ASSEMBLYMAN BEALL PROPOSES BIG INCREASE

SACRAMENTO - Joe Six-pack will have to pay a lot more to get his buzz on if Assemblyman Jim Beall has his way.

The San Jose Democrat on Thursday proposed raising the beer tax by $1.80 per six-pack, or 30 cents per can or bottle. The current tax is 2 cents per can. That's an increase of about 1,500 percent.

Beall said the tax would generate $2 billion a year to fund health care services, crime prevention and programs to prevent underage drinking and addiction.

Looks like smokes are about tapped out for tax revenues, time to move on to beer. $1.80 is good enough for now, they'll be back on an as-needed basis.

Ohh...man..., and I was looking forward to seeing a $1.00 tax a can; $6.00 on a 6-Pack. Jim Beall, you've let me down; Ohh... humbug.

stamper_ben -> RE: Higher state tax on beer? (4/11/2008 2:01:39 PM)

Next will be a tax on the sin foods... Devils food cakes, Dr. Pepper, chips...

But it's for health care services, and crime prevention and programs to educate the children on what they think are bad things. That HAS to make it right, right?

rainbowtvp -> RE: Higher state tax on beer? (4/11/2008 2:06:24 PM)

Well... in fairness... you don't have 17,000 people a year killed in junk food related traffic accidents...

They tried that in Texas a couple of sessions ago, but it didn't pass.

Gas, cigarettes, alcohol and probably the "sin foods" make great tax targets. Taxes raise the greatest amount of revenue when they have "inelastic demand curves" - i.e. the volume consumed doesn't really react much to price. You can raise the price by 20% but the level of demand doesn't go down so tax revenues per mil of tax rate go up.

Not that many items have the kind of inelasticity of demand as the "sin" goods. Plus, they usually impact a minority of taxpayers which means that the majority usually approves of it, or at least doesn't strenuously object.

So you get to raise more gross dollars of taxes with smallest amount of stated tax percentage increase, and never pay much of a political price.

Nice little trick when you can get away with it.

That's fine on tobacco, but when it starts impacting my local microbrew, someone's clearly gone too far.

All kidding aside; after all I do buy beer or wine now and then, to drink while eating spaghetti or steamed crabs (or sometimes to set my hair with beer [:D]); There is a proposed raising on Alcoholic Beverages in my state too:
SENATE BILL 232
EMERGENCY BILL
File Code: Taxes - Miscellaneous
Sponsored By:
Senator Forehand
Entitled:
Alcoholic Beverage Tax - Rates
Synopsis:
Increasing the State tax rates for alcoholic beverages in Maryland from $1.50 to $4.50 per gallon for distilled spirits, from 40 cents to $1.20 per gallon for wine, and from 9 cents to 54 cents per gallon for beer; expressing the State tax rates for alcoholic beverages alternatively as 89.1843 cents for each 0.75-liter container of distilled spirits, 23.7825 cents for each 0.75-liter container of wine, and 5.0625 cents for each 12-ounce container of beer; etc.

I think we should dress up like liquore store employees, raid liquor stores and dump all the beer into a lake or harbor in protest.

Who's with me!!?

Instead, just hide it in my basement ;)

Can we just dump the law-makers in favor of these kinds of bills in the nearest slime covered pond?

I bet the number of people killed by drivers who are paying more attention to their food than the road is higher than you might think.

We don't have crime and problems in this country because of a lack of tax dollars.

Government is not your God.

Gaaah. What a copout.

If you need more money, raise property taxes! That way, high spending affects everyone, not just an unfortunate minority. These guys need to be more accountable.

This is coming from a tax-and-spend Democrat (who thinks Republicans also tend to fund tax cuts with similar kinds of baloney.)

What do you mean? Yes, higher property taxes do affect everyone. How does that make them more desirable? Even if a democrat did propose it, a tax like this is one that you can opt out of by not buying what is being taxed. It's not like beer is a need.

Hey, tax church attendance, too. It's not like you have to go to church, you can always "opt out". Or, car seats for children. That would control the population...

As long as your ox isn't being gored, things are peachy! Love it!

its_GO_time -> RE: Higher state tax on beer? (4/12/2008 9:02:18 AM)

I propose a Bible tax. Of course part of the revenue, would go to re-education camps(for the children, of course), to show how The State, is your very present help in time of trouble.

As a Milwaukean I believe any tax on beer is unAmerican.

Ben Franklin said
quote:

Beer is living proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.

...as for taxing church attendance... there's that constitution thingy (or whats left of it) to get in the way.

I have a simple proposal: the state take all of your income since you love taxes that much.

In some places they have proposed a junk food tax. In Seattle of all places, the officals had the nerve to propose a tax on java. And I am not talking about the computer langauge.

SonInMe1 -> RE: Higher state tax on beer? (4/12/2008 10:51:43 PM)

Time for a Krispie Kreme Party....throw all those overtaxed donuts into the harbor.

Well, we're talking California here and there is the Prop 13 law that they haven't been able to overturn that caps the property taxes. If not for that law then the majority of oldtime homeowners wouldn't be able to still be in their homes. So they HAVE to look elsewhere for additional revenue rather than doing the obvious and cutting spending.

jbow -> RE: Higher state tax on beer? (4/14/2008 3:57:54 PM)

Well, that tears it!

I think we need to forget about building a wall on our southern border and build one on our western border. I think California pose's a bigger threat to the rest of the country than illegal immigration does...

I would be perfectly happy being in the $1 Million/year + 100% tax bracket (Ok, 91%, but factor in state taxes and it's close) that was around under Republican President Eisenhower, but finally repealed by Kennedy.
