I haven't gotten to purchase it yet, but it's definitely high on my list of projects I'd most like to get this year.

I have it. Its really good. The stage is really pretty! I havent watched the whole thing yet, just bits and pieces, but from what I've seen its really good.

I have not seen it yet. Was Vestal's song the only song pulled from the archives?

Yes, they took Vestal singing "Rock Of Ages" from the "Down By the Tabernacle" Homecoming video.

I thoroughly enjoyed it as I did the other 2 hymns projects Gaither has done. It is a very good project.

Are any artists on there besides the regular Gaither crew? If so, which ones?

Jimmy Blackwood's Blackwood Brothers sing "More About Jesus". I paid attention to them because their tenor, Wayne Little, was the lead singer in a group with my dad for about 15 years.

I've watched bits and pieces of it.

There's a terrific clip of Gloria Gaither talking about the importance of sound theology in songwriting in the Bonus section, ending with her quoting the extended metaphor that makes up the last verse of "The Love Of God." I wish that had been included in the main footage of the program in place of the interview clip. The clip of her addressing the singers rather than talking in a sound studio with Bill has a MUCH greater impact.

Fascinating!

If you have the chance, Brandon, be sure to check them out in a live concert some time. Their bass (Randy Byrd) is one of the best melodic basses out there today. He doesn't often go below low B-flat (which is low enough), but his tone in the range he does sing is one of the best I've heard.

Brad White is also amazing on the piano.

(By the way, Randy Byrd sounds nice on "More About Jesus," but I don't think the selection fully does his voice justice--a quartet song like "I Get Happy" is a better showcase for his voice.)

Daniel, I'd consider going to a Blackwood Brothers' concert, but they are never around here. They always seem to be out west, in the mid-west, or down in Florida.

Randy did sound very nice on his verse during "More About Jesus". I'd like to hear him on more stuff.

I have a hard time adjusting to Wayne as a tenor. As a lead, I think he could have been one of the best on the road. As a tenor, I'm not sold. That probably has more to do with what I'm used to hearing him sing than how he actually sounds. He has a self-titled solo project that is more inspirational/contemporary than SG, but it is out of this world.

I don't have the DVD, but I saw the special on TV. The Florida Boys (Reed, Garner, Allred, and McDonald) sing "Stand By Me" acappella and nail it, the Blackwood Brothers tune is very good, and the Collingswoth Family does a masterful job on an acappella "May The Good Lord Bless And Keep You". To me, those were the highlights of what I saw on TV. Looks like a pretty good video.

danielmount -> RE: New Gaither Homecoming DVD: Rock of Ages (4/25/2008 3:45:54 PM)

I've heard the solo project. That does seem to fit his range better.

I like the Blackwood Brothers (today's version) mainly because of Randy's and Jimmy's vocals--that and Brad's piano playing, when he does play piano.

Daniel..... something tells me you weren't all that impressed. Or am I reading too much into it? [;)]

I'll probably buy the Rock of Ages DVD for me son. He loves the Homecoming videos!

You might be. You might not be.[;)]

Actually, this is kind of the 5th Hymns Gaither Homecoming video. The first were called "Hymns", and "Church In the Wildwood", those 2 were where everybody was dressed in clothing from the early days, 1800's?.

Then , there was "How Great Thou Art", and "Amazing Grace" videos,

Now, we have "Rock Of Ages".

I liked the 1st two the best actually. Those were taped at the Billy Graham headquarters., and they still had many of the old timers on them.

LOL It may be a little over produced and doctored, but in all honestly, it is probably my favorite solo project that I've heard (OK, I will admit I can probably count the number of solo projects I've heard on one hand, but that's beside the point).

Kerrlaw1 -> RE: New Gaither Homecoming DVD: Rock of Ages (4/25/2008 11:07:02 PM)

I always stock up at Family Fest, just a month away.

Deep Discount has it for $13.52 with free shipping if anyone's looking to buy a copy. I've ordered several from them before and they're a reputable company.

Rock of Ages was featured on a recent Gaither Homecoming Hour on tv recently, and I saw it. I do not own the dvd. I liked what I saw on tv. If I remember right, the Martins had a very good song on it, as did the Jimmy Blackwood quartet.
