Just looking for experiences of others and what diets you have had success with? I do know God's plan is not for us to be struggling with weight. I think we all know we should be healthy, just looking for recommendations....

The "Christian" diets I've come across don't really work at best or descend into legalism or downright weirdness at worst. Being told to "eat when you feel like it" (presumably when God tells you to) or some other "Biblical" trick to dieting is really reaching, IMO. I did have a pretty good book called "Becoming the Woman You Want to Be" but I can't find it now to find the lady's name. I don't mean to sound harsh, "Christian" diets are just no better or worse than other diets - gimmicks don't work. Even if someone tries to tack a scripture to it. I've gotten useful tips, tools, or info from things like Weight Watchers, Body for Life, fitday.com, etc. It just boils down to learning what to do and deciding to do it. There's absolutely no secret to it. So there's also no reason to line someone else's pockets in a quest to lose weight or get healthy.

The problem with diet is they are all the same and you gain the weight back. Despite the name, The Power 3 Diet helped me change, because it is not a diet but a healthy lifestyle change. The first 3 weeks I lost 30lbs and never looked back. It's called the Power 3 for spirit, soul, & body diet. It helped me change my thinking and change on the inside. You have to change on the inside before you can change on the outside. You can check it out if you want at www.power3diet.com Do realize that it is work to change, but God will help you out. It was life changing for me after many failed attempts in the past. God is good! The Power 3 Diet made me more on fire for God and closer to Him. The true is, it was more about God than anything else. Pursue God and He helps you change! Look to God for your help.

I think 'good diet' is an oxymoron. I recommend Intuitive Eating, which is NOT a diet and which can end your struggle with food forever.

You mean biblically based diets? They are basically whole foods diets. Basically eating foods as close as god created is considered the healthiest...hallelujah diet takes that to an extreme by being vegan.. check out the books at the local christian book store as there are quite a few. I have a book called "what the bible says about healthy eating" which is pretty much a whole foods approach. I would recommend that book. You could try the maker's diet but I don't think you need to buy all those supplements they sell.

Most people use 'diet' as shorthand for 'weight-loss diet' and that is the context in this thread.

"Weight-loss diet" still doesn't necessarily equal unhealthy. In fact, the OP mentions specifically that the context is healthy eating. There is no reason for assuming that the OP is looking for a fad diet that will get quick but unhealthy weight loss.

A healthy lifestyle will usually result in weight loss up to a point, but weight will eventually settle out.

A weight-loss diet is still a weight-loss diet, fad or not, and will damage your metabolism, cause a disordered relationship with food, eventually end in the regaining of the weight, and possibly kill your gall bladder in the process. This is why I said 'good diet' is an oxymoron. And it is why I don't think ANY weight-loss diet is 'healthy eating.'

Without getting too deep in to the food laws, I personally have found that staying away from "scavengers" has been a pretty good rule of thumb. I haven't eaten pork in 10 years. I'm not saying that alone is the key to living healthy, but it has worked for me. I try to stay away from too much fat. One important thing to remember is try not to think in terms of a "diet," but think about it as "lifestyle" change. Diets usually indicate a temporary change. And you want to make better eating choices from now on and not just temporarily.

If weight loss is the ONLY reason to change your diet, sure, it can be harmful. I shed 50 pounds and am healthier at 56 than I was a 26 or 36. I took a whole year to shed the weight and moderate exercise was part of the changes that I incorporated when I began 9 years ago.

Jenny- That's not true if you if you maintain the change and if the changes are healthy. It's when you yo-yo back and forth between eating well and eating poorly that your body suffers. A healthy diet is not a "disordered relationship with food." An unhealthy diet is.

What I said is true of any diet that requires you to eat fewer calories than your body desires. I don't care to argue the point-you and I will never agree because you think the only 'good' eating is what you consider 'clean' eating and you have absolutely no room in your view for a normal, relaxed relationship with food. I posted for the benefit of the OP, and my suggestion stands: Read Intuitive Eating and stop the cycle.

Actually, I am constantly learning what is the most nutritious food and what is moderation... as well as learning what constitutes a "normal, relaxed relationship with food." I do not in any way believe that my habits are the only way to get the nutrition your body needs... there are large varieties of foods that will benefit your body that I would never touch because of my tastes & culture, beliefs aside. There are also many "foods" that I no longer consider edible (or normal) because they have been stripped of nutrition or have known poisons added to them. I would appreciate it if you would not attack me personally or act as if you know what I am thinking, but stick with the subject at hand. It's probably true that you and I will never agree on what constitutes a healthy diet... you are entitled to your opinion and diet based on your research, just like I am entitled to mine.

I need to differ, Jenny (but in a light hearted way) - the amount of calories my body "desires" is so not healthy on any level! Bu seriously, my problem with the intuitive or "Spirit led" or programs that teach people to eat when or what their body "cues" them to eat is a bad idea because our bodies are so very far askew from what they were created to be. We're affected by so many external cues and things our society has programmed us to want or even to think our bodies need. Before I got serious about bringing my flesh (because that's definitely what was ruling me) into submission, I had a way too relaxed relationship with food! Ideally, do I need to be bringing my body into Godly submission? Sure, in lots of areas. But on this one, I also need to subject my body to common sense, moderation, and a good dose of discipline. I can't be ruled by my desires. I was very much ruled by food; it's a constant struggle to stay on top of it and to learn to eat deliberately and with a purpose. Learning how to do this has taught valuable lessons that apply well to spiritual matters, financial restraint, and lots of things. If we all know and hear constantly that yo yo dieting and fads are dangerous and inneffective, why are these people still getting rich? It's because what we all know we need to do is more than we want to do (it's hard) and people still hold out hope that there's a quick fix. It just doesn't work that way. It's not that complicated and there's just no reason to buy into the hype that's just based on greed and not on anything substantive or productive. And I think it gripes me most when people put the label "Christian" on something and then try to charge $99.95 to share the benfit of their "revelation". I'm happy to tell anyone for free how to lose weight (you already know): eat less/better, move more, and stick with it. But I'll never get rich with it because that's not what people want to hear.

A normal, relaxed relationship with food was very beneficial in getting me to be 50 pounds overweight. Here's an axiom you can take to the bank, tattoo on your body, or cross-stitch for your kitchen wall: The easiest things to grow in a garden are weeds. It applies to all sorts of things including relationships, eating, exercise, career, spiritual growth, retirement, etc. Normal and relaxed was the method employed by the grasshopper.

For a Biblically based program, that encourages healthy balanced eating in the correct portions, I would recommend First Place. Although certain parts of the Bible study seemed to be drawn out of context, not much of it was. (for the 1st book that we did, and are just about to finish) The program consists of doing a daily Bible study, eating a variety of foods, and correct portion sizes... while balancing carbs/protein/fats.

I had no idea there was such a thing as a 'christian diet'. But I eat clean(foods that are not fried and low in fat), snack on veggies, regular excercise, and eat a fair portion meal(no big meals, its a waste of calories). I guess a christian diet then would be eating what you need, dont be a glutton and overconsume having so much food go to waste.

Try reading "Greater Health God's Way" by Stormie Omartian. It's not a diet but a lifestyle. It's simiply eating the way God intended in the first place.
