I just don't get 'demeaning' out of God's conversation with Job. I don't think God ever purposefully demeans, He doesn't have to act out in that attitude. He's God and is able to humble people without being demeaning. Nor do I believe that God was attempting to humiliate Job, He was simply putting questions to Job to make him wake up and say, "Oh, yeah, I guess you're right, I really don't KNOW everything, do I?"

That conversation would have me saying, "Yes, L-rd!" "Yes, L-rd!" a whole lot, but it would have left me smiling with delight at the wit and often laughing, if I could face the Almighty and open my mouth at all. I love those chapters -- some of my favorites, because of the humor and wit.

This makes me wonder why some love this kind of wit while others are hurt by it. There has to be a reason.

Another Scripture that strikes me similarly, but in a softer way, is the 107th Psalm that basically says, "Different groups made really stupid choices, and when they struck bottom, they came to their senses, called upon G-d, and He brought them out of their terrors."

Yes, he was being sarcastic. But in that case it seems his sarcasm was about himself in order to make a point and not aimed at ridiculing or putting down others.

It was type of reverse sarcasm. He was actually saying that the people were extremely foolish because he would have kicked those gross sinners out of the church rather than embracing and encouraging them in their sin.

Sarcasm should only be practiced by the competent professional...kids...don't try this at home.

There is also a sarcastic attitude where much of what someone says always has some real bite to it. At times my boss is like that. Questioning your honor in a very direct and meaningful way.

I read somewhere that the word "sarcasm" comes from two Greek words meaning "flesh tearing". I wonder if that sheds any light on what purpose might be served by the use of sarcasm, either by those pursuing worldly goals, or by those doing the work of the kingdom.

I think there's a problem with sarcasm, and even with irony, in Internet forums. It has to do with the fact that the internet provides us with the illusion of filial closeness, but not with its reality. Sarcasm between friends is one thing. Sarcasm between strangers is something completely different. I don't think most of us have gotten used to the odd combination of "closely knit strangers" that internet communication facilitates.

It takes a couple of days to learn how to post in a forum. It may take more than a couple of years to learn when to post in a forum, and when to hit "cancel" instead of "ok".
