Anything would be better than Die Hard 3.

Wow!!! I loved Leslie's music...especially Dancing With Danger and Black In White In A Grey World. The Turning had some good songs (like "Libre Me") but it seemed she was going secular. I think that's awesome and welcome her with open arms!!!![8D][;)]

Glad to hear it. Loved the Turning and Black and White, not too crazy about her earlier stuff....too "young" sounding for me. Didn't she re-release Turning as Sam Phillips after going secular (which I don't really blame her for)?

[:)] YEAH!!!! I love Leslie (Sam) Phillips. I am in the Chicago area I hope she comes here soon. I was heart broken when she decided to leave the Christian Music. I love her Black and White in a Grey World CD. She is one of my all time favorites. Glad to know she is back on the scene.

Yes, there is a version of The Turning on the DCC Compact Classics label with different cover art and (at least to my ears) somewhat better sound than the original Myrrh LA edition. One of the best Christian albums ever, for my money.

It's interesting that she's playing a Christian festival. I wonder what songs from her catalog she'll choose to perform - think she'll do some of her cues from The Gilmore Girls? I always wanted to see her live - should be really cool.

2shaye -> RE: Leslie Sam Phillips to play Major Christian Music Festival! (3/27/2008 11:26:00 PM)

I'm glad she's back. One of my all time favorite songs is "Strength of my life".

SD456 -> RE: Leslie Sam Phillips to play Major Christian Music Festival! (3/28/2008 12:27:31 AM)

I loved her music in the early 80's when she was around. I had all of her albums and played them over and over. I still use "it's your kindness that leads us to repentence" during my private worship times.

I wonder what she looks like now. She must be about 45 years old? And I wonder how her voice sounds.

So good to hear she'll being doing a concert. She was pretty beaten up by the church and burned-out when she quit.

duderox4lisa -> RE: Leslie Sam Phillips to play Major Christian Music Festival! (3/28/2008 1:06:17 AM)

I really thought she had a good thing going after she left the Christian music scene and performed as Sam Phillips. Good songs that left her early stuff in the dust. I have her "Dancing With Danger" album around, and while it had its moments, it certainly did not touch on her real strengths and potential with 'The Turning' album. It would be interesting to see what she's doing now. I thought she'd never want to do anything with Christian music because she had a major blowout about 20 years ago with the industry. Not that I blame her.

redeemedsaint -> RE: Leslie Sam Phillips to play Major Christian Music Festival! (3/28/2008 8:39:01 AM)

I met Leslie back in 1984 and she was a very nice person. Loved her music. I have listened to some of her secular stuff and her best CD was Martinis and Bikinis. Her much later stuff after that was kind of not so good. Hopefully this time, things will turn around for her and the Christian community will be much more accepting.

nealmorsefan -> RE: Leslie Sam Phillips to play Major Christian Music Festival! (3/28/2008 9:59:03 AM)

Samlie Phillips used CCM to vault her career in secular music. It annoys me to no end when artists do this. I, for one, would not drop a single penny on a concert or a piece of swag by an artist like this. Sure, her music was awesome in the 80s (I played my copy of "The Turning" to death), but some wounds don't heal.

I disagree with this. If Phillips wanted a "successful" career, she should've stayed in CCM. While she was a CCM artist, she was rather well-known and respected. Her secular career, on the other hand, was more satisfying artistically, but commercial suicide. I thought her "Indescribable Wow" was a very clever record. I downloaded "Dancing With Danger" a few months ago and was actually embarrassed by how bad that record had aged.

Phillips still has one of the best comments about CCM ever (and I paraphrase): "The Christian music business has a whole lot of business with very little Christianity in it."

I saw her open up for Bruce Cockburn in March 1992 and she seemed as if a weight had been lifted off of her shoulders.

nealmorsefan: Using your logic, wouldn't it seem that Neal Morse used his secular success in Spocks Beard to vault his career in CCM?

Neal actually became a Christian and then pretty much left the secular music world so the logic you're trying to use does not work in this case.

No, I don't think my logic is faulty at all. Morse already has a dedicated Spocks Beard fan base that will buy anything he puts out. Spocks Beard has never had anything objectionable in their lyrics - in fact, most of their lyrics are overwhelmingly positive - so even their non-religious fans would probably buy a Neal Morse record. Phillips, on the other hand, was pretty much black-listed when she announced she was leaving CCM. Morse enjoys success in both the secular and Christian industries, while Phillips enjoys very modest success in the secular industry.

I'm just simply saying it is generally easier for someone to leave the secular industry and put out a CCM record than it is for a CCM artist to release a secular record.

For the record, I do enjoy both Spocks Beard and Neil Morse...

humbleinspirit -> RE: Leslie Sam Phillips to play Major Christian Music Festival! (3/29/2008 5:10:55 AM)

I find this interesting that she will be performing at Soul Fest in particular. I saw her in concert back in 1985 opening for Randy Stonehill. I went out and bought/ordered her album. I ended up getting all of her Myrrh releases as well. I did purchase her debut on Virgin also. Then purchaced the follow-up, which I didn't like, and sold it. I haven't bought any of her music since.

nealmorsefan -> RE: Leslie Sam Phillips to play Major Christian Music Festival! (3/31/2008 10:09:59 AM)

Neal never vaulted a career in Christian music. He didn't need to. What you're implying is that he has written his last couple of records with Christian themes simply to make money in the CCM marketplace. How dare you imply that? Neal is just writing what is on his heart and people are listening. I rank his "Testimony" album among the top 5 pop music albums ever released in any genre.

Lesam Phillips, on the other hand, went to secular music to throw off the chains of repression she felt in CCM. Huh? Because CCM doesn't promote songs about drinking, drugs, promiscuity, and general depravity? Why would someone want to sing about that junk? Oh, yes...we must be HONEST with ourselves and true to ARTISTIC side. CCM has allowed plenty of artistic freedom over the years from artists such as Larry Norman, Steve Taylor, Petra, DeGarmo & Key, and even Leslie Phillips. The argument of leaving CCM to be free as an artist is a bunch of carp. Besides, the secular realm limits what you can say also.

Oh, and Samlie Phillips has made a TON more money in secular music than she ever did in CCM. Primarily, that is due to the infancy of CCM at the time she was with it. Were she a Christian artist now, she would probably never leave CCM, but who knows? Do you realize she wrote the theme song to the TV series hit "Gilmore Girls"? She could retire on that song alone! "Commercial suicide"...pushah!

Bunch of carp? When did fish enter this conversation...

Could you show me Ms. Phillip's financial records to show she has had more success in the secular vs. CCM realm? Sam was a big fish in a small CCM pond. Sorry, but Ms. Phillips never renounced her Christianity and I have never heard a song by her that promoted drug/alcohol usage and/or promiscuity.

As for Steve Taylor, how did you feel about his Chagall Guevara days? Seems to me he was a wee bit tired of CCM himself. Did you go ballistic when he rejoined CCM and released "Squint"? As for Petra or D&K, don't even get me started - those bands were both subpar at best.

What would happen if Neal Morse decided to rejoin his Spocks Beard bandmates for a reunion tour or record? Would you be crying "Judas" then? And you must get out more often if you think Morse's "Testimony" is one of the top five releases of all time.

You must be confused about Gilmore Girls. The opening theme song was "where you'll lead I'll follow" by Carole King, not Leslie Phillips.

There were many reasons she left CCM and it wasn't just because she didn't have freedom. The religious spirit in the christian community at large was constantly bashing everything she did. If she danced too much on stage, she'd get tons of angry letters about it; if she wrote a song that spoke about her feelings more than about Christ, she got stupid angry letters from christians not liking it. She was bashed non-stop by supposed christians and it finally broke her.

Not unlike what happens on some of these threads by supposed Christians.

You are correct about the opening theme song, my bad. However, the credits at the end clearly state: "Music by Sam Phillips". She clearly has made a few pennies off this uber-popular TV Series.

eden512 -> RE: Leslie Sam Phillips to play Major Christian Music Festival! (3/31/2008 7:31:12 PM)

I agree sd 454.

Basically from what i've heard from people that knew Leslie Sam around this time, is that when she matured in her performance style and changed how she did things in her performances. Concerts where cancelled one after another and nasty letters written. She felt that her Christian audience wasn't open to talking about other things other than the "formulated" jargoned songs we all were used to at that time. I know some other entries are blasting her on the "artistic" basis for leaving. But It really boiled down to she wasn't welcomed unless she conformed and Sam is not one to conform, but follow her convictions. Anybody listen to "I want to be a clone" by Steve Taylor? just wondering?

She spent a great deal of time trying to ignore or not talk about her time in CCM when she left. Even changing her name. She basically started from scratch with a new career and name. Nobody knew who she was and so I can't really see the "using" the ccm career to catapult a mainstream music career. It does't add up. Very few fans actually followed her and kept up with her career. T-Bone Burnett was key in her getting her Virgin Records contract. If she stayed in CCM she would have not been welcome in singing about corporate greed, political corruptness, and environmental issues penned in her first 3 Virgin releases. I noticed in doing a Sam Phillips Soulfest search that her current fans are freaking out that she is playing a Christian Festival. No matter what she does people are going to sling arrows. I choose to care more about treating a person with human respect and supporting a sister no matter what audience she plays for.

I originally submitted this to see what reaction the "Christ Community Music" forum would have. The interesting thing is her situation is simular (not exactly) to the song she wrote that Robert Plant and Alison Krauss recorded , "Sister Rosetta goes before". Wiki Rosetta Tharpe and read about how she was a pioneering Gospel singer, songwriter and recording artist who attained great popularity in the 1930s and 1940s with a unique mixture of spiritual lyrics and early rock accompaniment. She became the first great recording star of Gospel music, first surfacing on the pop charts in 1939 with her recording "This Train." Talk about using your ccm career to catapult her career. [;)]

It is an intersting story.

She has had an active music career in secular music for almost 20 years. You don't call that success? In a realm of true artistic merit and dog-eat-dog economics with no social agenda whatsoever, she seems to have done ok. And did you catch the titles of some of those albums? "MARTINIS & Bikinis"? "Fan Dance"? Hmm...

quote:

I never cared for Chagall Guevara personally and didn't really become aware of Steve Taylor until his "Squint" days anyhow. Notwithstanding, the point was that Steve Taylor enjoyed a broad freedom to write what he wanted while in CCM. I also seem to recall him saying something about the politics of secular music being far worse than CCM...something about he refused to soften his stance on abortion and lost his record deal over it or something. Did Sam or Leslie shun secular music when faced with a similar moral crossroads? Pure conjecture of course, but a completely logical conclusion nonetheless.

BLAH! What are you doing posting on the music forum??? Certain statements are slightly less than blasphemy!

It would be awesome if he rejoined Spock's Beard and was able to be a light in the darkness. Not that he isn't already. And, hey, I think he has continued to play with them from time to time anyhow. Now, I would be quite upset if he was reported to be cursing, making obscene gestures, drinking and generally misbehaving in the public eye. I would probably stop buying his stuff. I am of the opinion that an artist should express in their art that which is most important to them. A Christian's faith should be the most important thing to them. Therefore, if someone is singing about questionable or downright objectionable topics, one is left to conclude that their faith is not important to them. Could be just me...but I doubt it.

Not a progressive rock fan I see. Or is it that you abhor music that is authentic and written to the glory of God? What's in your top 5 albums? And what does that say about you?

gaylel1 -> RE: Leslie Sam Phillips to play Major Christian Music Festival! (3/31/2008 9:26:28 PM)

Constant judging of CCM artists drive people away from the industry. Phillps was one of the cutting edge artists that was misunderstood by the Christian community because they tend to judge someone just because they are different. The same thing happened to Andrae Crouch, Edwin Hawkins, Kirk Franklin, DC Talk and many others because they did not fit the "tradtional CCM sound" and that they were made examples of because they were under condemnation. Oh yes, they were also judged to hell as well.

I remember a dance routine a long time ago when Vickie Winans was on the Stellar Awards a few years ago. She was tarred and feathered by the Christian Gospel music community because these were traditional people and they figured that you cannot use dance in gospel music. Since then, the gospel community lightened up on Winans and accepted her sound and yes, she still have dancing in her videos.

Phillips will discover a different CCM climate because there are cutting edge artists who are now accepted by both Christian and secular arenas. And its about time she returned to her roots because she will find that's a different audience and yes, she will be more accepted by her old fans and will make some new ones.

Okay, if you want to split hairs, "Fan Dance" could be a provocative title, but I just consider it a play on words. I have absolutely no problems with "Martinis and Bikinis" - alcohol is not expressly forbidden in the Bible (I even have a beer every now and again). If she had titled the record "I Drank Ten Martinis and Paraded Around the Hotel in Several Different Bikinis", then we might have a problem.

WOW!! This must be new revelation to me - I have to listen to CCM to be a Christian.[8|] I actually liked early Petra (with Greg X. Volz), but the John Schlitt years did nothing for me. DeGarmo and Key also did nothing for me. I still enjoy The Choir, Daniel Amos, Steve Taylor, Bob Bennett, Randy Stonehill, Larry Norman, Resurrection Band, etc.

quote:

Not a progressive rock fan I see. Or is it that you abhor music that is authentic and written to the glory of God? What's in your top 5 albums?

Actually, I like quite a bit of prog rock - pre-Phil Collins Genesis, Kansas, Porcupine Tree, Opeth, and, yes, Spocks Beard find frequent rotation in my CD player.

As for my Top 5 favorite records of all-time:
1) The Clash - London Calling
2) Van Morrison - Moondance
3) Cheap Trick - At Budokan
4) The Waterboys - Fishermans Blues
5) The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band

As for authenitic, three of those records - those of The Clash, The Beatles, and Van Morrison - are in the Top 50 rock records of all-time. Cheap Trick's record is considered one of the greatest live recordings ever. The Waterboys barely make a splash in a large puddle, but that is still a record I love.

Sam did the "music cues" (or fills) for Gillmore Girls -those little 5 to 10 second segments where there was accoustic guitar and humming in between scenes and before commercials. That's why I mentioned them in my first post on this thread. They (the cues) were actually quite good, and it was fairly easy to recognize that it was her if you've spent any time at all listening to her albums. Her voice is pretty unique.
