Reading reports like this is *almost* enough to tempt me to move south.

But then I step out of air conditioning (I am working from the library today since it's air-conditioned!) into my car...and I think of heat...and seven lanes of traffic each way...and have second thoughts.

but DANIEL! You'd get to hear so much more SG music! And you could ride the bus or train and not have to worry about 7 lanes of traffic!

True, but that still doesn't solve the heat problem.

Say, maybe we should just move Atlanta north.

Maybe nobody told you when you were down here last year.
There are SECRET INGREDIENTS in Country Ham, Redeye Gravy, GRITS, Southern Fried Chicken, pulled pork, ribs, and COCA COLA that thins out your blood, so the heat doesn't bother you as much.

I've always suspected this, so it's great to get confirmation from a reliable source.

Whew! What a night!! You talk about CAMPMEETING!!

It got started with Dr. Jerry & Little Jan (with Woody Beatty) singing some of their fan favorites, including "On My Mother's Side", "Pour It On", "Come And Dine" and of course, the one that got everyone teary-eyed, "I Firmly Promise You", complete with Brother Wendy's distinctive voice on the last chorus. Jan is without a doubt, the sweetest, prettiest and classiest lady that has ever graced a SG stage. I enjoyed a nice conversation with her. We even talked about colaborating on a special project in the very near future... but we're not telling anymore about it... just yet!

Next up, The Mighty Kingsmen set the stage afire with their trademark Southern Style Quartet singing. Of course, they did a few classics, like "Beautiful Home", but the best part was when The Spirit fell while they were singing "When God Ran". I'm actually kinda liking them with the tracks. I know...I know... Don't get me wrong, I love a live band as good as anyone, but really, they can still get it done with the tracks, too. We had a awesome time with the guys afterwards. You need to ask Mrs. Rita about Huggy's bottle of sleeping pills. (Hint: Not for the squeemish stomach. THEY STINK!!)

Again, The Diplomats won the crowd over from the first strains of Dottie Rambo's famous "The Holy Hills Of Heaven Call Me". The crowd demanded another helping of Joe Brown singing "Lonesome Road". Once again, he delivered. Low notes were served, seats were rattled, and smiles abounded. Then, without much warning the Wind of The Holy Ghost swept through as they sang several encores of "When I Got Up". People were on their feet praising the Lord, and several people were shouting! Mrs. Rita, too, was blessed and she did a little shoutin', herself. Jimmy joked, "Ya'll better look out over here on this side. If she takes off, she's liable to wipe out that whole section!" I just love to see them get high in The Spirit! They segued into another male quartet set featuring the legendary Les Beasley. I think he sounded better tonight than I've heard him in 30 years. He said he enjoyed singing with CoCo, Jimmy & Joe as much as anyone that he has EVER performed with. Former Diplomat pianist Lamar Newton played for this group.

Just when you thought it couldn't get any better.... IT DOES!! Karen Peck & New River hit the stage, and... let's just say it like it was... IT WAS ON!!!! "Last Night", "I'm Saved", and "Gonna Get Up" hit the spot dead on. I had to leave the building for a few minutes to take an emergency call, but when I came back in, the place was rocking with "Four Days Late". That Campmeeting atmosphere was still lingering heavy. It was SO good, that I don't even remember what else they sang, but I know KP sang a moving solo out in the crowd, and gave a prayer request and testimony about their mother's recent illness. Of course, they did an encore of "Four Days". they left the audience wanting more.

After a short intermission, all the singers gathered on stage and we were blessed with such favorites as "Glory Road", "God Walks The Dark Hills" and "There's Just Something About That Name". It was good to see the various conglomerations and the sincere camaraderie of each group. (Pardon the spelling... it's 1:15 am)

Eva Mae LeFevre was in the crowd tonight. Dr. Jerry recognized the fact that he, she, Les and Little Jan were SGMA Hall Of Fame honorees, and that soon, another person present would be enshrined there.... Mr. Ray Dean Reese. What a great honor to get to visit with each of these legends one more time.

Robert & Carol York, Mr. Scripture and Rebecca11368 were in attendance. Maybe some more of you, but right now, I'm not thinking to clearly! I'm wore out from laughing at Corey, Phillip, Haorld, Rita, Karen and "Herschel". I'll quickly tell you that tonight was 'Pick-On-Karen-Peck-Night". Phillip Hughes and Jesse really had her going. Jesse was acting like he was... er... um... (how do I say this diplomatically, no pun intended)... well, he was acting like he was a few French Fries short of a Happy Meal." Phillip told KP that "Herschel" just LOVED her hit song, "Hey", and that she should dedicate it to him from the stage. This went on ALL night, and right before the concert was over, I think she finally figured out that she had been HAD! It was SO funny. If I were Phillip, I'd watch my back. As The Hayes Family sings, "There WILL be a payday someday!" Then everyone got to messing with Mrs. Rita (who had a WEAK stomach. It was even MORE funny!! Ain't it FUN to be a CHRISTIAN????

Well, I gotta go. I've got a chiropractic appointment in a few, short hours.

Oh--- Right before I go. I ask you to PLEASE remember our buddy, Tony Dykes of The Greesons when you pray. Many of you saw where he'd been given a terrible report on the status of his cancer diagnosis. But we serve a God that can and will heal. We're all claiming victory over this. Please band together with us when you talk to The Father.

Love to all,
JChaz

Thanks for the updates, JChaz. I glad to hear that things are going well with The Diplomats. I really wish I could've been there. Heard that they had a unexpected "visitor" Thursday night. The nerve of those people to be so blatanly obnoxious. But, I'm glad that God still moved all the more, despite the deceptive motives. I pray that God will continue to bless The Diplomat's ministry even when people like that ar trying to discredit them. They are a great example of grace under fire, even if, as in this case, it is just from a little 'light'.

Last night was ANOTHER great concert. I missed the first hour, because I had to direct a photo shoot in Rome, GA for a group that Corey and I have been recording the last few weeks. I missed hearing Dr. Jerry & Little Jan sing "Thomas"... one of my alltime favorite songs written by sweet Dee Gaskin. Foster said it was BEAUTIFUL!!

I also missed out on hearing Heirborn, a local group that really knows how to get the crowd going. Was good to see them at the table, though. Really a good bunch of guys. Randy Miller was on stage when I walked in, and he had just simmered down his comedy routines, and was pointing to his serious closing tune. The crowd ate it up, and he left the stage to a hearty standing ovation. He's a super guy.

The Carolina Crossmen were up next. It had been a long time since I had seen them, and I must say that I was pleased that they still do a great job. Their lead singer did a dead on imitation of Jake Hess during a lighter moment of the program. They are just good ole mountain boys who seem to really love what they do. You can usually catch them at The Inspirations' Singing In The Smokies.

The Dips were (as is usual) WIDE OPEN and seemed to be really 'in the pocket'. Mrs. Rita gave an emotional testimony during "There's A Blessing Somewhere In This Trial". Is there a more sincere lady in our business? She just really poured out her heart to the fans during their stand. Once again, Joe brought the house down for a THIRD time with "Lonesome Road". Mr. Les Beasley sang a few FBQ 'oldies', much to the thrill of the audience. I was talking with Dustin Sweatman as The Dips were finishing up with a rousing old Hinson barn-burner, "Joy Comes in The Morning". Dustin exclaimed, "MAN! We gotta follow THAT???"

And they did... They opened with a haunting acapella arrangement of "I Love To Tell The Story" that was especially meaningful to Foster!! Then they stepped it up and went into the Campmeeting tune, "When They Ring The Bells Of Heaven". BTW: Jimmy needs to change the name from Diplomats Homecoming to Diplomats CAMPMEETING! 'Cause that what it's been all weekend. MTT tore it up with "Just a Little Closer Home" and "Hallelujah, I'm Going Home"-- complete with THREE encores. The night ended with all the groups on stage. It was remarkably good, but the BEST part was "Glory Road". That tired, old song just seems to get revived EVERY time that Eric Phillips sings it. If it wasn't for him, I'd say that song needed to be retired!! But he just keeps pumping new life into it each night.

Foster went to the Church Service this morning, and said that Eric even sang it great in the morning, too. That's saying a lot for ANY tenor singer to even agree to try it! She said that the mix of songs by The Dips And MTT were just the perfect set up for The Man Of God, Rev. Mr. Trammell. She said he preached THE BEST sermon on Abraham & Isaac that she'd ever heard. Maybe Jimmy will start a church and he could be the choir director and Mark could preach. That'd be AWESOME. Just so I got to either play the piano or organ... Shoot, I'd even settle for running sound for that! (Naw, they need to just keep doing what they're doing, 'cause it certainly is good, and God is obviously blessing it.)

Well, folks, that's a wrap as they say in the TV biz. Hope you've enjoyed my take on The Diplomats' Homecoming/Campmeeting. SEE YA NEXT YEAR???

It was good to see local Bluegrass group, The Servers back on the Fullerville stage. Group leader Kelly McCord has returned from a stint performing with the Paul William Trio, a successful BG group. But, Kelly and company just really seem to fit together. Hope they decide to keep singing. Our area needs a really tight BG group, and THEY are it!!

That's GREAT news!!!!!
I've really missed them.
They are a TERRIFIC BG group.

Hey, Jim...

Missed seeing you at F'ville. Yep, I think you'd like the new version of "The Servers". The new guy is really good, and Kelly sounds as good as ever. The other two gentlemen (bass picker & banjo picker) are still there. The older guy that just sang wasn't there. Don't know if he's 'retired' or not.

You gonna be at SCHS Saturday for the TonyFest?

JChaz~~ GREAT report!! I agree it was more like camp meeting. It was great to meet you and Linda.
I needed the spiritual boost that this weekend provided. The Dips were AWESOME. The energy and spark was there right from the beginning song. When Ms. Rita spoke her heart, not a dry eye in the place. Words of encouragement and hope were never more welcome.Corey and Jim, these are 2 of the hardest working men, without them workng the sound, music, talking to the crowds, it would not have been the same. My Steve cannot stop trying to imitate Joe!! ( SANG it Joesph) and Michael has such musical talent!!
Karen Peck and New River were terrific, hadn't seen them in awhile. " My God will Always be Enough" could not have been better. Ms. Peck was on the floor, walking among the fans, truly ministering in song.
Kingsmen were great, MTT was great and Bro Mark brought the most wonderful early-Father's day message that touched all hearts.
I think next year Jim should do " Campmeeting Style". Remeber the good old days when you could form a huge choir of singers who'd rehearse in the afternoon and then sing that night? I'd LOVE to be part of that!!

Just want to thank you folks for the comments you gave about our Homecoming , I also want to thank everyone that grace our stage each night and the many loyal southern gospel fans that made our Homecoming a great success. But most of all I want to give God all the praise for the free spirit he allow in the house each night .
I know a lot of people has a concern about where Southern Gospel Music will be in a few years, let me say this, This year at our homecoming we had more young folks and young adults enjoy the greatest music in the world and coming every night .So I firmly believe if you keep God first and let the words and music bring a smile to the face or a clap to the hands or maybe a tear to the eyes then this great music will be here for a lifetime. Just remember we have to win the lost at any cost
