Hello all, I have been kicking around an idea for awhile and was hoping to get some opinions/ideas/suggestions.

I am considering running a countrywide contest to write a new Christmas Carol. I think if I could get enough people interested and generate enough buzz, there is a chance that the winning carol or even some others may make it into the standard Christmas carol repertoire. Maybe too lofty a goal, I dont know.

I have also considered doing the same thing for new Hymns.

Any thoughts?

Im hoping I can get many composers/musicians/lyricist/interested parties involved so there would be plenty of new songs and then there could be voting on those songs. Maybe a contest is not the best way to go... not sure. Not even sure what an appropriate prize would be. Cash? Music equipment? Music software? My heartfelt thanks... [;)]

It could all be done online. Uploading the audio and sheet music, listening to the music, the voting etc.

I know most people probably dont want to think about Christmas this early though... [:D] Might be hard to get inspired to write a carol when it's 80 degrees and sunny outside.

Maybe a new Hymn contest would be a better idea.

Hi patchymarie, so glad you like the idea!

Do you write music too? Lyrics? What is your instrument/instruments? I write music but I'm not so good at lyrics... to put it generously. [:)]

So I'll reply here: WOW! RIGHT ON! You have an absolutely beautiful voice! I love your rendition of Amazing Grace! Just fantastic.

If I do get this idea going, maybe you'd be willing to put down some vocal tracks for me... [:D]

I commissioned the writing of a new christmas choral piece about 12 years ago. "Unto Us" and it came out really great.

I have been a worship leader and congregational choir director.

However, this was for a larger community choir where I was just another bass singer.

I don't think it would have to be Christian themed carols exclusively.
