Oh, and I suppose you would have allowed Saddam to continue breaking the Cease Fire Agreement and UN resolutions for another 12 (or 20, or 40) years. How long is long enough?

but the REALITY is US is not gonna leave that oil!

Proof, please. So far the left are the only ones screaming about "It's the oil!"

40 has been about how long Israel has been ignoring U.N. Resolutions, but I suppose we shouldn't be bothered by the bigger human rights crisis there.

The real ironic part is that we have more WMD's on one carrier in region than Sadam ever had and we have used them in the past... Of course I can neither confirm of deny that being I am an ex bomb loader for the USN [8|]

ljmac has stated in other threads that those of who are opposed to this war do not want the United States to win.

So ljmac, what art the criteria for declaring victory in Iraq?

Yet those are sinners that Jesus died for because He so loved the world. That puts me in pretty good company.

djv1255 -> Pinewood Derby in Iraq (5/28/2008 11:28:31 AM)

Things are going so bad in Iraq that the Iraqi boy scouts ran a pinewood derby race. [:D]

Watch the video here.

cow451 -> RE: Pinewood Derby in Iraq (5/28/2008 11:44:49 AM)

Heard on NPR yesterday that the Iraqi soccer team may not get to participate in the World Cup or Olympics. FIFA (the sanctioning body) requires each country have a non-governmental Olympic Committee. Iraq disbanded its committee because of either corruption (in Iraq? Shocking) or members getting killed or some combination of reasons. The government is forming a new committee, but it will not be recognized by FIFA because the new committee is under a government agency. LINK

RichLP -> RE: Pinewood Derby in Iraq (5/28/2008 2:26:19 PM)

Why does Bush want so much money for the Iraqi police yet neglect the police here at home?

That would be very disappointing ....Iraqi football (and yes, it is the real football :p ) is one of few areas where Iraqi's of all political and ethnic backgrounds unite.

I don't have a caption or comment on this the article explains it all:

quote:

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- A U.S. Marine in Iraq has been removed from duty amid complaints that he was handing out coins with Bible verses at an American checkpoint, the military said Thursday.

A military spokesman said Iraqis in Falluja complained that the Marine was giving the coins, which were printed in Arabic, to people at an entry control point in Falluja.

U.S. military regulations prohibit religious proselytizing.

"This has our full attention," said Col. James L. Welsh, chief of staff of Multi-National Force, West. "We deeply value our relationship with the local citizens and share their concerns over this serious incident."

Of course, if he was a Blackwater goon opening fire on innocent civilians for no reason that would be ok.

First...we do not know, and probably will never know the CIRCUMSTANCES through which the "Blackwater" thing happened....so, in light of that....it's mere speculation (and wishful thinking by those in the U.S. media, and SOME politicians) that some so-called "goon" just simply "opened fire" on "innocent" civilians......

Such actions by American service members threaten to alienate Sunni Arabs who have become key allies in the fight against insurgents, a movement that started in Anbar province, which includes Fallujah.

Distribution of the coins in Fallujah was particularly sensitive because the city, 40 miles west of Baghdad, is known for its large number of mosques. It was the center of the Sunni-led insurgency before a massive U.S. offensive in November 2004.

Wonder what would happen if that were Muslim soldiers here in dallas....passing out Muslim coins to folks as they were walking down the street....in front of First Baptist Church of Dallas....I believe that would cause quite an uproar, as well....

We do know that based on the information they were given the Iraqi government ordered Blackwater out of the country. Since Iraq isn't a sovereign nation and merely a Protectorate or perhaps Satellite of the US at best this doesn't matter. If the evidence is good enough for the duly elected representatives of a sovereign nation to order them out it's good enough for me.

Sadly though here in America any member of a christian denomination passing out anything in front of a church of a different christian denomination is going to incite some kind of animosity. : /

rlj -> Our Iraqi Satellite Needs to Get Over It (5/31/2008 1:43:50 PM)

It seems for some reason that the people of Iraq think they are part of an independant nation now. They aren't. They are a US Satellite. Recently we had Blackwater ordered out of their country now there are protests because they don't want us there permanently:

quote:

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Some Shiite and Sunni Muslim leaders in Iraq -- able to agree on little else -- are united in their opposition to a prospective long-term security agreement between their country's government and the United States.

Many Iraqis suspect it could lead to the establishment of bases, a long-term presence of American troops, and a weakening of Iraqi government control of foreign troops.

Powerful Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr has said any such agreement should be put to a popular referendum.

Street demonstrations Friday in several Shiite Baghdad neighborhoods reflected his position.

Good to see the Sunni's and Shiites united on something.

mapachito13 -> RE: Our Iraqi Satellite Needs to Get Over It (6/4/2008 8:25:49 AM)

"In May, 504 Iraqi civilians died, the data said, compared with 969 in April."

From CNN article posted by rlj.

Looks like a Phyrric victory for the Iraqi civilians! 1473 people in two months! That was equivalent to wiping out the three small towns I visited while camping on Memorial Day weekend!

RichLP -> RE: Some real good news! (6/5/2008 11:54:11 AM)

News and developments in the Iraqi quagmire

1. A truck explosion killed 19 civilians in Baghdad; and, 3 US troops were killed.

2. Gunmen shot and killed Col. Dhafir Al-Ani of the general inspector office of the Iraqi interior ministry. This was one of a number of events of political violence in Iraq yesterday.

3. A Senate committee has reported today that George W. Bush and senior-ranking policymakers ignored doubts amongst intel services re: Iraq's WMD capabilities.

4. The British daily, The Independent, stated that details of a Bush-Maliki security agreement have been leaked. If this report is correct, Bush wants:
- 50 military bases
- control of Iraqi airspace
- legal immunity for all American soldiers and contractors

This doesn't make Iraq sovereign now, does it?

rlj -> Uppity Ignorant Iraqis (6/6/2008 1:23:48 PM)

Here they go again thinking that we actually care diddly/squat about their concerns for anything:

quote:

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraq said on Friday it would not grant U.S. troops freedom of movement for military operations in a new agreement being negotiated on extending the presence of American troops on its soil.

Deputy Prime Minister Barham Salih said the United States wanted its forces to operate without any restrictions, but this was not acceptable to Iraq.

The United States, which invaded Iraq in 2003 to oust Saddam Hussein, is negotiating an agreement with Iraq aimed at giving a legal basis for U.S. troops to stay in Iraq after December 31, when their United Nations mandate expires.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080606/ts_nm/iraq_usa_military_dc_1

I swear the nerve of some people! We free them from Saddam Hussein, destroy their infrastructure, mess up their electricity, screw up their water, can freely cover up any non-criminal killings of their people and have our contractors wantonly fire on them in downtown Baghdad when they feel like and displace 10% of their population by putting them into refugee camps in places like Syria. That isn't enough for them to just give us our way since we're going to do whatever we want to anyway? Man, you'd think there was some kind of persecution that the Iraqi christians had to flee from now that the Muslims run the country. [8|]

RichLP -> Bush administration playing hardball w/ Iraqi sovereignty (6/6/2008 1:45:09 PM)

The White House is blackmailing the Iraqi government (sorta).

In other words, if the Iraqis do not agree to letting the USA staying in Iraq as long as the USA wants to, they can't have their money back?

This is NEOCOLONIALISM and IMPERIALISM. So much for Iraqis being free under a democracy.

rlj -> RE: Some real good news! (6/12/2008 2:05:15 PM)

I'm trying to figure out how defenders of the Bush administration have been saying for years that "we knew we were getting into a long war" can still say that when before it started the administration estimated its cost at "60 billion to 100 billion"? I didn't realize the administration used ebonics math.

Anyway some good news- latest estimates on the cost of the war will be 2.7 trillion. The 10% drop must be because there are fewer American contractors.

quote:

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- As the Iraq war continues with no clear end in sight, the cost to taxpayers may balloon to $2.7 trillion by the time the conflict comes to an end, according to Congressional testimony.

In a hearing held by the Joint Economic Committee Thursday, members of Congress heard testimony about the current costs of the war and the future economic fallout from returning soldiers.

At the beginning of the conflict in 2003, the Bush administration gave Congress a cost estimate of $60 billion to $100 billion for the entirety of the war. But the battle has been dragging on much longer than most in the government expected, and costs have ballooned to nearly ten times the original estimate.

rlj -> It's not about this now that we're running things (6/20/2008 2:35:07 PM)

quote:

U.S. officials had assumed - and promised as much to Congress - that Saddam's downfall would open the way for oil companies to return to Iraq, overhaul the oil facilities and hugely increase output. Instead, insurgent attacks have bedeviled output and raised security costs by billions of dollars. And a massive smuggling operation has siphoned hundreds of thousands of barrels a day on to the black market.

It's probably a good thing that we didn't go to Iraq for oil because after the mess we have made over there they aren't pumping close to what they should. Luckily some no-bid contracts to Western Oil companies might fix this.

So remember countries around the world with oil: Dont make us mad because we make have to invade you and totally trash your economy in the process. Good to know to that with Saddam gone that illicit oil sales are now under control.
