, and have had ongoing interests in a lot of stuff that other people find less than fascinating (the History Channel and Discovery are my favorite TV channels, if that tells you anything).

[sm=tongue.gif]Actually, I got out more when I was working with the fanclub. College did an effective job of killing what social life I had, and it's never fully recovered!

Charis2u -> RE: Dr Who is coming back (4/22/2008 7:31:29 PM)

WHat this world needs now is......a doctor.

Rabstark, your knowledge of Who is great, now question. Are you in the group that counts only 1987-1989 as the McCoy era and only 1996 as the McGann, or do you count the years inbetween. I've seen this from some people as McCoy 1987-1996 and McGann 1996-2005.
FYI for those who know of Peter Davidson (Fifth Doctor) his daughter will be in episode 5 this season

I count the years in between. In Sylvester's case, because there was obviously a large time gap between Survival and the movie, based on the seventh Doctor's appearance and the changes in the TARDIS interior. In McGann's case, it's because the audio productions are generally considered at least partly canonical, even by Davies.

Georgia Moffett (Davison's daughter) is not only going to be in episode 6 (not 5, btw)... The Doctor's Daughter, she apparently IS the Doctor's daughter (after a sort). <- spoiler

Strange that, most people go to college and find a social life... you really must be an anorak[;)]

It didn't help that I didn't start college until I was 23, and lived off campus in the next town over.

Not really... at 23, I didn't really have that much interest in dorm life. Living with a bunch of teenagers didn't appeal. I kinda liked my privacy.

agapetos -> RE: Dr Who is coming back (4/24/2008 8:28:51 PM)

Manda, this is the free Dr Who DVD I was talking about in the Brit thread...

I only vaguely remember the Sontarans ~ there's an article in the RT about them though (they're only 5' high! I remember Mike from the Young Ones though...

stateofgrace -> RE: Dr Who is coming back (4/25/2008 4:13:36 PM)

Doctor Who night tonight in the US. I'm looking forward to it!

doinkdom -> RE: Dr Who is coming back (4/25/2008 4:14:33 PM)

I know...FINALLY!

Sideways -> RE: Dr Who is coming back (4/26/2008 12:48:57 AM)

So, this new companion seems interesting, if only a little pathetic that she actually had all her bags packed and in the car just in case she ran into the doctor. I didn't watch the episode in between Martha and Rose, but I'm assuming she was that one episode companion?

Worth a second look, but I'm not feeling the love completely just yet.

I loved Sarah Jane, though. I don't care if it is geared towards people a bit younger then myself.

Yes, she was in the Christmas Special for 2006 (which y'all will have seen later than that!)
as per H E R E

I found that first episode OK - enjoyed the second one more (you'll get that next week!)

agapetos -> RE: Dr Who is coming back (4/26/2008 6:06:55 PM)

Oh that was so weird... as soon as I saw them tonight, I remembered the Sontarans! I started to listen to the cd that came with the RT yesterday, but was so tired I gave up on it... and I've decided that I'm gonna get the subscription to RT (yes for the dvd) but I buy the RT anyhow so...[:D]
