We've been seriously considering changing the curriculum that we use for our last daughter, to Bob Jones, especially the distance learning curriculum. I spoke at length today with a representative with Bob Jones at our convention. He made a passing comment which really has me thinking. He asked me how many children we were going to be putting through the curriculum, and I said just 1. He said that is almost not worth it.

So, what I want to know is this, is it better to use Bob Jones distance learning (with satellite TV, equipment, etc) if you've got more than one student working with it, or what? I need to know ASAP, because of the discounts we can get through the convention, which ends tomorrow (Saturday) at noon.

Why would be "almost not worth it?" Is it is the cost? If it's worth it to you, then it doesn't matter if you have other students coming up after her. You do what is best for your daughter. What is the Lord speaking to your heart?

One of their main selling points is being able to use it over and over again.

I have five kids and really love it. If you can afford it, I think it is a wonderful program and worth it if ou have the money for it.

I might use the hard drive though that comes with the classes and all the materials for one grade level. I would use it if I had just one child because it would save on a lot of time.

I don't know why the sales rep said that, he didn't explain. I am considering going back today to ask him what he meant by that.

Concernng what the Lord is speaking to me on this issue - nothing. Neither for nor against. Thus the reason why I'm asking for feedback.

The sales rep did mention the external hard drive. He said that it was a huge success, but I got the feeling it was only for 1 grade (3rd grade or something like that). We need it for a sophomore or junior in high school level.

Is it between this program and something else or is this the only program that you are considering? If this is the only program that you are considering, after having looked at others and found this to meet the needs that you have and you can afford it, I think you should go for it and forget what the saleman said.

I'm looking at the catalog.

The external hard drive is for K4-8 only. The DVD distance learning courses include all subjects for K4-6, and can only be bought by individual subject for 7-12. It is my understanding that the cost of both programs include all textbooks and teacher's manuals needed. The nonconsumables are leased to you, so they must be returned at the end of the year.

ETA...duh...I just noticed that your child is in high school. Each subject can be purchased (leased, really) on DVD for $399, OR as a complete grade package for $999, which includes teacher and student materials. It would totally be worth it to me.

If my oldest child comes home for school again (in Christian school now), we will be doing the DVD program because it is more cost effective for 1 child than the satellite subscription would be.

Hi! I hope this reply gets to you in time, and is helpful. I have been a educational consultant at the BJU Press booths at conventions across the country, so maybe I can help answer some questions. I think what the rep. meant is that the sateliite subscription with the monthly fee is probably not worth the cost vs. the DVD package. With the satellite subscription. you pay a monthly fee (last year it was around $40 a month) plus the cost of books - although you get a discount on your books. When you add up the monthly fee plus the cost of books, it is almost as much as the DVD package, and with the DVD package you have the convenience of the classes all ready for you, as well as EVERYTHING you need for you class; books and tests included. You pay one price and get everything you need. And, as you know, if you order at the convention, you receive free shipping. However, every rep. holds "hotel" meetings where you will also get free shipping. If you can't go to one of those; just call them and tell them that you met them at a convention and ask how they can get you free shipping.

If you have more than once children, you are paying the same monthly fee for the classes, no matter whether you tape 1 a day, or 10 a day. That's why with multiple children, it makes more financial sense to have the subscription and tape the classes. With the DVD's, you pay for the convenience of them being ready when you want them. As a home-school mom, I definately prefer the convenience of having the DVD's.

Keep in mind that while you order a specific grade, you can pick and choose certain electives; such as math and a language. That is one of the reasons that high school is not available on the hard drive.

If you have any other questions, I will be glad to help. I just realized that it is Saturday, and not Friday, so I am sure your convention is over. SORRY!!!!!

PS - If it is not too much trouble, could you please let me know what convention you were at? Thanks!
