ORIGINAL: ken1906_4 There are 66 chapters in Isaiah which equals to the 66 books of the Bible. The first 39 chapters talks about Judgement which equals to the 39 books of the old testament. The last 27 chapters talks about redemption which equals to the 27 books of the new testament. Now that really is amazing!

About 2 years ago, my pastor was giving a message about the validity of God's word within the Bible and he mentioned this. I have to admit that I was floored.

OK, now that I'm semi-functional (still hard to type with my left hand), here's what I meant when I said that Joseph had ADD and was probably autistic, or at least suffered some level of Aspberger's Syndrome, a highre-functioning form of autism. When Joseph was sent by Israel/Jacob to search for his brother, he was found "wandering in a field" in the area of Shechem. There are a few issues with what has occurred here. First, the Hebrew word for "wander" is also the same word for "erring, to sin or be off the mark" (ta'ah), and the particular form here is a Qal participle which occurs in a few other places in Scripture: staggering due to intoxication (Is. 28:7), or ethically wander (Ez. 44:10; Ps. 58:4; and Pr. 14:22); the Greek in the Septuagint, unfortunately renders it as "planerow", "to wander" and it is the word from which we get "planets" (the wanderers). Since Joseph isn't indicated as to have consumed alcohol, it has to be assumed that he is "ethically wandering". Second, there is also the question as to why it seems that he needs to be put "back on track" in search of his brothers. One of the indicators of autism/ADD is the inability to keep on task and, in his case, a man, who many of the Rabbinic scholars see as the Angel of the Lord (our pre-incarnate Jesus Christ), has to put him back on track by pointing out where his brothers are. JOseph also has no reason to be physically lost here as "Joseph knew the place, for hardly more than two years ago, his family had lived there. In fact his father had bought a piece of land there on which he erected an altar monument" (Lowenthal, Genesis, p. 22). Third, and lastly with regard to his "wandering" or "erring", Joseph is in Shechem, a place where his family/tribe is not exactly warmly welcomed owing to the events of Gen. 34 and the treachery of Simeon and Levi - the tribe of Jacob/Israel is person non grata and Joseph would have been marked for death. A common habit/symptom/indication of ADD/autism is a lack of recognition of personal danger by the individual. Joseph would have known, as indicated above, that he would most likely be killed by the Shechemites if they had found him yet he went into a literal "valley of death" where his father had not sent him as Dothan, where his brothers were, is some distance away from Shechem. Even his actions with regard to Pharoah's wife (being caught alone when he would most likely get in deep-dooky) later in his story indicate a lack of personal awareness. Next, regarding a curious phrase in Gen. 37:2ff - First, he is noted to be seventeen years old and then it is reiterated that he is a young man or a youth (the Hebrew being "na'ar", a youth or young man). Why the double indicative? Especially in light of the fact that he was not the youngest of Jacob's children (if memory serves right, Benjamin was the youngest), yet he was Jacob's favorite. That he is noted as being 17 and a young man would indicate that there is something special about him which the author has to emphasize; with children who have ADD/autism, they are often treated as "different" or special within the family and thus receive special treatment - he was a young man of 17 but still a "special child". Which brings me to the next point. Second, Joseph was given not a "coat of many colors" by Jacob/Israel, as is so often translated, but was given a coat which was oversized, reaching to past the flat of his palms and the flat of his feet. That the coat was oversized is also another indication of ADD/autism as one of the therapies for children who have this affliction - the weight, bulk and pressure relaxes a child and causes them not to have outbursts or exhibitive behaviors. Which brings me to the final point about Joseph. Joseph, in Gen. 37:5-11, speaks in a manner that is not only untoward but almost disrespectful to his brothers and father. Yes, they are dreams but the manner in which he phrases the dreams shows he has very little, if any, consideration for either consequences or social mores in the family or tribe - he essentially "blurts out" what he thinks. This is also another indication of ADD/autism as individuals often say or do things that many folks find rude or socially unacceptable. All of these, when considered together, would seem to indicate ADD/autism (Aspberger's). And, no, I am neither denigrating Joseph (his actions later in Genesis show that he is almost classically Aspberger's, as he functions well within his environment and makes decisions which are sound and just and his interactions with others show a strong development in his behaviors). Instead, I am just showing that God uses individuals who are flawed (which is shown throughout Scripture, e.g., Peter and Moses) to fulfill His will. Also, the reason this whole issue came to light is that following a discussion with two Pentateuch professors (one a doctorate, the other soon to be) and my own personal interaction with my son who has Aspberger's, it was noticed that Joseph's story had many of the "markers" that classic ADD/autism (Aspberger's) exhibit. So, that being lenghtily said, that's my story and I'm stickin' to it...

Uhhh...the OT speaks of Redemption and the NT speaks of Judgement, too. Within the first three chapters of Genesis, God speaks of redemption (3:15). And Matt. 25:31-46 definitely speaks of judgement...

I always thought that there was only one part of the Spritual Armor (Ephesians 6:14-18) which was offensive to the enemy, i.e. the Sword of the Spirit but aparently there are 2: 1 The Sword of the Spirit (i.e. the Word of God) and 2 The Sandals of Peace (see Armor of God)
