yeah Rita really was hard on the place where my mom lives...that's where it hit hardest (in fact we even saw the name of her little bitty town on the news over and over again....they kept talking about the whole area she lives in but that the worst was her town, so bad that they couldn't get in to even find out what kind of damage there was for over a week). Wal-Mart opened back up after six months finally....for a few months they would only let a certain number of people in at a time and they had to be escorted and could only get a certain number of items. Water and canned goods were extremely hard to find anywhere. My mom didn't have much stocked up, and lost everything in the freezer/refrigerator (at least she was smart enough to empty it before she left town though....most people didn't and that was insane too!!!). After we moved back to the states (we were in Germany when Rita hit) and relocated to OK my mom said we are now her hurricane safe spot if that ever happens again./...we are far enough away that she would be safe from the storm, yet close enough that hopefully she could get here. It might take a while, but she could get here.

I agree...especially if you live in areas that you could be hit with storms and such...it really is prudent to have a supply of some kind available.

THANK YOU for that. That very exact same thing popped into my head early this morning as I was thinking of this post. I think we, as a whole, tend to think that God's miraculous provision will always appear as manna from heaven, but he provides as he sees fit. Who's to say that urging his people to pay attention to things around them and be prepared isn't his way of providing? I can for sure tell you that without the grocery/household goods stockpile I have stored up, we'd never have been able to make it these past few months with 20% of our bring-home income going into the gas pump. But, we've survived it, and I thank God for giving me the wisdom and knowledge to shop the way I do.

So this thread is kind of freaking me out now. Honestly, do you think that we are headed to a food shortage in the United States? I am feeling this overwhelming need to buy a ton of food and stockpile just in case.

Chelle, I don't know that I'd say I'm afraid we're heading to a food shortage but I do think things are going to get leaner all around before they get better. If I have a good stockpile of food/supplies built up, I can cut our weekly grocery budget way back if I have to, leaving more money to put toward other bills. That's just my way of looking at it.

No, I'm not stockpiling, I wasn't aware that there are rumors of a possible shortage. Probably because the only media we have in our home is the computer.
We have a large garden, a cow and several goats and chickens so we should be OK if anything were to happen. But I'm doubtful anything will.

I'm building stockpiles of selected items, mostly as a hedge against rising prices than shortages. I expect any shortages to be short-term. Living in Alaska, transportation costs are hitting hard in the price for just about anything.

I really doubt there will be a true food shortage here. The one problem I think we will see is some families struggling to make ends meet and that we as Christians do need to be prepared to minister to those who may fall through the cracks. I have worked with Second Harvest and there are families who make too much and don't qualify for help even though they have legitimate bills to pay. Those are the families I am concerned about.
IMO this is all politically and media driven. There are agenda's being pushed here.

Orange is only a few minutes from me. It was bad. Three of my neighbors lost their homes. Two of them had at least two huge trees on them and the other one had roof failure from the winds. My home had minimal damage.
that's good that your house had minimal damage. I know many there that had extensive damage and had to start over or move. KOGT Radio put out a book of the pics of Orange and the blog that the guys kept about it, and we got it....it is surreal looking at those kinds of pics.
We aren't stockpiling for the sake of stockpiling....however, we are trying to get back to more basic things...like making things from scratch more. It really has to do with where we are in life though and not really about the economy. I just like making things from scratch. I would make a ton more if we had room for a larger freezer!!! One of our kids is allergic to corn syrup, so I already make many things from scratch anyway so that we don't have to deal with that (which is in sooooo much these days!!!). Mostly though the reason is just because we can right now.

If there's any shortage, it's going to be because everyone tries to stockpile food. It's going to feed off itself. The more people are stockpiling, the more the media will report on the crisis, and the more people will start stockpiling. The demand will cause the prices to go up, which will cause even more panic and even more people to stockpile. Kind of like a run on the bank.

I would have to say that this stockpiling thing because of food shortages is very much driven by the media. However, rising food prices is something we need to be aware of. We can't find bread for under $2 here now. There will be a lot of people (myself included) who will need to be more creative with their grocery budgets, cutting out luxury food purchases and sticking to the basics.

btw--I don't have a problem with "stocking up" in order to save money. It's the starvation-panic that's bugging me.
Every month one of our stores does a truckload sale of frozen veggies for .99c/bag, and I get about 35 bags (a months worth) so I'm not stuck paying $2/bag mid-month.

I said to Dh the other day, and it was really sad to say, but I was saying that we shouldn't really have to worry about food shortages. We live in North America, one of the places of the world where most people will still be able to afford food if the prices go up or if there is a shortage. So won't the people and companies who produce food send their products here before they send it elsewhere in the world?
Food shortages around the world, and locally at our food banks, is something we should be concerned about, but I don't see it happening at our local grocery stores.

I keep an extra stock of food but not out of fear but out of being prepared. I live in an area that has been hit hard by ice storms in the winter, floods in spring and fall then during the rest of the year ~ tornadoes. We live in an area that is rather protected from tornadoes but we could easily have power out for days or as we learned during the 07 ice storm~ weeks. Roads may be impassible or our cars may be destroyed. We have a gas stove for cooking and we are blessed enough to live downhill from the water tank so we will have water. After the 07 ice storm we were one of the few in town who had water. Anything at any moment can turn our lives upside down and it is best to keep in mind that if there is any kind of disaster or shortage we all need to be preparted to be on our own for a time.

I'm less worried about myself (although this discussion has made me get a few things on my local food To-Do list done) than I am about the food shortages I'm reading about in Africa. We should really be in prayer for them (and finding some concrete things we can do to help).

Exactly. God gave us brains, and He expects us to use them. If we refuse to do that, God is not necessarily going to bail us out. He will usually let us suffer the consequences of our actions.
Being prepared is not the same thing as panicking.

Being prepared is one thing - but going overboard and buying up large amounts of food that could likely go to waste should no major shortage occur is silly and wasteful in my opinion. I'm not going to go and buy up a 50 pound bag of rice or flour - just so I'll have it - especially when it could spoil or get buggy due to lack of appropriate storage space.

Living in Florida this is the time of year that stocking up on can goods, bottled water, batteries and even paper products is a good idea. I'm getting to where I buy an extra case of water, or a few extra can goods at the store because even though we are in the north part of the state, we are affected by the hurricanes. When Hurricane Ivan hit the VERY tall palm tree in my parents yard fell down. Praise God it went forward into the yard and not backwards into my room! *grin* But we did lose power during most of the hurricane's in 2005 so watching food for a few days can be a problem.
I'm not stocking up in fear of food shortage though. Even though our recession will get worse before it gets better, I don't think America will suffer too hard. We just may have to budget a little more wisely (something I'm very guilty of not doing).

LOL...I do similar things but this makes me laugh because it reminds me of my MIL. She has the same idea about things...but goes waaaay overboard sometimes.
When her house was being redone, we cleaned out the closets and found four bottles of vegetable oil. My brother in law remembered going to the store with her when it was on sale.....5 years ago. They also found soap that she remembered buying 10 years earlier! I'm sure there has been similar sales since then.

Preparing isn't the same as stockpiling and hoarding either. It could be simply reevaluating how you shop, cook and eat. One reason I prepare early for hurricane season is I hate the panic shoppers who wait until the last minute. It's a frenzied crowd thing for me.
