spiritchsr1 -> Garden question? Does anyone know about planting onions? (4/11/2008 7:22:16 AM)

I've tried planting onions several times over the years buying the oinion sets in the bags. they always go to seed on me and never form the onion in the root. Someone told me it's a two year cycle plant. Anyone have any ideas?

I found something on GardenWeb that said onions are two-year cycle plants IF you grow them from seed. My parents grow onions from sets each year, but I'm not sure why yours don't produce "fruit." Are you making sure they get plenty of water? What kind of soil do you have? Maybe the onions would like some fertilizer.

I found some info on another website that said, "If during the period before harvest, the stems begin to swell at the base, immediately bend the stems over. This should prevent your onions from going to seed."

Here's a link to an onion fact sheet: http://extension.usu.edu/files/factsheets/onionsf.pdf

Hope you have more success this year - homegrown onions are so good!

It could also have something to do with the type of onion, whether it is short-day or long-day.
