Watching that spectacle and worship of the pope in Yankee Stadium made me want to vomit.

If they only used that energy to worship Jesus Christ!

It just blows my mind that the leader of the world's LARGEST child exploitation ring would warrant so much adoration. I would have expected the FBI to have arrested him as soon as he stepped off "Air Pope".

Sox fan, hey CHOWDA you need to town it down some in your posts.
Be more sensitive . . . .

I wasn't excited

1. The media way over covered this event.

I honestly haven't paid too much attention to the media. I was too busy actually being there. :D

2. The Pope is a mere man, why worship him, he's not the CHRIST he's just a guy.

We don't worship the Pope. We ONLY worship Christ Our Lord. And we believe the Pope is the successor to Peter, who we also believe was picked by the Lord to head His Church here on Earth while He's in Heaven.

3. Laura Ingraham's Pope worship made her show unlistenable last week.

Who's Laura Ingraham?

4. I met a man who was molested by a Priest and he's still mad as fire to this day.

Quite understandable. :( But the Pope is actively working to address this issue. Indeed, he personally met with 5 victims to hear their stories and talk with them. He also addressed the issue at the Mass I attended. There were many ways the Church failed the victims, but we need to learn from these painful lessons and work harder to protect our children.

In fact, here's the Pope's remarks:
quote:

It is in the context of this hope born of God’s love and fidelity that I acknowledge the pain which the Church in America has experienced as a result of the sexual abuse of minors. No words of mine could describe the pain and harm inflicted by such abuse. It is important that those who have suffered be given loving pastoral attention. Nor can I adequately describe the damage that has occurred within the community of the Church. Great efforts have already been made to deal honestly and fairly with this tragic situation, and to ensure that children – whom our Lord loves so deeply (cf. Mk 10:14), and who are our greatest treasure – can grow up in a safe environment. These efforts to protect children must continue. Yesterday I spoke with your Bishops about this. Today I encourage each of you to do what you can to foster healing and reconciliation, and to assist those who have been hurt. Also, I ask you to love your priests, and to affirm them in the excellent work that they do. And above all, pray that the Holy Spirit will pour out his gifts upon the Church, the gifts that lead to conversion, forgiveness and growth in holiness.

Wise words. I don't know what I can do to assist the ones hurt, but I will try to find out ways to prevent these things from ever happening again. In addition, we need to support the priests who are true shepherds and encourage them and help them protect the children.

quote:

5. The Pope is 81 years old, do you think he's in touch with the world?

Sounds to me like he's got 81 years of experience in the world, he's seen humanity at its darkest and at it's brightest. He's dedicated his entire adult life to serving the Lord Jesus Christ. I think he's likely more in touch with the world than I am.

I'm not a Catholic, and have plenty of issues with their way of doing things, but to read some of the hatred, vitriol, and bitterness in this thread is pretty darned disappointing.

Back to the OP, no, I am not excited.

Eggs Benedict, I can get excited about.

I am not Catholic, but I don't think they will ever consider Americans to be a Pope. So, I don't get all hipped up over a European.

Lurker - thanks for the message. I enjoyed the pictures; what an opportunity. I have not had the experience of a Papal Mass but it is on my "to do" list (I just went to Graceland in Memphis a couple of months ago, so I am making progress...).

As for some of the rhetoric in this thread - its nothing short of what I expected out of the people from whom I expected it.

I appreciate you starting the thread, and I think people here should take note that the Catholics can easiliy fill a stadium with 57,000 people to worship God and praise Jesus, with another 57,000 outside wishing they could get in, and millions of others following the activities at home, just like me.

If only a single Protestant Church could rally that kind of communion of shared faith and practice, and interest and passion about faith. But, alas....

That's all I read in the negative posts here - sour grapes.

I am with you on that.

yay! The thread is reopened!

Anyways, I added a few new pictures from that day to my Flickr account. I managed to get tickets to go to the Catholic University of America's "Mall" (aka, their huge lawn, what is it with the East Coast calling large lawns "malls" ?). the Pope was there to give a talk to Catholic educators and afterwards would be doing a drive in the Popemobile around the campus to say goodbye to us. :)

Also, I took a small video from my camera the day of the Mass and uploaded it to Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NvXUTi3il1U

It was really great, and reading his words from the various speeches, and seeing the things he did, really made me have a stronger bit of hope in Jesus. Because if this humble little German professor can do such a good pastoral job with us 1billion+ Catholics when he puts his faith in Christ, it really drives home how powerful our Lord Jesus is. :)
