VisitorinWaiting -> Need quick answers about ribs... (4/28/2008 10:52:04 AM)

You all might remember my post recently about the Angel Food program. We did that this past month...only getting one box though. Anyway, we got some ribs. I have never made ribs before. I don't even know where to start...but I'm planning on having them for dinner tonight...and I have them out thawing right now. I've been looking around on the internet, but I thought you all might have some extra tips or suggestions or better recipes for me... Thanks... :)

Avoid grilling them with a sugary sauce (like BBQ) b/c it will burn. If you plan a sauce like that, add it after they are cooked.

I like to cook them on the grill with low indirect hear for 2 hours.

Lots of people boil their ribs first to start the cooking process and make them more tender. I don't like this method because the ribs fall a part on the grill. If you cook them slowly, there is no need to boil them first. If you want them done faster, it is a good technique.

I found a recipe that might work well for me with time constraits with children and all... Basically, it is this...rub them with some seasonings, bake them in a 300 degree oven for an hour in a baking dish, covered with foil, slits in the foil. Remove the foil, bake for another hour or until meat is tender...add sauces after cooking (optional). To those of you who have cooked ribs before, does this sound good, reasonable? I would like something that I can get in the oven or the crock pot and forget about with three small children (dd had surgery last week, so things are hectic around here...)

That sounds good, I think. I wouldn't put it in the crockpot because it will make it fall apart.

We do ours on the grill. Wrap in foil, with BBQ sauce or a marinade on it, and grill forever on low heat, no flame touching the foil until the end.

Season them with garlic powder, salt, and pepper, paint on some bbq sauce, then follow the directions you found.

Those directions sound good.

I have a friend who does hers in the crockpot and they fall apart and are very wet. I prefer them to be dry (not dried out, but not wet.) They have a good taste and are tender, though.

rub them with spices, wrap them in a sealed foil tent with maybe a quarter cup of water in the bottom. Cook on grill for about an hour, open foil tent for last 15 minutes and apply bbq sauce.

I have a really great rib recipe if you would like it for future use, I'll share...

But for sure, rub them with spices and bake them in a slow oven for a few hours and they'll be great.

Lots of people like to par-boil their ribs, and that's the best way to make them tough! Baking them is pretty foolproof!

How were they?
