Randy, denominations might be dividing the church, but it's not as much the name as the doctrine that's doing the dividing, eh?

It's what the denominations represent. Which a lot of them, sadly, represent hypocrisy. Yet, they don't even realize it.

it's very true
but who are they?
i once heard Kate say "christianity doesn't need another hypocrite"
she was acknowledging her background but being "true" to her present convictions, she lives a nonbeliever's life

Yeah I get'cha. But having division because of doctrine is okay, as long as people aren't being horrid and judgemental. And I don't think hypocrisy is only from a couple denominations, I think it can be in all of them! We are fallible people. If there were no denominational guidelines, there would be mixture, and then there's a good chance that we'd all turn lukewarm. And from what God has said on the matter, lukewarmess is a very scary thing.

i only dislike denominations when they put too weight on their traditions over sound biblical teaching
people, let's follow common sense, faith is not an irrational process

Yeah, tradition really can kill moves of the Holy Spirit. We all must be open to go where ever the Spirit leads, even if it's not going to be "the norm". I really really like the term "full gospel". It doesn't bring up all that negative stuff, just focuses on the Word!

Talking about it will only serve as educating each other about them, IF we don't argue about it.... but it will not change them... nor will it eliminate them.

i once got into a debate with a heavy pentecostal about his doctrine. He sought after my friendship and wanted advice, but I swear his believes got in the way of fixing his issues. I think not only had it instilled in him a lot of man made things that are unnecessary, but it made him arrogant and stubborn. Which ultimately did not help him in the end of fixing his problems.

What kind of beliefs did he have that got in the way? Not trying to start a debate, I'm truly curious!

Here's something I read today:

That should be true. Leonard Ravenhill said something like 'in Acts, they didn't call for the doctors, they called for prayer'

well, he's in that same group who believe all those do's and don'ts and that you aren't saved if you don't speak in tongues.

I can't disclose what his issues were exactly.... but in the end all he did was argue with me about how his church's doctrine is the only correct doctrine and after that he wouldn't listen to me on anything. And we never got to the bottom of solving his problem.

And i just wonder how can anyone filled with the Holy Spirit be as stubborn, close minded, and hateful as that?

As purely a mater of semantics, is it possible to not speak in tongues?
Tongues:
"5. the faculty or power of speech: a sight no tongue can describe.
6. speech or talk, esp. mere glib or empty talk.
7. manner or character of speech: a flattering tongue.
8. the language of a particular people, region, or nation: the Hebrew tongue.
9. a dialect."

I know what he means, but if you want to be literalistic, you could simply reply that you too speak in tongues.

funny i remember i made a thread like this like.. 2.5 years ago or something hahaha.

quote:

i only dislike denominations when they put too weight on their traditions over sound biblical teaching

then you would love greece 97% of greek orthodox christians and its ALL tradition. and i do mean ALL. or ok 99% whatever.

as for the last 3%, ive no idea what it is and who cares.

though about half that claim greek orthodox mostly do it to prevent having to do extra stuff for things they want(example when you enroll in the military which is mandatory for males over 18 and out of college, if you dont declare greek orthodox they bug you with a whole other proceedure)

Okay, but you understand that this is totally on a church-by-church basis, right? That's a very... extreme thing to do. My pastor would never ever say that. He believes that God not only can heal people by a supernatural miracle, but also uses physicians and modern medicine. After all, that knowledge is from God, right?

Ash, that's another example of extreme Pentecostals. *shakes head* It's rather frustrating. There are the Pentecostal churches who have immorality and other awful things going on (homosexuals in the pulpit!) and they do nothing about it. And then there are the Assemblies of God churches and other ones, which have so many rules and regulations and things.... our church was neither one nor the other, we're not in the Pentecostal Assembly, we aren't in Assemblies of God.

Why are we talking about Pentecostals and not even other "denominations"? That might have happened Rae..but that is not true of all churches. Don't judge us all based on what you might hear or see.

Laken, I think you missed something. I am Pentecostal. I am not judging, just trying to make people see that there are many many different kinds of Pentecostals. My BFF was AOG before she started going to my church, and she's the sweetest most wonderful person I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. Her church was just a lot more strict that mine! She wears skirts all the time and doesn't wear makeup(wait, neither do I!), but it really doesn't matter to me. It's just different from what I grew up with in my church.

Everyone needs to look up all the denominations on wikipedia before they start arguing about it.

I actually don't care about denominations. It's not an interesting topic for me. If we really wanted to pick on people, lets go to the Catholics, the Anglicans, etc..... weird ones no body talks about.

better yet, the Mormons and Jehovah whitenesses. Any other cults. Those would be interesting to talk about....but little divisions in the 'Christian community' are boring, and all it does is cause arguments.

My opinion is, I'm going to live my life they way God directs me to, and I don't need someone else's interpretations to let me know what He wants for me when it's clearly in the Bible and I have a relationship with him. If everybody could come together as simple Christ followers and leave their added on junk out of it, that would be a group I'd be a part of.

really?
i saw you guys talking about drums in church in another thread but that is all about denominations
it doesn't have to be a boring topic or argumentative dispute ..
if you want to have an interesting conversation then check this out

or you can "witness" [to] this individual
Steven aka Dash-Dot-Dash is so intelligently idiotic he's not sure if his wisdom is truth or if his hypocrisy is freedom

everyone's had an issue with him [there was another person like him - Sam - but he's long gone now]
his niche is evolution, homosexuality (he's not gay), openmindedness (since we're ignorant) and bible infallibility
but on all accounts he thinks he's truly a christian
just more "enlightened" than the droves of believers
his sig reads "If it weren't for Christians, I'd be a Christian."

some threads you can see his character with better eyes
