I think there is another unfortunate reason that nobody has really mentioned, and that has to do with musical style. In the "world" two of the biggest genres of music are rock and country. Some like both, but many will take one but refuse the other. I know this is is rathe broad strokes, but I think that a lot of CCM music is more closely related to pop and rock styles, and Southern Gospel is more closely related to country. (I'm not saying they are equal, just related.) A lot of people just don't like the style of SG. I live in the Northeast (Long Island) which is not exactly a bastian of Southern Gospel :-( but while a few people in our church enjoy SG music, many do not. They would go to a CCM concert in a heartbeat, but simply don't like SG -- including Gaither. It has nothing to do with the words, message, etc. but just the musical style. Maybe if there was a way to get more people hooked on the SG style while they are still young, it would help. When there are no radio stations pushing SG in our area, and Christian bookstores promote primarily CCM, it is rather difficult.
