Memaw. -> Full Or Bare Cupboards? (4/11/2008 3:27:58 PM)

Going through my cupboards today to write a list for grocery shopping, I started wondering how long the food I do have on hand would last.

I figured that realistically, there is about a weeks worth of groceries in the cupboards and refrigerator.

So, I started wondering, is this the "typical" amount of groceries other people have in their homes, or is it more or less?

If you couldn't get to the store, or had no money, how long would the groceries you do have on hand last in your house?

I keep enough beans and rice and flour and such on hand usually that we could stretch one grocery run (for fill ins) into a months worth of food....but it would be a very boring menu....lol. I don't like getting down that low, but I know there is always the possibility (esp since we don't believe in credit cards so we literally only use cash for everything we get...and sometimes things just come up that were unexpected).

Prior to Sept 23, 2005, I had a freezer with enough meat & vegetables to last at least a couple of months if we literally never ate anything else. I'd be hard put to last that long for breakfast type foods, but I had enough oatmeal, flour, sugar, etc, to go for a week or two.

Then came hurricane Rita--the meat went into the trash, the veggies (peas & corn, anyway) were poured out for the neighbor's cows to eat. The freezer was old already, once I got it cleaned I just got rid of it.

Now, I'd be lucky to have enough food to go a week without a grocery run. DH works out of state, DS is in college, and while he is back living at home for the moment, he'll be moving back to main campus next semester, so I have not much incentive to cook, or to stock the fridge & cabinets to cook.

I still have the habit, though, of going and opening the cabinet doors to see what I have to cook with--just not much there except old stuff that probably needs to be thrown out, and a little bit of "current" stock.

I keep stocked up on chili, corned beef hash, soup, spaghetti and sauce, beans and rice, tuna and things like that. I could make it last at least a month. Unfortunately Hubby thinks he would die without coke and chocolate so we go shopping more often than we should. Ah.........simple pleasures! God is good. We have the things we need and we usually have the little pleasure that we all enjoy. Oh, yeah, ice cream too. Keep a supply of ice cream on hand in case of an emergency.

I love it when our lazy susan is full of yummy snacks! I am a major snacker.

My cupboards would last me months[&:]

And I do mean months... not days or weeks, but months...

I'm working on getting the contents down considerably.

Sounds like mine, Aga [;)] . . . I have always tried to stock up a bit when I hit sales -- or when I finally remember to buy something I've run out of. I often joke about having enough in my freezer to last months.

agapetos -> RE: Full Or Bare Cupboards? (4/12/2008 7:46:27 AM)

I just don't have the room to keep as much as I have really... I have just completed a list of everything I have in my cupboards (which is why I know I can keep going for months) and so can work on bringing the levels down some... keeping some foods in the kitchen is a good idea... keeping enough to feed the 5,000 isn't...

Yeah, Aga -- for that it would only require 1 loaf & 5 fish! [:D][:D]

kohls356 -> RE: Full Or Bare Cupboards? (4/12/2008 1:09:36 PM)

I think if I couldn't get to the store I have enough to make meals or have something to eat for about a month. That doesn't mean snacks so my kids would be going nuts for snacks but I could make something to eat.

I don't have that kind of stuff for the refrigerator but that stuff wouldn't last a month anyway.

Miss Giggles -> RE: Full Or Bare Cupboards? (4/12/2008 1:24:56 PM)

Mine are pretty empty. However since the grocery store is across the street it doesn't matter. I would like to be better at stocking up on staples. The freezers pretty small so I wouldn't be out a lot of food if I lost power. I'm in an apartment so there is limited storage space.

Cloak -> RE: Full Or Bare Cupboards? (4/12/2008 2:58:26 PM)

I always keep enough food in my kitchen pantry and stock up during springtime and summer. I have peanuts, tunas, salmon, pastas, rice, sack of flour, potatoes, onions, tinned food such as beans of different sorts, lentils in sacks; so that during the snowy season I've got all I have and don't have to stress.

It is really WISE to have enough supply to feed you in difficult time! [:)]

WhiteRoseBlessings -> RE: Full Or Bare Cupboards? (4/12/2008 3:13:35 PM)

Currently, I probably have more stuff in my pantry and refrigerator than I've had in probably 20 years; and that's still not saying much.

I think if I ate nothing else except what I currently have, I would have enough for a couple weeks . . . but I would also get pretty tired of canned tomatoes and nuts.

I've just never been a big "stocker-upper".
I guess it's the minimalist in me coming out.

The only reason I have so much now is because I bought some non-perishable stuff from an online grocer recently.

As a general rule, I don't do packaged foods (canned tomatoes obviously an exception) . . . so stocking up on packaged foods isn't even a possibility with me. And perishables are not "stock-uppable." [:D]

Another current reason why I don't stock up is because it's not very feasible to do so without a car. Whatever I wheel around in the cart inside the grocery store will also eventually need to be carried by me; either from store to home or from bus stop to home.

Usually, I go to the grocery stores around 3 times a week, and get whatever food I'll need until the next time I go shopping.

Ellie-Mae -> RE: Full Or Bare Cupboards? (4/12/2008 3:16:13 PM)

I grocery shop about once a month. The only things that I usually have to get in between trips (if I plan it right) are fresh milk and fresh fruit. Around this time of year I start to stock even more for FOT in August when we have a lot of people here.

lexie -> RE: Full Or Bare Cupboards? (4/12/2008 3:20:33 PM)

I always have a weeks worth. We go shopping on Fridays when the sales start, and I plan my menu exactly for the week. We stock up on extras if they are on sale. By the next Thursday my cupboards are pretty bare.

But I also am able to do this because we have a small store in our building, and a large grocery store across the street, should we need anything.

PrincessDonna -> RE: Full Or Bare Cupboards? (4/12/2008 7:10:17 PM)

Pretty full. I stock up when nonperishables are on sale. We could definitely live a month on what we have in the house, though it would be a lot of boring stuff...it would be food! I currently even have 6 large loaves of bread in my big freezer because there was an awesome sale on my favorite kind.

WhiteRoseBlessings -> RE: Full Or Bare Cupboards? (4/12/2008 7:13:09 PM)

Hey Donna - if the 6 of y'all could live for 1 month off of what you have, then that means I could live 6 months off of y'all's food.

I have no idea why that came to me, but it did . . . and so I share it with you. [:D]

PrincessDonna -> RE: Full Or Bare Cupboards? (4/12/2008 7:28:08 PM)

LOL! Maybe more, considering Noah eats like a teenager already.[;)]

WhiteRoseBlessings -> RE: Full Or Bare Cupboards? (4/12/2008 8:13:07 PM)

OH. Make that 9 months then! [:D]

Oy. I wonder then just how much he's gonna eat when he does hit teenhood.

PrincessDonna -> RE: Full Or Bare Cupboards? (4/12/2008 8:37:51 PM)

I don't want to know. I'm living in denial and I'd like to keep it that way. There will be a point where we have 5 kids from 10 to 18.

doinkdom -> RE: Full Or Bare Cupboards? (4/12/2008 8:41:52 PM)

Oh my...we don't keep a lot in the cupboards.

We are trying to eat fresher foods, so I can't get too much at one time and I end up going to the store more often, but it's been worth it.

I keep basic pantry things, but nothing all that healthy for sure[;)].

LOL...start stocking up now!!!!!!! (btw...Jake eats a ton too....he can eat more then me, and I am PREGNANT!!! Hannah too, but she has always eaten a lot for her size...her metabolism works overtime. Emma and Jack are coming into their own...lately Jack has been getting seconds and thirds some night for dinner!!! Maybe I am not putting enough on his plate...lol)

Memaw. -> RE: Full Or Bare Cupboards? (4/13/2008 12:44:52 PM)

Oh yeah when my kids were younger, what I have in the house right now wouldn't have lasted a couple of days.[8D]

rainbowtvp -> RE: Full Or Bare Cupboards? (4/13/2008 1:43:19 PM)

I shop twice/month and keep my cupboard full. I typically have enough for about a week of "normal" meals if I miss going shopping one week- but I would be out of fresh veggies/fruit (which is why I have a small stockpile of frozen/canned). I could likely go a month+ of very basic meals and tightened portions if there were an emergency/disaster/etc.

I mostly cook from scratch- so it is a lot of staples, flour, oil, etc. that tend to last a while. When I shop, I usually buy things before I am out of them- for instance, I know I go through 5 bags of frozen veggies/week and 14 bananas, so I buy that many regardless of whether I am all out or still have a few bags in the freezer or a bunch of bananas on the counter... And if this week I only use 2 bags of frozen veggies for some reason, I still buy 5 bags next week...
