Does anyone know of a good way to kill wild onions? They've overtaken the natural area in our front yard. Last year I pulled them all, but they are back and being 8 months pregnant I'm not feeling up to pulling all of them again.

Someone told me Borax might work so I may try that. I'd rather stay away from harmful chemicals.

When I was growing up we used the wild onions as a seasoning for meats and potatoes. No idea how to kill them. Can you keep it mowed?

well, I was curious so I pulled up a bunch of different question/answer type sites on this one...and from what I have read skimming through all of them, there's really no sure fire way to get rid of them without either a) replacing all the dirt that the hidden bulbs could be lurking in....or b) using a chemical type killer (Round-Up or Bravo are the two mentioned by people over and over again). One person said something about some zodiac junk and cutting at certain times of the year, etc.....then they later said they got rid of it by cutting their grass less then a week apart in time.....but I wouldn't really go with that one...sounds kooky to me!!!! Plus I grew up in TX and we cut our grass every week (at least) and still had them in our yard.

Why would you want to kill them? If they're the same as ours, the leaves taste wonderful, the flowers taste wonderful and look great in salads, and even the bulbs can be used!! (we have them in abundance, even though we live on the edge of a town, and I love them!!)

We have them in overabundance in our area. They really stink when the lawn is mowed. [:'(] You can smell them in the breeze all over town. [:'(] I can't figure out how to get rid of them, either! But I hadn't tried eating the wild ones . . . . hubby says "I don't know, I wouldn't eat them . . ." LOL!

We used to eat the wild ones all the time, Rachel. We liked them as kids but my mom HATED our breath when we would come back in the house[:D]

AH Yes....................The yard full of onions, actually what you have is a bunch of chives. They are the little tiny onions that grow all over the yard. When you cut the grass the yard smells like an onion field.

We had this in our yard when we moved in years ago. The only way to get rid of them is to keep pulling them out. It took us a long time to really get rid of them. They were everywear. In fact I just noticed a new crop of them growning in the back of our driveway. They are good in salids by the way.

If they are in large clumps you can dig up the whole clump. Just keep pulling them out. The base of the root looks like a tiny mini onion. make sure you get the root when you pull them. If not, they just keep comming back again and again.

Chop them up in scrambled eggs. There are little country churches around here that have fundraiser dinners with that as the main course this time of year. Or at least they used to. I don't know if I've seen that in a couple of years.

The best way is to dig them up with enough soil around them to make sure you get the entire plant. One of the ways they spread is by growing new bulbs underground. Usually, when you pull them up, the new bulbs are left behind, as they separate easily from the mature bulbs that have the green tops.
