Yesterday I managed to get someone out of jail who had not paid any child support since 2004. Just doing my part to make the justice system great. How could they pay child support while in jail. Isn't that like the old debtors prison? The person should be required to pay, but they have to have a job first. Not paying child support is contempt of court, and the person in contempt can be jailed for it. They are usually not pursued until they are way behind, usually thousands of dollars. The purpose is to force compliance. The non-payor can "purge" their contempt by paying a purge payment set by the judge. Gary, the most common thing I hear is: "I can't pay support if I'm in jail." This usually comes from someone who has worked steadily, but never paid, so it doesn't carry much weight with judges. Interestingly, despite the talk about "deadbeat dads", female non-custodial parents are 20% more likely to not pay than males.

In this area it is more like 25 percent of the females that do not pay. When they land in jail the first thing I hear is "I don't have any money to pay with" but they are dressed for a fashion parade by the looks. The judges just look at them, tells them to pay the money then, and only then, they can get out of jail. It surprises my how most of the time they can find the money to pay with when their story & tears did not work.

I hate to leave since I have barely caught up with this thread and have virtually ignored the rest of SG, not to mention my friends in PFY. However (you will love this cranky) Cindy and I have dentist appointments at 7:00 a.m. tomorrow. They like it when we come because we sit in adjoining cubicles while getting our teeth cleaned and carry on a comedy routine for the whole staff. Unfortunately, the hygienist who has been cleaning my teeth for fifteen years has moved away, so I will be breaking in a new one.

Can't the court attach the wages?. I work with a lady whose ex has worked off the grid for years to avoid paying. I can see jailing someone to send a message, but how does the system balance sending a message and collecting the money? As Ms. Giz said, it is amazing how people can come up with some money if it will get them out of jail. Yes, they do wage assignments. BTW, jail is generally ordered only after a non-payor has been given repeated chances to comply. Gary, did you see my bagpipe joke earlier?

My dad didn't pay child support until he was forced to.

My mouth is small, so they use one on me too. Is there a thingymajigger that you can put on a person to keep their mouth SHUT????? I'd like to find one of those......
