ORIGINAL: Qtman In case I haven't told you, you guys are awesome. I know Kerrlaw1 will agree and appreciate you all. I certainly do agree and appreciate you all more than I can express. Thanks to Sam for the phone message and for starting this thread in memory of my father. When I am able, I intend to tell you all more about him and how great he was. The "receiving of friends", as we call it around here, will be Thursday, May 1, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., EST. For those not familiar, this is a period in which friends and neighbors come to the funeral home, proceed by and view the body, and give their condolences to the family. It is not an unhappy occasion, more a celebration of the life of the departed. There will be many good stories told. I have already heard a few from friends and family that were new to me. The funeral service will immediately follow the reception, at 8:00 p.m. The pastor of Dad's church will preside, and another preacher who worked with him (Dad) for several years will also speak. There will then be a graveside service on Friday, May 2, at 11:00 a.m. This is generally a more somber occasion. The church then has a dinner for the (extended) family in the fellowship hall. There is rarely a lack of food preceding and following a Southern funeral. Friends, family, and neighbors have already been so generous that I am in danger of losing my schoolboy figure. Your time of silence and prayer is such a wonderful gesture. I intend to share it with Cindy in the morning and my mother soon. They will probably not appreciate (but I do) how hard it was for some of you to remain silent. [sm=cooltilt.gif] We spent today doing housekeeping matters: picking the casket and clothes, signing documents at the cemetery, calling pall bearers, getting haircuts, etc.. Normally we would have had the funeral a day sooner, but the local funeral home can only accomodate two at a time and unfortunately, business is booming. My mother is having a very difficult time, and I will prevail on you again to pray that she will have peace and calm in her heart. You are a wonderful group of friends and I love you. Mike
