That's what we do. Me and hubby use our Martha Stewart, and my two year old uses his "special" plastic dishes. TIMMY'S CHINA SET. LOL!

We have some odds and ends of plastic dishes that I think we will use until Bug is about Timmy's age and then I will let him pick out some dishes of his own. We will get enough so that we can all use them sometimes so that he can help set and clear the table. I have dropped and shattered corelle on occasion so I probably won't have him handle it too much until he is 4 or 5 and a bit less likely to cut himself on the pieces (when he better understands "Stop, wait for mommy/daddy to help" etc.). When it does break it makes a nasty mess and those pieces are sharp - pretty much as bad as china or stoneware but less likely to happen. Not to mention they are a lot lighter and easier for a little guy to handle!

I've got three sets of china that I've inherited, but it's up in the attic and dh never wants to get it down for me!
For every day, we use Fiestaware. I love that stuff!

My china pattern is Noritake's Savanah.
My every day is Sango's Green Acres.
I don't know how to put those links in for you to see them.
I do know that both are no longer made, and we've gotten replacement pieces off of ebay....

I have lighthouses from Target for every day, a very pretty pattern with four differnt lighthouses and ocean scenes. I've decided that when we are down to four total sets (only one mug has chipped thus far, but no kids have handled them yet), I will put them away for when my husband and I are old  and want to remember the newly wed days.
I don't have any formal china, but I'd love to get some somday. Not in the budget now. . . I grew up using a lovely pattern that my mom got from my great uncle in England, very elegant and beautiful. I don't think I'll inherit them though, because most of them did not survive my four brothers.
