paulsbride -> Spearmint (4/11/2008 3:18:18 PM)

A month or so ago I bought some spearmint (simply because it smelt good!!) and planted it... now there is an abundance of spearmint leaves growing and I don't know what to do with it!!
I like mint added to ice tea, so I know I can do that.
Any other ideas?

I have a huge spot of spearmint in our yeard. It smells good. My hubby makes a syrup with it. I wish that it was peppermint instead. I have not found much to do with spearmint.

I hope someone has some good ideas, because I would love to hear them too.

What do you do with the syrup?

*sigh* come on spearmint lovers!! We need ideas!

Paulsbride, did you plant it in the ground or in a container? Be aware that it is invasive. Every autumn I pull out 90% of mine. I don't want to get rid of it altogether but you have to keep it under control.

I like to put a leaf in my mouth while I'm working in the garden. It's a nice refreshing flavor.

It is in a container. [:)]

I hope you're not expecting it to stay there! lol

It generally behaves fairly well if you cut it back regularly!

I don't have spearmint ~ I've got pineapple and ordinary mint and another one (possibly, it may be dead though ~ but I can't remember what variety it is)...

Hubby and kids put the syrup on pancakes and ice cream, and to flavor drinks. They may use it for other stuff but I don't remember right off.

Our patch (we didn't plant it) is about the size of a room. It is nice stuff to have as it is nice to walk on, looks pretty, smells good and mows easily.

How do you make the syrup?

Spearment is very good in ice tea. In fact we have at least five diferent kinds of mint in our yard. Peperment, apple mint, spearement, black forest mint, and orange mint.

My wife uses it to make ice tea with. She makes five gallons at a time. She uses about 20 lipton tea bags, a bottle of "Real Lemon" lemon juice, surgar, a small bottle of lime juice, and a whole bunch of mint. She lets the mint sit overnight in the 5 gallon pot. This makes some dynomite iced tea.

I was just watching Rachael Ray and she said she uses mint with basil to make pesto.

Another idea I heard was to put one leaf of mint into ice cubes before freezing. Then when it melts in your glass of ice water, it's a nice little hint of flavor.

Here's an idea for the mint - sounds yummy.

Dry the leaves for tea.

Many things. You may use it in salads as flavour; infuse it as herb tea; mouth freshener any time esp. when you eat something to ward off the smell, decorate dishes with the leaves, you may even dehydrate it and use to last for ages...and many more I am sure.

SweetLittleErin -> RE: Spearmint (5/10/2008 9:53:26 AM)

Good question. My SIL gave me a start and I asked her what to do with it and she said she just puts it in her tea..and yeah...it had taken over 1/2 her garden...hence the reason I got some!
