Does your doctor recommend "Ritalin vacations"? IOW, to not take the meds on weekends, school vacations, or summer vacation? Nick has had some pretty bad weight loss and only started out at 47 pounds (6.5 years old) when he started it. From what I have found online, many people take breaks from the medicine so that they don't have the side effects all the time. We have noticed that when we don't give Nick his meds for whatever reason, he eats like a pig!

Rotten day...three hours at the dentist and left with a bawling kid who says he's never going back. Now why didn't they listen to me and use nitrous like last time????? Now we have to go back in two weeks so they can finish, and you can bet your last dollar that kid is getting happy drugs.

Can I go with him???

I have 5 teeth that need work. Two molars need pulled, a root needs removed and two wisdom teeth, one is impacted. We have new insurance AND bought dental insurance. We knew this was coming. What we did not know was that if I have it all done in one visit, it is medical first (impacted tooth and sedation) then dental (3 extractions and the root removal).

Do you know how hard it is to get the right surgeon on two different policies that is willing to be patient with my sheer terror AND has an opening tomorrow?

I had one tell me that they would get the coverage that I needed. I didn't want the surgery to wait that long. Several say I would need to wait a week or two for appointment just to get the antibiotics. I can't believe that dentists DON'T have time for emergency appointments.

I did find one - I was in tears several times, but when she said tomorrow, I was so overcome I was crying again.

And folks think I am worried about their feeling elsewhere...

Poor Noah and Momma Bee

MBee: Are you having all of that surgery tomorrow or just a consultation??

It's interesting that your major medical will be paying for the wisdom tooth extraction. DS had wisdom tooth extraction and gum removal from molar surgery in December. Our dental paid for the wisdom teeth but denied the gum surgery. Thankfully we were able to cover the cost.

Donna yes we do vacations I never give it to her on the weekends or school vacations because of the weight loss issue. She is 8 and still wears a size 6. My doctor told me to make sure she got the vacations because she doesn't eat on the meds and they worry about her not getting all the vitamins and things she should get. I sometimes even skip Fridays. The school doesnt like that one.

Just the consultation today.

If they can do all the work I will need to miss work. Have I mentioned my boss / job is the greatest? If I am off for more than 3 days, I need to be seen by the company doctor - but I can take off as much as I need to recover. WITH PAY.

Do you see the happy dance?

Medication vacations make sense to me. Assuming (in case someone thinks this website is the sole, best source for medical advice) that you don't need to maintain a set level to retain effectiveness. I'm laughing about bouncing 4-yo needed meds too. I tell folks that I like loud kids, you know they are happy and know where they are.

DeeDee's mouth is getting her in trouble. She will tell the teacher when she feels that a paper is incorrectly marked wrong. She claims the teacher will say that she (DD) is 'always right'. So I told her to smile sweetly and thank her for noticing. DeeDee said that she would lose recess if she said that. I said to call me if that happens.

And, of course, I won't be there today...

(((GARSY))) It sounds like you've had a day. Better ones are coming.

I had to come in and add this...

I had a card waiting for me for Secretary's day. Is it really Secretary's Day? I hate Hallmark Holidays. But, my boss was in my office at 7am to thank me for all my hard work.

Made me glad to be on time. And, I LOVE MY JOB!

And, I am posting this in another thread, oh hosties-with-the-mosties. Because I'm happy.

Thanks, Michelle. That goes along with all the information I've found online. We're being investigated by CPS for this, because Nick's mom reported it. Whatever...I think we'll be cleared, hopefully soon.

MB, it is my understanding that ritalin and other ADD/ADHD meds do not have to be given every day. They just don't work on the days you don't take them. If we miss a dose because we're away from home and forgot the pills, I can tell within an hour. We feel he really only needs them for school and times when we need him to be able to focus without constant reminder, but he was really getting skin and bones and we were worried. We can't take him to the doctor, only for emergency care. Some judge ordered it that way years ago, at his mother's demand, for "continuity of care". It's really a control thing for her, has nothing to do with the care he would or would not receive. What a crock.

Bible study this morning and then we meet with Nick's teacher tomorrow afternoon to discuss summer school vs. retention.

Is he underweight? Forgive me if you just posted that - I'm a bit addled lately. And, I'm just nebby, but it seems to be that if he is, that is proof of your motivation.

I'm no judge, no medical professional and I tend to eschew mes as much as possible but it makes sense to me. Give it to them when they NEED it, not when you'd just like them to have it.

Oh, wait, I do have experience. Kids in scouts skipped them all summer long. Absolute brats 98% of the time, but they seemed to learn more and have more fun. During the school year, they just seemed to drag themselves around.

DeeDee has a classmate that takes mes to 'calm him down' and then he sneaks coffee and DeeDee said he knows that he is acting up from that or if he missed a dose. It is neat that he can see it and appreciate the difference. And, that he confides in my little one.

He started on ritalin last July, I believe, and was 47 pounds then. He went DOWN from there. Yes, weight is a concern with him, though his MOTHER was not concerned. I still don't get why they are investigating it at all. That's okay...the favor was returned. She has the wrong name on his medical records still, and he has a controlled substance drug. The school is probably getting a talking to also, for giving a kid meds without his legal name on them.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hans and Franz were characters in a recurring sketch called "Pumping Up with Hans & Franz" on the television sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live. Hans and Franz themselves were played by Dana Carvey and Kevin Nealon, respectively.

In the sketch, Carvey and Nealon played a pair of muscle-bound Austrian jocks who mimicked/spoofed Arnold Schwarzenegger by using padding for fake muscles, drab gray sweatsuits, weight belts, and Austrian accents. The background of the set included several life-sized cutouts of Schwarzenegger during his competition years, and the sketch's introduction music featured mock Austrian "yodeling".

"Pumping Up" primarily consisted of Hans and Franz denigrating others for not being strong, and then striking bodybuilder poses to show off their "muscled" bodies, complete with strained facial expressions. The two finally received their just deserts when Arnold Schwarzenegger himself made a guest appearance on the sketch (to much applause) and ridiculed "his cousins" for being girlie and weak.

They would start out with "I'm Hans" "And I'm Franz" "And we're here to PUMP (Clap) YOU UP"

In the awfulest accent you can imagine. It was very stupid, but the intro, with Teeny little Dana Carvey, cracked me up every time. They looked like 10 year olds using the pillows off mom's couch for Halloween.

Donna, CPS is for sure investigating? Yuck. I don't get that. I thought it was a pretty common thing to give breaks from Ritalin when the child wasn't in school. This was a long time ago, but when I was a CPS worker I remember a school reporting a child/family for not medicating their child for I believe it was ADHD. I don't remember the details. I don't think we investigated; we didn't see that as a CPS issue. It sounds like you are covered though.

E came home from work upset last night. She'd asked to only be put on the schedule 2 days a week and that didn't happen. I hope she can get something worked out. It's crazy there right now. If a nursing home can't pay/hire CNA's there they had as well shut their doors. Of course I don't know what's really going on; E just hears the workplace rumors.

Okay - I'm better today.

It was just a long exhausting day yesterday and it just seemed like everyone in my family - including my husband and my in-laws were expecting me to do ABSOLUTELY everything and then not get frustrated when they would distract one of my kids from what they were supposed to be doing. Between Brownies/girl scouts, the play, getting home late and two of my kids still having homework AND one child just wanting some attention and a story before she went to sleep. Now if I were the only adult in the house I wouldn't have minded. BUT there were 3 additional adults here and ALL of them were either off doing their own thing OR trying to distract the two doing homework and then getting upset when I get frustrated with them for all of it. THEN Brian has the nerve to ask ME why Ethan hadn't gotten his homework done earlier! I wasn't home after school today and HE was! Why didn't HE sit Ethan down and get it done? I felt the worse for Zoe tho. She was just heartbroken that Ty and Daddy were too "busy" to come and kiss her goodnight and maybe read her a story. I told Brian that but by the time he got up there Zoe was already asleep.

But last night is over. I slept well and FINALLY I get to stay home all day!

We do have an meeting tonight for the gifted program but it's at the same time that Ty is in the play and right down the street from the middle school. I just called the lady in charge and let her know that I had no choice but to bring my younger kids tho. Can't afford a babysitter right now.

Next week Zoe's class is culmanating their unit study on Japan. This week they are learning about Japanese schools and food and next week on Monday they are going to spend the entire day as if they were in a Japanese school! The art teacher is in on this too and is having the kids in those two classes work on a Japanese Art project and the gym teacher is planning to teach them a game kids in Japan play! It's going to be a FUN day!

Well I'm off! I've GOT to get this house picked up a bit. As busy as we have been my house has been neglected big time and the laundry is a mountain!

Blessings,

Garsy

I was wondering how you were today Garsy. It's hard having visitors during the school year; definitely upsets the routine.

Hubby's brother is coming next month the week before school is out. Which BTW is awesome, we've been married almost 22 years and he's never visited us here. When we got married he was in the navy and was out on a big ship somewhere in the ocean. In fact both his brothers were in the navy and missed our wedding. Anyway, work brings him to our state. But I'm thinking about how to best arrange our lives to maximize the visit and minimize the disruption to routine.

Yes, they are investigating, because a complaint was made, so they have to. At least that's the way it works here. I think the issue is that is a controlled substance not ordered to be given with vacations. But...hello...WE can't take him to the doctor and his mother doesn't care he was losing weight he didn't have to lose. Anyway, the spotlight seems to be turning right back to her for not having his legal name on doctor and pharmacy records, and also for not caring that he has lost weight.

I don't think anything will come of it, though it is stressful still.

Garsy...that would make me batty.

We're going to pick up his medical records next week. We haven't gotten them in a few years because we've been getting along fairly well with her and it's always a hassle to get the records (have to show them thirty different pieces of paper that prove Brian has the right to them ). Brian has a day off next week for my ultrasound and an orthopedic appointment for him, so we'll do it that day.

Good news...it has united Brian and I more, when we have had quite a bit of tension over the filing or not filing for custody issue. Also, my house is being CPS cleaned every single night before we go to bed, just in case.

I know that it must be terribly hard(ok I dont know for a fact other then we had a CPS case opened on us one time It was really silly a lady called the cops on me in wal-mart because after spending 45 mins in the toy aisle where each toy that had been selected was exchanged for another when I told her that was the last toy she was picking and if it ended up being thrown at mommy and baby sister as had the previous 6 there would be no toy this visit of course what happened she threw it and I calmly picked it up sit it back on the shelf walked to the checkout to buy my diapers and formula. Of course she was crying toy toy. So they called the cops and held me in the store until they got there and I had to go for parenting classes because of the emotional abuse of her not getting a toy.) Of course your case is totally different but it is still so hard and stressful. But and isnt there always a but Brain and you are closer and the house is cleaner which helps relieve some of the stress. Boy somedays I sure can ramble

Garsy I am glad your day is better and that would have drove me bonkers to.

Penpen Welcome
I have 4 kids ages 10,9,7,and 6. That are in school but we are in the process of bringing them home to homeschool.

Have a great day everyone

Michelle, that's rotten! I would have thrown a big old fit if made to take parenting classes for parenting my child and teaching them not to be a brat. But yes, you're right about the 'buts'. I am enjoying the house being clean-clean each day...just not the reason I feel it has to be, if that makes sense. When CPS was here, it was the last day of spring break, during which we had beautiful weather. In my house, that equates to not as much being done indoors as normal. I mean it wasn't trashed, but it was definitely well lived in.

Welcome, Penny! My kids are 8, 7, 3, 14 months, and new one due in September. My 8 year old goes to Christian school, my 7 year old is actually my stepson and goes to public school, the others are with me most of the time.

Welcome Penny!

I have 4 kiddos as well. Ages 14 (8th grade), 10 (4th grade), almost 9 (3rd grade) and 7 (1st grade).

Donna,
I was investigated several years ago when we lived in Minnesota - I only had the eldest at the time, was pregnant with number 2 and was babysitting for a little boy with Fetal alcohl syndrome. parents were seperated and little guy was living with dad. I was paid by the state for this job. One day there was a knock at my door by the little guy's case worker so I let her in. She then hands me a paper stating that I was under investigation for child endangerment. Apparently, a neighbor that knew the father had seen the kids and I walking into the building the day before and saw my son bump into the other child knock him down and the bump was seen as a push and when I didn't discipline MY child for pushing, like the neighbor thought I should have (without know that it was an accident and both boys knew it and were okay with it. They were 2 and 3 at the time) HE called Dad and dad called the caseworker! Oh and apparently he was wondering why I hadn't been using very many diapers on his child as well. I had already had an arrangement with dad and an okay from the caseworker to begin potty training and it was going VERY well at my home. Didn't need to use 5 diapers a day between the hours of 8:30 AM and 5PM, especially when the child was using the potty several times a day. I told the caseworker my side of the story while the kids played together and she left telling me that I had better be hyper aware of those in the apartments around me because we apparently had a few folks that liked to make bogus alligations against anyone with children - but since this child in question was already part of the system, and I was working for the system - I was a prime target. Great I thought. Two weeks later I stopped providing child care for this little guy - and suggested another provider I knew. She later went on to be granted FULL custody of the little guy because his father was found passed out in his car in the parking lot of Target about 3 months later after never arriving to pick up his child. He had nearly overdosed on something. Mom was still in an in-treatment place for her addictions. But Babe was now SAFE. I wonder whatever happened in that case. Babe is nearing 14 now. I was NEVER charged with anything, but the complaint is STILL on my record with DFS in Minnesota. Well I'm not sure if it is STILL there as I haven't checked in nearly 8 years.

The laundry mountain is getting slightly smaller and my living room is looking presentable again.

We also got news that Ty is going to be able to take the placement exam to see if he can qualify for AP world history next year! For our states academic honors diploma he has to take at least two advanced placement course or two duel credit course or one of each or earn certain scores on the SAT or ACT. The recommendaton is that they take the AP course that way if they can't get into duel credit course or their test scores are a problem at least they'll have their need requirements for graduation done.

Blessings,

Garsy

This is a concern of mine, as we would like to do foster care in the distant future. I would hope they would be able to see that all three complaints were made by the same person, and one with reason to be nasty to us. If this one is closed without incident, then they all will be unfounded, but still...I worry a bit about that future dream of ours.

Donna if it is any consolation there is also a note on that complaint from the caseworker that states that the alligations were completely unfounded. I asked for that note to be included in my file because I knew that I wanted to work with children in the future be that in childcare or schools or whatever. If I'm ever asked about any alligations ever leveled about me I so inform folks about the unfounded alligations in MN and the fact that that is noted in my file as well.
