Quaid! There is alot of good baritones in our area, I can think of quite a few!

Well, my two absolute favorite singers in the world are already mentioned -- Scoot Shelnut and Eric Dove... I agree with most mentioned here, and definitely agree that Melton Campbell is deserving of mention, and agree that he doesn't get the recognition he deserves. But then, neither do the two I mentioned before... While I'm at it, another honorable mention is Lance Jeffrey, who is currently filling in the baritone position with the Anchormen. He has a beautiful, smooth baritone voice.

I heard 3 great groups with 4 great baritones this weekend.
Chris Little, formerly of the Prophets (now New Prophets) , Mystery Men, and now with the Dan Keeton Quartet.
Imagine a voice with the tone simillar to Rodney Griffith, but with pronounciation like Gerald Wolfe.
He is superb! The Dan Keeton Quartet's live project is worth the price just to hear Chris sing "It's Almost Over".

Levi Johnson, Chris's sucessor as baritone with Prophets is just as good. But now Levi is the bass, and Eddie Withrow does a fine job in the baritone slot.
That group has a history of getting solid baritones.

Also must mention Josh Copenhaver. (baritone for the Creston, Ohio family trio The Copenhavers)
He is just 19 and he's improving every time I hear them.
I'm telling you, watch these guys and their respective groups.... they will be in the spotlight someday.

We also have a history of baritone turnover. :D

I would have to agree with the apparent status quo here: Mark Trammell is a great baritone.

I was watching some of the old Statesmen videos on YouTube--Doy Ott had that smooth, blending baritone sound.

Our baritone explained the baritone part like this: If the lead is the dirt and the tenor is the water, then the baritone is the blend that makes them combine together to make mud. I'm still not sure about analogizing singing with mud, but there you go.

Derrick Selph sounds great on "I Believe God." Many of the songs BF&A sing have complicated baritone harmonies, and he nails them. I'm sure he could sing lead though as many of BF&A's songs hit high points with those outer-space high tenor notes. [:D]


Scott Inman is another fantastic baritone. Mark Trammell is a legend, and Rick Fair has one of the richest baritone voices I've heard.

Here's one that I haven't seen mentioned, and you may not want to, but go back to the late 60's recordings of the Oak Ridge Boys when Bill Golden had solo's and also as he blended with moving baritone harmonies. This man is an outstanding talent, A GREAT BARITONE and still sings very well today.

But I agree too, Mark Trammell "rocks" out some great baritone!

I was amazed this past weekend when I sat 20' away (so I can tell you it wasn't stacks)
from the Master Mark Trammell when he sang Aflat on How Great Thou Art!

In the 1960's when The LeFevre men would sing as a quartet, Jimmy Jones would sing baritone. If you have never listened to any of those recordings you should. I got a few and I am sure that Chaz does also.

Yep, Bill Golden was one of my favorite baritones back in the "good ole days"!
Probably is still one of the best, but I just don't get to hear him that much these days. I always loved the OAKS!

Yep, I've pretty much got a complete LeFevres library-- thanks to ebay! Jimmie was a great man, and could sing a solid bari line.

After he left the LeFevres, he started a fine group with Charles Key, Johnny Peace (Tony's Dad), Kathryn Day and Sandy Eller. It was called "The Good News Singers". Eventually, Jimmie left the group, and Tony (an awesome baritone, himself) became the owner of TGNS. He kept it going until he joined the Wilburns in '93. A few years later, Jimmie started up a male group called "The Heralds". They sang until Jimmie died in '06.

Had the privelidge to hear Mark Trammell's son, Nick, singing with the Perrys and thought he done very well.

To myself, Doy Ott and R.W.Blackwood set the standard for all baritone singers. Awesome voices and amazing range.

Marshall Hall he is really good! I love to hear the low tones of his voice. Scott Howard is good as well. You have to be able to hear harmony well, to sing that part well. It sure is easy to notice the Baritones who should be singing lead, because they struggle with the harmony line. The best hear the harmony and sing in with confidence, not memorize it and sound like a ro-bot.


I have to say that I agree with NEWNAMEGIRL when it comes to Marshall Hall. There are very few other singers with his tambre that can hang in there as far as stylistic range and accuracy.

Nick really sounds like his Dad on some songs, especially All Is Well and Second Opinion, off of Look No Further.

There are so many I could name but one of my favorites is Wayne Maynard. He voice is rich and powerful.
