Ed Ed, Ed, You are handling this Cheesecake Situation all wrong. I was teased a lot a a child. And I was told that if ignored hem they would stop and may be even go away.

Your allies thought of you as their leader. How can they stand strong in their own convictions when they see that you can't?
How can they hold true to what they once thought of as the truth when you are straddling the fence?
How can you expect them to still be loyal to a leader who can't be loyal to himself?
