I've been IN love and am IN love. Only it's kind of complicated. It's not the deep "love of my life" kind of love, but the emotional love.
My exbf used my affection for him to totally wreck me. Long story short, there.
My best friend used my pain to totally restore me. I'm "in love" with him and have told him so. We discussed it and decided that right now neither of us are really ready OR looking for a relationship. I'm taking that "love energy" and channeling it elsewhere in our friendship. It's awesome.

Over the years, I've thought I was in love. But looking back now, I can honestly say that it wasn't real love. It was a selfish, shallow, "me me me" emotion. Yes, I cared about the person, but I think I cared more about how that person made me feel than about the person himself. And that's not what love is all about.

You've made an excellent point, Rae.
If a relationship is all about what they can do for you and not about what you can do for them NOT expecting anything else in return, you're probably headed down the wrong path. Because when they don't fulfill your expectations, you become bitter and hateful to them, and blame the failing relationship on their "insensitivity" when really it's your own. Love is about give and take-- and it should always be about mutual sacrifice.
For another point, sometimes your idea of showing someone love is not their idea of it. I show my friends and family I love them by telling them so, hugging them, and just plain goofing off with them. Others show it by constantly sacrificing their time and self to be there when they're needed, and sometimes when they're not. And they might never say i love you or give you a hug. But just because they don't doesn't mean they don't care. They just have a more personal way of expressing it.

I have been in love once...(and yes, it was that love of my life/sacrificaial love too)
But oh well. Probably will never happen again, but who knows.
