I generally prefer male quartet. However, if you have never heard Lily Weatherford sing "What A Precious Friend Is He," you have really missed something. Actually, a good song well sung matters more that whether a man or woman is doing the singing.

I'd rather hear a quality voice, regardless of the gender of the singer or the voice part. My first choice would be, drum roll . . . . . . . . . . . , a good tenor. Give me David Phelps, Luciano Pavarotti, Marcello Giordani, Marcelo Alvarez, Placido Domingo, Jose Carreras, Jussi Bjorling, etc. any time of day. Don't get me wrong, I like a good lead and love a bass who can sing and sing low. I love a good female voice as well. Debra Talley has one of the richest, most beautiful women's voices in SG IMO. I also enjoy Linda Randle (sp?) and how low and full her sound is. Soprano voices in SG usually don't interest me much. Most, as has been mentioned, are thin and lack presence. Then you have those, like Allison Durham Speer and Sandy Patti, who sing with one sound until the range gets high enough that they shift into "opera woman." That's a pet peeve of mine, but then I'm admittedly a bit of a vocal snob. Sorry. Janet Paschal's voice was ridden hard during her time with The Nelons and she hasn't near the voice she did then. Singing at the extreme of your range constantly will do that. Those are just a few of my thoughts. Please don't crucify me, I stated that I'm a vocal snob. Did I mention that I like to hear a good tenor?

I enjoy hearing male quartets most of all when it comes down to group types, but with individual singers, I have no preference. Some of my favorite singers of all time are female and some are male.
