I agree with this post. I think we are on the same page. It's just that I've always felt that all of those things, though not focused on praise and/or worship, still have that as the underlying purpose. I certainly do not take issue with dbmurray's excellent post.

I think that it comes down to exposure. When is the last time you found a real good radio station that plays southern gospel music. I am lucky to have one where i live but i travel alot and cannot find a radio station in many places. Churches are also harder to find ones that sing hymns and southern gospel style songs as most have went to praise and worship wich i do not relate to well. Most of the CCM churches and radio stations play a version of eagles/american idol song melody with changed lyrics that plenty of people relate to. I am not one of those. I like the old qt. music best and newer qt. music mixed in along with some Bluegrass gospel. The main need is exposure. Southern gospel music is harder and harder to find. Almost non existant in secular stores and getting scarce in Gospel bookstores especially if you are looking for a non Gaither produced group. Just my thoughts. Exposure and availablity is the key to growing this music for the future.

I think there is another unfortunate reason that nobody has really mentioned, and that has to do with musical style. In the "world" two of the biggest genres of music are rock and country. Some like both, but many will take one but refuse the other.

I know this is is rathe broad strokes, but I think that a lot of CCM music is more closely related to pop and rock styles, and Southern Gospel is more closely related to country. (I'm not saying they are equal, just related.) A lot of people just don't like the style of SG.

I live in the Northeast (Long Island) which is not exactly a bastian of Southern Gospel :-( but while a few people in our church enjoy SG music, many do not. They would go to a CCM concert in a heartbeat, but simply don't like SG -- including Gaither. It has nothing to do with the words, message, etc. but just the musical style.

Maybe if there was a way to get more people hooked on the SG style while they are still young, it would help. When there are no radio stations pushing SG in our area, and Christian bookstores promote primarily CCM, it is rather difficult.

As far as I can tell, Texas is at the outermost edge of the SG area. We don't get many groups who make it out this far very often. There are some. Actually, if it makes y'all feel any better, I was told by someone that works for Third Day (CCM for those not in the know) that they don't do concerts in the Austin area because the attendance is too low. That might have something to do with UT campus being in Austin. We do have lots of big secular music festivals here that hit the news in full force... South by Southwest being one of them. No SG festivals though anywhere near here to my knowledge. They have big CCM festivals on the east and west coasts, though.

Anyway, I think "O' Brother Where Art Thou" did a lot for bluegrass. Now people at least know what bluegrass sounds like. I am still amazed how many people will admit that they like bluegrass or that they go to bluegrass festivals ocassionally.

These are just my thoughts so take them as you may. [:)] I think one of the strikes against SG is that it can be seen as death music. What I mean by that, is how many CCM songs are about dying? Yet there are a lot of SG songs that deal with death and heaven, etc. People just don't want to think about death. That's my first thought. Secondly, I think that SG music tends to deal more with our experience in the christian faith while CCM deals more with our relationship to God. One idea might be to have more P&W songs written and sung in the SG genre. That might get some of the P&W people interested.

There is something very important here. Exposure. There are not many SGM radio stations around. None anywhere that I can listen to at all. But, back in the '60's, J G Whitfield had an idea that he talked to Les Beasly about that made Gospel Music as it was called back then a household name. That is "The Gospel Singing Jubilee." Many of the groups back then got there big exposure on the Jubilee. It was an hour of great music every Sunday morning. The main host group was the Florida Boys, then the Dixie Echoes, the Happy Goodman Family. There was a young man that often sang, I have since forgotten his name. There was also a guest group every week. This was the first time that I heard the Cathedral Quartet sing as well as many others. Many feel that Gaither has been mixing in so much contemporary music into his concerts lately that the have quit listening. A real show case program that reflects the quality of SGM would be a big boost to the genre. Just my opinion.

This is more of a question than comment. It seems that SG rises and falls like waves. Its popularity may be down, but it will come back. The late 70s SG was at the top then it seemed to go away until Gold City made it popular again in the 90s. Gaither videos re captured the mkt. with the old faces doing a sing along. Now it seems like that has gotten old and tired and the music is waiting on a new face/group to bring it back. Even if it is not in a "pure" form. Something like the Crabb family did with there great non traditional sound. Am I way off base about the ups and downs. ? The underlaying fear in the thread--the music is dying--may be unfounded. Your thoughts?
