Does your cat have claws? Do you recommend getting your cats declawed? Why does your cat have or does not have claws?

yes they all four have all their claws....and my couch is showing signs of it[:@]....but I wouldn't change it for anything. Two of them are indoor and outdoor (they would go crazy if we tried to keep them indoor all the time)...and they like to climb trees and I feel it is in their best interest to have them for defense and climbing, etc. Then we have two that are indoor only...one is trying to get out sometimes...the 4 month old one...but she isn't fixed yet, so until she is we are making her stay miserable inside...I am sure once she is fixed she will want to be outside some too. The other has no desire to ever even get near the door, much less venture out it. I wouldn't consider declawing them either...same thing as the outdoor ones....defense and climbing, etc. That's who they are...how God created them to be...and I don't like messing with things like that. I don't like messing with getting them fixed either, but we don't want more kittens around here (that's how we ended up with four to begin with....stray momma cat showed up on our doorstep last summer...so we ended up keeping her and two kittens from her first litter. Then she got pregnant again before we could get her fixed...kept one from that litter)

My cat has all her claws too. The only reason I'd have any of them removed was if she injured herself and it was part of the treatment. It's actually against the law in many countries (including the UK) to have them removed. She's never bothered with scratching up any of my furniture, but loves her scratching post. She's not so keen on getting her claws trimmed though[;)]

I refused to have my cat declawed after I found out they remove the entire first digit. That sounds really painful and opens them up to major infections during healing. Their claws can be trimmed and you can even purchase little plastic covers for them (no idea where or how, but I've seen them). Now, my cat keeps his claws in while playing, and even while fighting with me, too. Can't say the same about his teeth, though. [;)]

I've never had a cat that was declawed. I find it cruel and it can lead to a myriad of problems. (The little plastic covers are called Soft Paws, I think. I've used them with success, but the cat I have now was easier to train and doesn't scratch furniture.)

My three are not declawed, we worked from the moment we got them to not use claws on certain things. However, I do support declawing when used as an alternative to euthanasia or having to give to already over crowded rescues. My boss has been a vet for 20+ years and of the 6+ vets I've worked with that did declawing he's the best at it. Silly kittens go home wanting to play and be crazy within 24 hrs of the surgery. I am NOT a fan of doing to save your brand new leather sofa. That's just silly.

I'll be the oddball. My cat is declawed (front only) and I am glad she is. She is 9 years old and was declawed at the same time as she was spayed, I think around 1.5 years old. We have never owned our own home and most landlords will only allow declawed cats. She rarely goes outside...meaning, only when she sneaks out, and even without her front claws can climb trees. She once survived a month in a swamp filled with critters, with only burdocks to show for her time on the lam.[8\|] We never had any problems with her lack of front claws, and we've been able to keep her, when otherwise we wouldn't have.

We debated for months on weither or not to have our cat declawed and have not done it yet so I doubt that we will. He has already managed to tear up a lot of the wood work around archways and whatnot in our home that needs to be replaced, but seems to have favorite spots. Just recently we've begun to allow him to go out side on his own and he's always come back, and we have plenty of feral cats around here. I like the idea that he would be able to defend himself should he need too. The only thing he brings back now are a bunch of woodticks! Blessings, Garsy

Our cats have very sharp claws and the two of them don't mind showing you how hard they scratch,especially my coon cat.

I have my son's two cats with me, one of the requirements before taking them was that they be declawed (front) and spayed. I did have new leather furniture and didn't want it ruined- since they still have their back claws I still have some gouges in the leather [:@], but not nearly as bad as if they were "sharpening" their claws. The Vet they went to did lazer surgery, not sure what the differences in types of surgery are, but they did heal fast and do not seem to have any ill effects from it.

We had our first cat declawed basically because that is what I thought you did when you had a cat. My second cat actually found us and she was not declawed and we did not declaw her. I am glad we didn't. I am not sure where I heard it but have heard that sometimes cats that have been declawed are more agressive than those who weren't. That was true for my two cats. My non declawed cat is much sweeter and she never scratches us, she might show her claws to the dog though. She did tear up one of my couches and would claw the molding around one door. But we bought one of those scratching boxes that looks like box that has catnip in it and she uses that and hasn't touched my furniture or molding since. I would not declaw any future cats we will have either.

My cats have all their claws. One even has more than her fair share (she's polydactyl).

LOL....the cats are actually the reason we didn't buy a new sofa this year....we are letting them get trained first then next year we will get what we really want to get for furniture!!! So far the spray bottle seems to be working wonders though....I don't even have to spray them, just the sound of it makes them stop scratching now!! It has really cut down though since we started letting the male cat out (we wouldn't let him outside til he was neutered....beginning of last month we did that and now he loves his new found freedom on our back yard!!!). The one that scratches most now is only four months old, and is getting fixed in the next few months (depending on how long the list is for it at the clinic....I need to call about that today). Then she can go outside too...she is itching to get out right now...so hopefully it will help in the furniture problem!! Donna...that is weird that they will let a declawed cat but not one with claws....most places we have ever lived it was either pay for a pet clause on the lease or don't have any animal...they never specified that it had to be a declawed animal (cat or dog). How odd.

My lease states they have to be front declawed. They've never seen the cat but I guess it doesn't matter. Mine is front declawed. I rent. I doubt she'll get out because she hides from the door. I might get her micro chipped. She'll stay inside if I ever move. I really don't care about the furniture. If I owned a house then I would try not declawing. I do have a scratching post and she wouldn't use it?? I tried the tape too.

When our old cat was indoor only, we used to just trim a little off the tip so when she scratched us playing or kneeded us when we rubbed her, it wouldn't hurt as bad. We used to just use baby fingernail clippers. She used to occasionally escape though, so that's why we didn't have her declawed, plus we knew we would eventually move to a neighborhood where we could let her out safely. When she became an indoor/outdoor cat, we never needed to trim her nails because her running on concrete dulled them a little.

Mine has all of them, and she allows me to clip all of them too. I can keep them short enough as to not cause any damage to anything. We keep them, just in case she should get out and need to defend herself. My first cat was declawed in the front when I got her.

Mine has All her claws. Although my adorable kitty did scratch a number of things I have, I don't regret keeping her claws. I believe God created them for a purpose and we should NOT interfere with His plan and the way He created things. He knows best the usage of things!

My cats have all their claws. We do trim them (its pretty easy, just clip the tips with regular nail clippers). I do not like the idea of declawing personally, because it is in essence, cutting off the first joint of their fingers. Plus our cats may end up has partly outside cats one day and they need the defense.

Does your cat have claws? Yes. Do you recommend getting your cats declawed? No. I have extremely strong opinions regarding declawing except in the most extreme of circumstances. It's cruel and often (not always) creates much bigger issues for the cat (aggression and litter box issues are the 2 biggies). Why does your cat have or does not have claws? Because God gave them claws for a reason. Because there are many ways to deal with cats & scratching. Because if you don't want to deal with cats being cats, you shouldn't get a cat. Because I wouldn't amputate the ends of someone's fingers for my personal benefit, and I see no reason to do the identical procedure on a cat. And it turns my stomach that there are landlords that require folks to declaw their cats. I'll stop now because this is a very emotional subject for me. All I ask is that if you are considering declawing your cat, please, please, please know there are alternatives in almost all cases and please, please, please get informed as to what declawing involves and some of the very common problems that many, many cats (and hence their owners) deal with after the surgery. By the way - as far as leather sofas. I know there are probably exceptions to this, but most cats will not scratch leather sofas. You will get scratches from them racing across the sofa, but very few cats will use them as a scratching post.

Yep! My aunt is an interior decorator who has had cats longer than I have been alive and kept trying to convince my mom to buy leather because she was so tired of her cat scratching up her other sofa. She finally convinced my mom to try it and sure enough - no more scratching! [:D]

Now I'll REALLY be the exception here ... we have 3 cats, and all of them have 4 paw declaw. I wasn't planning on declawing them (we got them all at the same time), but after a few trips to the ER for myself to have abcesses drained from the claws nicking me when they jumped off my lap, we decided the claws or the cats had to go ... and since we were in love with our kitties, and the humane society was so overrun that they were euthanising just to keep the overcrowding to a minimum (this was after sending some of the extra cats to other shelters), we decided to have full declaws done. The cats have not suffered any adverse effects from the declaw, and this was 9 years ago. We love our kitties dearly and they love us as well -- they will come and cuddle and snuggle all the time.
