When I take acidophilus for "down below" issues, I take a couple pretty much every time I walk into the kitchen. It is not something you can OD on, it is something that is naturally in your body that your body needs more of right now for some reason. I would take at least 8 per day and then wean down slowly once there are no signs of thrush in either of you.

For David, I would do the acidophilus paste after every feed, bottle or breast. You do it after so it can sit longer on his tongue.

Dr. Sears website says you can add Acidophilus to the bottle too. That's what I was doing when Chase had a yeast rash on his bum. I took my capsules apart and measured out 1 tsp of the powder into the bottle.

The paste would work great because it would be in direct contact.

Also make sure to treat your nipples for the thrush...if you don't you'll not be able to get rid of it...

Not that you'll really 'forget' to treat yourself ... your nips will probably be as itchy as all get-out!

We've started pumping just to try to do a nighttime bottle, but I'm having a hard time with the let down while pumping and am not getting very much. I've ordered an electric pump and hope that will help. I know I need to be as relaxed as possible and I try looking at Caden while I do it. Any other suggestions?

Nicole

When are you pumping (in relation to feeds)?

Do it in the bathtub, that is where I always got the best yield.

Oh, your sling(and Emily's) are getting serged tonight and should get in the mail SOON. I don't have the car during the day so it's hard to go to the post office.

Well, I just started 2 days ago. We were going to try the first bottle tonight (he's 4 weeks old today ). Anyway, I pump in the morning after he eats (he only eats on one side, so I pump a little from that side, then pump the other breast). Then I pump again in the afternoon or evening. Should I be doing something different?

Oh, we cross-posted - thank you - I can't wait for the sling! I'll have to try the bathtub thing. It's hard to find the time for a bath, but that will be a great excuse!

who do I call about the thrush, my ob or the ped? Midwives in NC can't write prescriptions.

Pick up some Gentian Violet ... it's available at any health food type store. Just keep it away from anything you don't want permanently stained purple. And as for the wee babe, dip a Q-tip in it and lightly rub it on his lips and the inside of his mouth. (And then use another Q-tip on your nipples to treat yourself)

ETA: the Q-tip makes it easier to apply and less likely to drip all over the place ... it also stops you from using too much (too much can be poisonous)

Nicole,

How much are you getting when you pump at the moment?

If you have an OB, I'd go with them. The ped may not be willing to order something for you too, but the OB should be willing to for the baby.

Emily ... I forgot to mention ... midwives here can't order meds either, other than Diclectin for morning sickness. If you are requiring a script for something while in their care, however, THEY do the calling for you ... around here they have a favourite OB who is a huge fan of midwifery, and he trusts their judgment without requiring you to do a 'consult' with him first. If the midwife says you need something for thrush, or a prescription galactagogue (something to build your milk supply) he'll call it into the pharmacy and you just have to go and pick it up. I *love* that ... especially when the average wait time at an OB office is 2+ hours ....

I have an ob I used as my "back up" while pregnant. I will call his office in the morning. I don't have a car so I will have to have my sister pick it up for me when she gets out of class.

Jacob had a very minor case of thrush. Acidophilus alone was enough to get rid of it for us. But with the girls I had to get a prescription for something. Can't remember what it was but it was NOT the genetian violet - I didn't want to deal with that if I didn't have to.

Nathaniel is really hurting me! he keeps biting me nearly every feed and now I just sit there so anxious and scared he is about to do it the whole feed. I really hope that he stops it or that I can slowly wean him. Grace was weaned at 11 months I think.

Nicole, Nath is old enough to be disciplined not to bite. When he bites pull away and say loudly "NO BITE!", then deny him the breast for a minute or two. If he repeats, get up put him in his crib and walk away for 5 minutes.

Let him scream his head off for milk. He'll learn quickly that biting means no milk from mommy.

When Chase started biting, it was about the same time that he was never interested in nursing, all he wanted to do was play. So that's when we started weaning. He didn't really want the milk, so it wouldn't have worked for us to say no and put him down.

Well, if he wants to wean then he wants to wean. Either way, don't put your breast into his mouth if he's biting.

Manda, actually I got quite a bit last night. We did the first bottle. I was in bed, but dh said it went well - so I actually got about 5 hours of sleep!!! Woohoo!! After his 2am feeding I pumped b/c I was SO full after missing the feeding before. I got a lot then, so I guess that will be prime time for pumping. I guess I should probably pump one other time during the day too so we will have enough for whatever. I don't know how that will go since I have trouble with the letdown while pumping. Maybe the electric pump will help that.

Nicole, I'm sorry your little guy is biting! I'm not looking forward to that - it hurts enough when he bites without teeth!!

This is what we did with Jimmy too. It took a while though. He still bites occasionally, but not in like a playful way, he does it on accident when he's sleepy sometimes. Honestly I've gotten a little used to it.

The thrush is worse today. It looks a lot worse in David's mouth and it is extremely painful for me to nurse or pump. We are taking him to the doctor at 4:00 and I have an appointment with my OB at 3:00 tomorrow. No one would give me a prescription over the phone. I am in pain when feedng my baby again.
