Vietnam POW/MIA bracelets - course, that might be specific to military kids, but I had four bands I wore.

It wasn't just for military families, I knew a few kids at school that wore them.

I remember those. My dad was Navy.

The best part of being a kid in the 70's is we went outside to play
not much of that today '''at least like that.
How about the California Freeformer the first mass produced skateboard

I was a kid in the 70's but there's no way I can remember when JFK was shot. That happened in 1963. I was on the way, but I wasn't born yet.

But let's see...what do I remember that hasn't been mentioned yet? I remember learning disco dances in gym class, but was very ambivalent about doing them because my church believed that dancing was sinful.

Homeschooling hadn't caught on yet, and I endured public school feeling different from my peers because of all the things we didn't do that they couldn't understand why we didn't do.

What else do I remember? Wading in the creek and catching minnows. I guess that's not a shared experience of other seventies kids, (though I think legalism in churches, especially southern churches, is!) but how many kids would have the opportunity to do something like that today? Besides, we didn't have computer or video games then. Somehow, I think the creek was at least a little more wholesome, even though we had to make sure we stayed upstream of the cows! [&:]

on a more somber note...

Charles Manson
Son of Sam
Zodiac Killer

I'm sure there are more that I just can't remember or don't want to remember[:'(]

Oh! And the movie The Exorcist! The book was very scary, the movie was just downright gross.

I only really remember Charles Manson. Maybe that was due to all the hype from the media?

Me too!

Gave me nightmares for weeks!

doinkdom -> RE: you know you're a 70s kid when .... (5/27/2008 12:34:43 PM)

Serial killers were almost normal in the 70's. That combined with movies were enough for everyone to have nightmares!

Oh and towards the end of the 70's Bette Midler was becoming popular among the regular people.

Jesus Christ Superstar was new and Fiddler on the Roof was my favorite movie!

Roberta_ -> RE: you know you're a 70s kid when .... (5/27/2008 12:39:51 PM)

I had never heard of Bette Midler until The Rose. I loved the song and thought the movie was OK.

Never saw Jesus Christ, Superstar- my non-Christian parents thought that it was a way of degrading Christians and wouldn't let us see it. I loved Fiddler on the Roof!

[:D]Oh my! I remember smelling our test papers before we wrote on them.

I graduated in 1972, and I remember that too. Not sure when mimeograph became a thing of the past.

How about The Waltons? Now there was a family!

Roberta_ -> RE: you know you're a 70s kid when .... (5/27/2008 1:11:16 PM)

The Waltons were awesome!

doinkdom -> RE: you know you're a 70s kid when .... (5/27/2008 1:49:23 PM)

I watched the Waltons, but could never get into Little House on the Prairie.

And the 70's was the decade full of nighttime soaps like Dallas, Dynasty, Falcon's Crest, etc. etc.

Which is why I wasn't all that crazy about night time TV..... that and I had to go to bed at 8:30 on school nights and 9 on weekends.

Annie64 -> RE: you know you're a 70s kid when .... (5/27/2008 11:09:04 PM)

I wasn't allowed to watch those nighttime soaps, but I do remember them. I agree with the poster who said The Waltons were awesome. I loved that show because it was so much like my own family! I watched Little House on the Prairie, too, and really liked it as well, because somewhere along the way, I found out that Melissa Sue Gilbert was the same age as me, so I kind of felt like I was growing up with her.

She's a year older than me. I always thought of her and Kristy McNichol as the "older sisters" I never had.

You know you're a 70's kid (well, I was a teen) when nothing phases you.

Cause, well, you were pretty much part of the pioneers for most of it.
[8D][sm=hippiesmile.gif]
YOU were already a teen in the 70's! Wow. What was that like?

[sm=halo.gif]

I graduated HS in 1976. The 70's Show on TV - as dorky as it is and all that...pretty much says it all for many of us. I know there are people out there that completely disagree but seriously...they are the minority.[;)]

The 70's fashions are coming back and they are just as tacky now as they were then. I was not a disco fan at all and completely went the other way when that broke loose.

Much of the TV I watched in the 70's was an episode here and there of a cop show my dad watched. I spent most of my time moping around, reading depressing poetry and listening to obscure music.
[8D]

No, what totally captures it is Dazed and Confused. Ohmygosh, that was about my high school. Had to be. [&:]

bzirk -> RE: you know you're a 70s kid when .... (5/28/2008 1:01:52 AM)

You know you're a child of the 70s when you despise the song Raindrops.

Has any other song been played more than that one? [8D]

Roberta_ -> RE: you know you're a 70s kid when .... (5/28/2008 1:19:20 AM)

LOL!

brothertodd -> RE: you know you're a 70s kid when .... (5/28/2008 2:50:52 AM)

I also remember the girl across the street in histarics and tears because of the death of Elvis

bzirk -> RE: you know you're a 70s kid when .... (5/28/2008 3:10:03 AM)

You know you're a 70s kid when you remember that it wasn't cool to like Elvis or country music -- back then anyway. [8D]

bzirk -> RE: you know you're a 70s kid when .... (5/28/2008 3:18:00 AM)

You know you're a 70s kid when you...

know what a Gremlin is. I wonder if those things are collector items now.

have a pet rock in its original "crate" buried in your "things" in the basement.

have a bunch of old Foghat and Bad Company albums in the basement. Or Maybe a few Yes, Grand Funk Railroad or Cat Stevens albums.

have numerous National Lampoon and a huge pile of Mad magazines in the basement.

bzirk -> RE: you know you're a 70s kid when .... (5/28/2008 3:19:53 AM)

But you really know you're a 70s kid when you have a stack of 8 tracks by Kansas and Three Dog Night and Jethro Tull that you got when you joined Columbia House for a $1 and your parents didn't understand why they were being dunned for the rest of the bill. [8D]

doinkdom -> RE: you know you're a 70s kid when .... (5/28/2008 10:14:05 AM)

[:D]Hey come on![:D]

Bad Company and Grand Funk and then later on...Grand Funk Railroad Rawk dude! [:D]

and nobody can do what Jethro Tull did with a flute!

Here's a real 70's band question: Does anyone remember the band with the albino guy who played the floating keyboard?

doinkdom -> RE: you know you're a 70s kid when .... (5/28/2008 10:15:30 AM)

and I'll have you know that my dad put me on a payment plan when I joined Columbia House and found out the deal was not a deal.[sm=nosestuckup.gif]

Course, it took him like 6 months to figure it out, but still....

Barbara Mandrell was my hero because I Was Country When Country Wasn't Cool. I actually had a friend dedicate that song to me at a school dance.

We were on vacation in WA and walked past a newspaper rack and that is how we found out. My mom was a big fan of his.
