She sounds wonderful, Brandy! I'm glad you were able to get her nurse on the "not good" side. It probably is an angle thing and which side you are most comfortable holding her on. With all of mine I've had difficulties getting them to nurse on my right when I'm sitting up, simply because I feel akward holding them on that side. Laying down, though, the left side is easier. Once she's a little bigger, laying down and nursing will become your favorite thing. It's great! --Kat

ORIGINAL: KatMack Make sure you treat your pump equipment for thrush also (that's mainly what I used the Gentian Violet on). I didn't at first and that prolonged the whole ordeal for us. --Kat How do I do that?

After pumping, I'd wash the horns with soap and water then put the Gentian Violet on a cotton ball and rubbed it all over the inside of the pump horns (if it touched my breast it was purple!) I set them out to airdry until my next pump session then would rinse them before using. --Kat

Reagan's exclusive BF poop was about the color of peanut butter. Her poop did smell sweet, or like cheese, like maybe cottage cheese? Lincoln's poop was bright mustard yellow, and is now changing to the color of peanut butter (orangy-tan). His stinks, but I know not as bad as it will when I start solids. He also farts, and those stink too. My mom has a theory as to why we never heard or smelled Reagan fart, but Lincoln stinks up the house. Reagan has always had super active bowels, 6x daily as a newborn, tapering down to thrice per day now that she's two. Since two weeks old, Lincoln has only pooped about three times per week. My mom says that any gas is moved out with Reagan's BMs, while Lincoln's gas has to be expelled inbetween BMs, he can't hold it in.

Totally gets called Princess Isabel and Princess Grumpypants when she goes into serious freak out mode over nursing. Which is why I'm here.. I need advice/help/assistance. She seems to get hungry but can't settle down and latch on until she's had a few minutes worth of crying/screaming. I am trying/investigating if it's from my breasts being hard from being full. When she does finally get latched on one side the other starts pouring milk. By the time she's ready for the other side, say 15 minutes later, she latches right on. It's all nice and soft and flowing at that point. I'm expressing some milk to get it flowing for her on the first side and that seems to help some. She would get on and suck and suck and get mad because there wasn't anything happening. If I get it started for her she lets a little leak out and I can tell she's getting it and she settles in. Am I starting a bad habit? Also, positioning.. another possible problem is that I don't seem to start her low enough so instead of her chin leading it's the top half and she's at this weird angle. We are working on that, but any tips on how to help get better at it? Right now I lean over her and get her latched and then settle back for her to nurse. Which begs the question.. am I also getting into a bad habit of being semi reclined back when we nurse? We are in bed most feedings due to heat issues out here in living room or it being the middle of the night.. so I sit up, get pillows behind me and use boppy to position to her and then end up semi laying back to nurse her. She doesn't seem to mind but again, don't want bad habit at this early stage. This may be last question - again, bad trend? I totally let her finish one side, burp if she needs to and see how she's doing. Sometimes she passes out at the nipple, unlatches herself and dozes right out. I feel bad for moving her since it wakes her up right now and then we start the fussy cycle again. Sometimes I get lucky but sometimes not. At night I can pass her to Jer and he will sleep with her on his chest and she's content. But, is it bad to let her sleep essentially sitting there at the breast? Again, she's not latched on, she's just out cold. Should also note - when nursing I have to use a rolled up burp cloth under the breast to help support it for her. I nursed her yesterday at docs office no problem but I was also straight up in a chair, at home in our comfy space I need the support.

She seems to get hungry but can't settle down and latch on until she's had a few minutes worth of crying/screaming. Is it possible that you are getting her to the breast after she's been hungry for a few minutes? Newborns can be so unforgiving if you don't give them the breast at the exact moment they discover they're hungry. A hungry baby that won't latch is usually frustrated at something. Maybe it's that she's really hungry by the time the breast is offered. quote:
Right now I lean over her and get her latched and then settle back for her to nurse. I think a lot of mom's learn that way. I know I did and gave myself some neck & back aches over it! As far as the rest of the questions......very little that is happening at day 5 will continue for long. Babies change and adapt rapidly. They grow so quickly that you will notice your angles, positions, and latch change as her head gets bigger and stronger. Some people think letting a baby fall asleep at the breast is horrible. Other moms are so thankful for an easy, consistent way to get their baby to sleep. Most babies quit falling asleep at the breast after a while. I'm still up many times per night with Lincoln. He now is capable of being put down totally awake, and just patted & shushed to sleep. However, basically every night of his life he's slept at the breast 1-2 hours. I nurse in a rocking chair at night, and usually at one feeding I fall asleep until he wakes for the next feeding. Those naps at the breast haven't hindered him from learning to sleep away from the breast or fall asleep away from the breast. It is wise to be conscious of the habits you are creating with your baby. Most babies respond to the routine Mom sets up. But you really should give yourself a break. Your body has only had 5 days to heal from 42 weeks of trauma. You still have time to figure out sleeping arrangements, nursing positions, and habits. quote:
When she does finally get latched on one side the other starts pouring milk. By the time she's ready for the other side, say 15 minutes later, she latches right on. It's all nice and soft and flowing at that point. This just sounds like your body is going through the normal post-partum oversupply. Soon enough you won't have this problem. If you are really 'pouring milk,' I would collect it. You may find you get a few ounces each day. Having a freezer stash could be a blessing if you need a bottle someday.
