i cant believe im still sore.

since monday.. now friday im just now able to actually lock out my knees. my quads are STILL sore. haha. anyway, tomorrow i bet they'll still be sore somewhat but im going anyway.

Is this due to a layoff, while visiting your parents? Or had it just been awhile since you last Squatted? I always try to workout daily for moderate brief workouts when making a "comeback", for usually a two week period. I first read about doing that in one of Arthur Jone's Nautilus Bulletins.

quote:

Extreme degrees of muscular soreness can be -- and should be -- avoided by following a carefully outlined "break-in" program of training for at least a week; and in some cases, as much as ninety days of break-in training may be required. Although, in such cases, prolonged break-in training will not be required because of any considerations due to muscular soreness.

During the first week of training -- if at all possible -- a trainee should exercise daily for a period of about thirty minutes; during that first week of training, only one set of one exercise should be performed for each of the major muscle masses of the body -- and these sets should be terminated before reaching a point of muscular failure. However, it is necessary to work the muscles fairly hard -- no amount of light movements will prepare the muscles for the heavy workloads that will follow in the normal course of training.

At least some degree of muscular soreness is almost unavoidable, but it is neither necessary nor desirable to work a new trainee so hard that he will become extremely sore; but should extreme soreness result, then it is absolutely necessary to work the muscles quite hard until such a time that a normal condition returns. If a muscle is worked hard enough to produce an extreme degree of soreness within twenty-four hours, then that muscle should be worked heavily every day until no traces of soreness remain; if not, then the subject will probably be crippled for at least a week.

But while that is certainly true, it is almost impossible to convince a new trainee that he should heavily work a muscle that is already extremely sore; he will tend to feel, rather naturally, that hard work got him into that condition -- and when you suggest even harder work as a cure, it may appear that you are suggesting pouring gasoline on a fire as a means of extinguishing it.

But if extreme muscular soreness results within twenty-four hours after a workout -- and if no exercise is performed on the second day -- then a literally crippling degree of soreness will result on the third day, and the fourth day will usually be far worse.

The worst form of muscular soreness involves the attachments of the tendons and ligaments, and in extreme cases it may be literally impossible to straighten the arms or stand in a normal manner with your heels flat on the floor; in such cases, more exercise -- heavy exercise -- is the only possible solution. Without additional exercise, normal activity may be impossible for as much as ten days or two weeks. But such a situation can be -- and should be -- avoided; if a new trainee suffers that sort of results from his first workout, you have probably seen the last of him -- although he might be tempted to come around a month or so later and burn your house down, with some possible justification.

Some years ago, a man I knew suffered such a degree of muscular soreness as a result of one hard workout that he spent the next five days in the hospital -- and was unable to resume his normal activities as a flight instructor for a period of more than a week after he got out of the hospital; and this man was in fairly hard muscular condition at the time of his first workout -- or at least thought he was.

But, if he had returned for a second hard workout on the following day, then most of the prolonged effects would have been avoided -- and his degree of soreness would never have approached the point that it actually reached. But trying to tell him that had no slightest effect -- with the results mentioned above.

Thus -- since new trainees usually cannot, or will not believe that heavy exercise is capable of reversing the effects that were caused by previous heavy exercise -- it is best to avoid any sort of training that might produce extreme soreness.

Prior to reading that, I would do the very common, workout moderate to heavy one day, than come back a day or two later and do a light to moderate workout to "flush things through". When I tried Jone's method, I really didn't give it much hope and was very surprised with the results. I've been using it for over a decade, whenever I'm making a "comeback".

i dont really mind it so much. but yes it had been 3 weeks since i last squatted. the day after monday i had my quads, hips, lower back, upper back, shoulders and tricpes sore.

but its ok. tomorrow ill be a bit sore. then monday again that ill go just a bit. after a week or two i wont be sore.. instead my thighs will be tight 24/7 and they wont let me sleep again haha.

im thinking of getting a couple dumbbells to use for when im not at patra(its ridiculous cause a couple weeks throw you back more like 4 weeks!). now i know there are dumbbells that act much like barbells(not specific weight, but instead you add plates to them). are there any that can like go up to.. 200 pounds or so? ive seen dumbbells with 110 pounds(they were pretty big)

i kinda want them to do some weird squats when im not here... maybe if i dont find such big ones i can try doing more and more reps(like the 20 rep squats program thing.. sounds kinda hard)

also want them for the summer.. which wont be 2 weeks.. more like 2 months. and i dont want to lose half the progress if had so far

Obviously, the heavier the bigger as far as dumbbells go. I've seen plated loaded dumbbell handles\bars that were two feet, so could hold quite a bit. But it just gets to the point where you start limiting what exercises\movements you can do.

i know.. thats why i said the whole 'big' thing

you cant really hold some big dumbbells in front of you and squat without them hitting your belly or.. worse

Hey Konstantinos,
Are you familiar with kettle bells? These are sold in sizes to over 100 pounds. I have a 35 and a 55 pounder. They are a little more versatile in many movements. They are like a cannonball with a handle.

This is the problem my husband has. He'd love to be set up to work out at home. There's just no way to have what he needs in a hom gym. He could do some things but, like you, not squats. Is that what you want to be able to do? Have something for when you can't get to the gym? But you also need to ask whether it's wise to do that alone (without spotters or at least people aroud).

i always do everything but squats alone... and besides, i can leave the dumbbells on the floor if i cant make the rep

and im mostly interested in squats, deadlifts and overhead press. deadlift i could go for reps, since i always went for max singles so far so some change could help, but in squats ive always done 3*5. idk. ill see.. i have 2 months till i leave patra again so *Shrugs*.

Very cool! But that looked like it hurt!

I did squats today (Tabata method), leg press, leg curl, straight leg deadlift, and I did calf raises finaly! I tried to wear heals yesterday and didn't last very long but at least my toe is well enough for what I want to do in the gym now.

After the deadlifts (1x15 with 35s on the small bar), they were after squats, presses and curls, I thought I was about to die. Now that I'm home, I'm not sure I'm going to be able to get out of this chair. I'm not sore (yet), my entire body's just checked out on me, I think. It's done for, not doing no more! Cool feeling.

it didnt .. hurt.. except for my leg which started bleeding from the scratching haha.

the grunting lets you be stronger, keeps you from getting nauseous(sp?) and tightens your abs. all of which help to be stronger, and from being injured.

So there's science behind the "guy noises" I referred to in another thread?!? Honestly, I had no idea. You learn something new every day.

just try talking while holding your belly. just by trying to make noise your abs will flex.

and if you've read about it a bit on tnation you had better be tight and flexed during heavy compounds or you will break yourself as all the *cough* nice people *cough* at the gym keep telling me

You just adapt to the equipment and environment. There were periods when my living situation made home training the best option. I got a pair of adjustable height sawhorses to use as "safety\spotter" stands for Back Squats and Benching. But I did cut back on my Back Squats and did more Front Squats, Overhead Squats and Hack(enschmidt) Squats. Once a month or so, I'd pay five dollars and go to a gym (it was really a health club at a resort) where I could have a "power" Back Squat workout.

I just summarized, as best I could, my workouts, food, and progress for the last 4 weeks. I've got 8 weeks left till the 4th. Any suggestions for speeding up this slow progress would be great...

This summarizes my food and workouts and resuls:
http://www.keepandshare.com/...?id=566577&da=y

This details my workouts: http://www.keepandshare.com/...?id=566578&da=y

This is what I think I've settled on for a basic meal plan as well....

M1: 1 scoop whey, 1/4c skim milk, 1/8c oats, 1 fish oil, 1 glucosamine, 1 multi

M2: 1 scoop whey, 1/4c skim milk, 1/8c oats

M3: 1/2c LF cottage cheese, 1/4c pineapple, 1 fish oil, 1 glucosamine, 1/2oz almonds

M4: 1 scoop whey, 1/4c skim milk

M5: 4oz chicken, broccoli, 1oz cheese, 1 fish oil, 1 glucosamine

M6: 1 scoop whey, 1/4c skim milk, 1/2T peanut butter

...This is about 1200 calories at 50%P, 20%C, 30F (Chicken is about 4x/week with the others being pork, steak, fish)

On days with at least a 300 cal workout, I add 45g carbs (2 scoops of dh's carbo plus and 2 1/2 oz banana) to M1 and M2 for about 1360 calories at 44%P, 30%C, 26%F

On bigger days with at least 500 calories burned, I add another 45g carbs (4oz sw potato, 1/4c oats added to shakes, and 1/4c more pineapple). This is about 1560 calories at 39%P, 39%C, 22%F.

Thx!

pendlay rows 5*3*80

overhead press 4*65, 1*67.5, 1*65

Another good source of information is at Bodybuilding.com. This site has many articles and helpful hints on dieting, nutrition, weight training, motivation, and many other helpful articles. I've been working out for about 12 years now. I recently stopped going to the Gym and decided to use the Total Gym to strength train. It allows you to do more exercises aimed towards flexibility for martial arts and boxing. Hope this post helps.

http://www.t-nation.com/findArticle.do?article=291diff2

i read this article today (the first part about functional training)and it made me so happy. its like a girl exceeding your expectations!

now i can train every day, with few reps of high loads and few exercizes! just the way i like it. give your max effort for 30 minutes and as soon as you get tired get out and go eat :D

its actually better to mix them when you are at a beginner level. try for strength, and eat a lot for muscle. i dont know if its different for women but i doubt it

horrible workout today. either cause i ate some crud yesterday or cause of bad sleep. i barely got out 1 back squat with 120 kg and i coudlnt do a 180kg deadlift again.

with the squats at some point the bar went too forward and i had to get on one knee(no i didnt ask the squat rack to marry me) so that i wouldnt fall but i got out of it fine.

then on the 180kg deadlift i got dizzy like never before, i got it to my knees then let it back down, then my arm started twitching and stuff

anyway i dont get why i keep forgetting i shouldnt eat crud. i always eat them thinking they have lots of calories and stuff and they help and i forget that whenever i dont eat right i start doing horrible at the gym.

My workouts are in the tank this week so don't feel bad. At least you made it! I went Monday, lifted. Tuesday was awful - dealing with a unexpected death, major upheaval at my kids school. Yesterday I made it to a step class but only because my hubby went to work late and stayed home with a puking child. I forced my way through that class but still just wanted to sit down and cry. It wasn't the distraction I hoped it would be. I thought I'd be OK today but she was still sick this morning. HOPING to make it tomorrow and Saturday and redeem the week.

It's been a rough week so I'm fighting off some stress-eating too. Not good.

oh talking about stress im definitely getting those Z-12 from tnation when i make an order so i can finally sleep. i always take forever to be sleepy/fall asleep and when i do fall asleep i sleep for.. 10-12 hours.so i either must sacrifice quality sleep to have a proper schedule or.. not have a proper schedule

btw sorry for your loss
