humbleinspirit -> Is Being Slow A Sin? (4/18/2008 11:35:41 PM)

I ask this question half-jokingly, because all my life, I have been told (at work) maybe other places that I take too long to complete tasks or do not work fast enough. My thinking is this is just how I am wired. I never really "got it" when in school and always needed extra attention. So I guess my question is do I need to speed up or do I just accept how God made me and find continue to cope with my handicap and eventually find a job that isn't so "production" based instead?

LaurainAL -> RE: Is Being Slow A Sin? (4/18/2008 11:44:23 PM)

I think we should always strive to do our best. Are you doing that?

What kind of job do you have?

humbleinspirit -> RE: Is Being Slow A Sin? (4/18/2008 11:46:05 PM)

Yes, I do strive to my best, I work in the copying/printing field.

Kat_D -> RE: Is Being Slow A Sin? (4/18/2008 11:59:42 PM)

I like you just the way you are, Mike!!![sm=thumbsup.gif]

...and no, it's not a sin to be slow. Your just meticulous, that's all!

humbleinspirit -> RE: Is Being Slow A Sin? (4/19/2008 12:21:01 AM)

Thanks Kat, I am meticulous, I know, but it just seems that the whole world moves at a faster pace than what I am used to.

brothertodd -> RE: Is Being Slow A Sin? (4/19/2008 2:17:51 AM)

many people believe there not qualified to do the Lords work. Through out scripture God has used a qualified person (as in being educated background) was Paul, He was a pharasee, He knew the bible. However he wasnt the best talker and got alot of his points across in letters.
Thee is even one more famous, he was considered slow in speach, a stutterer, and God used him in a mighty way His name was Moses and look what he did. Just have a heart for Jesus and be humble

humbleinspirit -> RE: Is Being Slow A Sin? (4/19/2008 2:28:44 AM)

So I just need to find my calling then? I am intelligent, I do know this, however I am just slow at learning things and catching on. And in the work that I do, things are expected to be done quickly, and correctly, and thinking on your feet as well.

SonInMe1 -> RE: Is Being Slow A Sin? (4/19/2008 8:25:49 AM)

I am kinda on the other end of that spectrum.

It hasta be done, it hasta be done now and if I could do it sooner, I would.

Waiting is straight from the bowels of hell.

I can't afford a howitzer but....wow would I want one on my car.

God created the slow people so the rest of us can learn some patience...and its a tough row to hoe.

Me, too, Mike. We just have the misfortune of living in the most rushed part of the US. If we were to move down south we'd be the ones moving and talking too fast.

Ain't that the truth. I was in a store WAY down south a week or so back. People were standing in line at the cashier, and noone was throwing a hissy fit because there were more than three folks in the lines.

Perhaps what we see as slow catching on is that they have a differant learning style. Some folks are visual learners, some audio, some learn by doing. Those who learn by doing take longer, simply because doing something takes longer than being told how to do it.

Random -> RE: Is Being Slow A Sin? (4/19/2008 9:46:49 AM)

It's fine to be slow, as long as I'm not behind you at the time.

Kat_D -> RE: Is Being Slow A Sin? (4/19/2008 10:34:30 AM)

Personally, I don't believe we were designed by God to live at the pace we are forced into in this day and age. That's why I think so many people suffer from severe depression, anxiety and panic attacks...they just weren't built to go at such an accelerated speed and sometimes they simply breakdown as a result.

A car can go 100 mph, but if you drove it at that speed every day for hours a day, it would fall apart, wouldn't it?

Mike, think of it this way: Your slow pace is exactly right, it's the rest of the world that's off!!!

Prairiehiker -> RE: Is Being Slow A Sin? (4/19/2008 11:45:43 AM)

My daughter's teacher complains about my daughter being slow. She is a perfectionist and won't turn in any work that she doesn't feel is perfect so she takes her time. She is always last to leave the classroom because she wants her desk neat and orderly. She is very smart and can grasp concept that are beyond her years. She's also very athletic. It's just she moves slow when it come to completing projects. (and she has problems with daydreaming, lol)

Yeah, I noticed that when I visited Denver and almost knocked everyone at the airport over with my "slow" pace!

Except that being slow could cost me a job! [:o]

WoW, thanks everyone for your postings so far! Maybe I am not all that strange afterall!

HisLamb26 -> RE: Is Being Slow A Sin? (4/19/2008 2:05:37 PM)

Mike,
I think also you might find the "speedy" thing to be a bit Regional. Take a trip down South....It's a whole 'nuther pace. My cousins from Boston and my cousins from Oklahoma are like night and day-and this is one of those areas. Even speech patterns are slower and more drawn out in comparison. Folks seems to be in a lot less hurry down south.

Perhaps if you moved forther South, you would find the pace would fit you just fine.

(But then-you'd miss cleaning all that seagull doo off your car.)

[:D]

If you're not able to keep up with crazy production schedules, then you might switch into another area of printing that does suit your skills, or try something different altogether. The copying/printing field is without a doubt fast paced, especially if you work at one of the 'rush it out the door' chain copy stores. That unfortunately just goes with the territory.

If you have a real talent for print and are a meticulous person and a perfectionist [hence making you a little slower], there are printers around who concentrate on higher end jobs and appreciate quality over quantity. That might be the place for you!

For the future, when you interview at various places pay close attention to what they put the emphasis on most. If they put a strong emphasis on insanely quick turnaround and none on artistic integrity, design, and high quality production values ... I would pass.

Bill, I think that would depend on whether you moved to a city or a town. PF seems to be quite frenetic. I think a lot of it has to do with population; the more people, the busier some place is.

Although, considering where both of y'all live, I can imagine almost anywhere would seem to be on a slower track for y'all. [:D]

I very much agree with this.

A fault in one field of work is an asset in another. I'm inclined to think that your careful methodical approach is just right for some jobs!

I'm wondering--do you really consider this trait of yours to be a handicap? Maybe it isn't.

But Atlanta doesn't count. It is south but it isn't slow. Instead of cleaning seagull dung off of the car, clean all the yellow pine pollen off. And then when you park under the trees for shade, it's thrasher doo. (hmm, who knew this post would take this direction)

SonInMe1 -> RE: Is Being Slow A Sin? (4/19/2008 8:31:33 PM)

I was born in northern New York. The first time I was in the "south", North Carolina, the people did work much slower...but I found out the reason why.

It....is...so...much...hotter...there. You can't go outside in the noon heat and work fast.

I work in printing, we make tickets. It is a fast paced and quality enviroment. Slow, can't be tolerated and neither can poor quality.

Not every job is for every person.

humbleinspirit -> RE: Is Being Slow A Sin? (4/19/2008 8:51:58 PM)

I just had a complete posting ready and my computer just swallowed it! Anyway, maybe I should move South but I don't know. It seems no matter what job I have, I am considered slow. I have even been sited at how "slow" I walk in the past and its been a bone of contention with one of my bosses!

At one time in the past I was doing fine with walking, but I walked insanely fast! I do not, and in fact refuse to walk at that pace anymore!

Maybe what I have is not a handicap and God is just using this so that I can be "pushed" to get the education to work in another field instead. Also, on a side note, I look around and it seems that people put in well over 50 hours a week in my area, I think that is insane as well!

Thanks Kat, I am meticulous, I know, but it just seems that the whole world moves at a faster pace than what I am used to.

Thank you Sharon-Marie!
