We've had a breakthrough already on our own.

She did her first back to back to back session of eating, hanging out and 20 minutes later wanting more foods.

SO I got her happy with the Left side and then Jer and I talked her through the R side, she'd latch, suck and pop off angry, rinse and repeat. FINALLY she latched and I kinda held her there stronger than I had before. (still freaks me out to 'push' her into it like they showed me) and SHE ATE for a good 20 minutes. You could literally SEE the difference in that side. OH MY WORD can we spell relief???

Then she went back for the third/final session on L and is snuggly on Jer's tummy right now fast asleep. He's following behind closely. We are totally the parents who cannot put her down for a minute and just keep swapping off so the other can either eat or get sleep. It's working great so far.

I think we have 'bargained' that he will wake up anytime I need him during the night as long I as keep on changing diapers!

Which she has only had 1 real stinker of a diaper so far. I think all the poking at the hosp got to her. 3 Glucose checks on day 1, 1 FOREVER Bilirubin day 2 and her PKU screen, and 1 quick but ouchy looking Bili day 3. Poor heels. "We" (her and I) talked about how my milk will help her heal and get her jaundice down and she grunted her approval.

I love my Princess Isabel.

She sounds wonderful, Brandy! I'm glad you were able to get her nurse on the "not good" side. It probably is an angle thing and which side you are most comfortable holding her on. With all of mine I've had difficulties getting them to nurse on my right when I'm sitting up, simply because I feel akward holding them on that side. Laying down, though, the left side is easier.

Once she's a little bigger, laying down and nursing will become your favorite thing. It's great!

Brandy, glad y'all got that figured out! Engorgement is awful, I know.

Jimmy is 13 months, and he nuses at least 6 times a day, 4 times at night. A few other women on here have had babies who nurse more often than that at an older age....No such thing as too much breastmilk.

Yuppers. Biruk is 13 months (I didn't realize they were the same age!) and he's only just beginning to slow down--he's down to one night feeding, and then every 3-4 hours during the day. We offer solids anytime we eat, and have for many months now, but he's usually not interested in more than a bite or two. Unless it's lentils. He will eat a bowlful of them.

Make sure you treat your pump equipment for thrush also (that's mainly what I used the Gentian Violet on). I didn't at first and that prolonged the whole ordeal for us.

How do I do that?

After pumping, I'd wash the horns with soap and water then put the Gentian Violet on a cotton ball and rubbed it all over the inside of the pump horns (if it touched my breast it was purple!) I set them out to airdry until my next pump session then would rinse them before using.

And I would encourage you to try it even when she's small! I was nursing Gwen laying down when she was only a day old - it's not hard, depending on, I suppose, the size of your breasts! Although if you've got a burper like me, you have to sit up and burp her anyways

I don't know how nursing laying down will work for us, I have to give her a gap to breathe with since my breasts are so large. I know she can breathe if I don't but it's this difficult sounding breath and she settles in nicely if I give her a gap.

We've had two successes on the right side today. She's also only taking 15 min to drain now. She got squirted/choked this morning and had milk dribbles running down for a second. I'm happy! I let her work on the left side and I massage the right and by the time she's done with the L the R is softer and she latches on better. go figure.

Had our first pure BM stool at doc office this morning. Oh my word. Tooty and loud and almost busted out the side. Jeremy was peaking to see if her gas was producing anything.. and got more than he bargained for..

I love BM BM's!! They smell sweeet.

So weird.

You may find it works in a couple months. I also have to make a gap for my tiny babies, even though "they" say you shouldn't have to. One thing to be careful of...that you don't get milk stuck up above where you're making the gap. Kind of push it downward every now and then to prevent that.

I can't wait for orange poops again! Levi's are so disgusting now that he's on all solids and regular milk.

Jer about FREAKED when he saw orange. For some reason he thought it meant blood.

I reminded him about the lovely chart we got from the BF class and he immediately calmed down and started laughing.

Buttery Popcorn ... hmm. I will have to research what I think it smells like.

Ok nap time before next feed!!

Reagan's exclusive BF poop was about the color of peanut butter. Her poop did smell sweet, or like cheese, like maybe cottage cheese?

Lincoln's poop was bright mustard yellow, and is now changing to the color of peanut butter (orangy-tan). His stinks, but I know not as bad as it will when I start solids. He also farts, and those stink too.

My mom has a theory as to why we never heard or smelled Reagan fart, but Lincoln stinks up the house. Reagan has always had super active bowels, 6x daily as a newborn, tapering down to thrice per day now that she's two. Since two weeks old, Lincoln has only pooped about three times per week. My mom says that any gas is moved out with Reagan's BMs, while Lincoln's gas has to be expelled inbetween BMs, he can't hold it in.

Mustard/golden yellow is what my m/w's and the LLL leaders yesterday said means baby is getting lots of good hindmilk Just for fun, since we're talking poop, Gwen has pooped 9 times since midnight last night. Yes - 9 times. She pretty well goes during or after every feed! So. Much. Cloth. Diaper. Laundry!

Totally gets called Princess Isabel and Princess Grumpypants when she goes into serious freak out mode over nursing.

Which is why I'm here.. I need advice/help/assistance.

She seems to get hungry but can't settle down and latch on until she's had a few minutes worth of crying/screaming. I am trying/investigating if it's from my breasts being hard from being full. When she does finally get latched on one side the other starts pouring milk. By the time she's ready for the other side, say 15 minutes later, she latches right on. It's all nice and soft and flowing at that point.

I'm expressing some milk to get it flowing for her on the first side and that seems to help some. She would get on and suck and suck and get mad because there wasn't anything happening. If I get it started for her she lets a little leak out and I can tell she's getting it and she settles in.

Am I starting a bad habit?

Also, positioning.. another possible problem is that I don't seem to start her low enough so instead of her chin leading it's the top half and she's at this weird angle. We are working on that, but any tips on how to help get better at it? Right now I lean over her and get her latched and then settle back for her to nurse. Which begs the question.. am I also getting into a bad habit of being semi reclined back when we nurse? We are in bed most feedings due to heat issues out here in living room or it being the middle of the night.. so I sit up, get pillows behind me and use boppy to position to her and then end up semi laying back to nurse her. She doesn't seem to mind but again, don't want bad habit at this early stage.

This may be last question - again, bad trend? I totally let her finish one side, burp if she needs to and see how she's doing. Sometimes she passes out at the nipple, unlatches herself and dozes right out. I feel bad for moving her since it wakes her up right now and then we start the fussy cycle again. Sometimes I get lucky but sometimes not. At night I can pass her to Jer and he will sleep with her on his chest and she's content. But, is it bad to let her sleep essentially sitting there at the breast? Again, she's not latched on, she's just out cold.

Should also note - when nursing I have to use a rolled up burp cloth under the breast to help support it for her. I nursed her yesterday at docs office no problem but I was also straight up in a chair, at home in our comfy space I need the support.

Is it possible that you are getting her to the breast after she's been hungry for a few minutes? Newborns can be so unforgiving if you don't give them the breast at the exact moment they discover they're hungry. A hungry baby that won't latch is usually frustrated at something. Maybe it's that she's really hungry by the time the breast is offered.

quote:

I think a lot of mom's learn that way. I know I did and gave myself some neck & back aches over it!

As far as the rest of the questions......very little that is happening at day 5 will continue for long. Babies change and adapt rapidly. They grow so quickly that you will notice your angles, positions, and latch change as her head gets bigger and stronger.

Some people think letting a baby fall asleep at the breast is horrible. Other moms are so thankful for an easy, consistent way to get their baby to sleep. Most babies quit falling asleep at the breast after a while.

I'm still up many times per night with Lincoln. He now is capable of being put down totally awake, and just patted & shushed to sleep. However, basically every night of his life he's slept at the breast 1-2 hours. I nurse in a rocking chair at night, and usually at one feeding I fall asleep until he wakes for the next feeding. Those naps at the breast haven't hindered him from learning to sleep away from the breast or fall asleep away from the breast.

It is wise to be conscious of the habits you are creating with your baby. Most babies respond to the routine Mom sets up. But you really should give yourself a break. Your body has only had 5 days to heal from 42 weeks of trauma. You still have time to figure out sleeping arrangements, nursing positions, and habits.

quote:

When she does finally get latched on one side the other starts pouring milk. By the time she's ready for the other side, say 15 minutes later, she latches right on. It's all nice and soft and flowing at that point.

This just sounds like your body is going through the normal post-partum oversupply. Soon enough you won't have this problem. If you are really 'pouring milk,' I would collect it. You may find you get a few ounces each day. Having a freezer stash could be a blessing if you need a bottle someday.

Justice is like that too...I have found that if I can calm him down first with my finger or pacifier then it is easier. Also if I catch him before he really knows full on that he is hungry. Once he gets to the crying stage he is pretty hard to get latched on...so we have been watching closely and as soon as he starts stirring from sleep I will get him nursing. Then he nurses for a while, takes a break to burp and stay awake for a while, then nurses again back to sleep.

every one of mine have had their own comfortable angle to nurse...and I get them where they are comfy then Paul shoves pillows or blankets where necessary so I am comfortable. Once baby gets bigger it gets easier to know how they will want to be held, but in the beginning especially it may take a while to get it right for you both.

I nurse and hold all of mine quite a lot...and no it isn't a bad thing.

Brandy, I did this and it was a heavenly mode of assistance. My hand would alwyas cramp during nursing trying to support my breast. It would allow me to have one hand free to hold her hand or a foot.

So when little one latches on there can be some milk leaking out around her mouth and its running down onto us and while its a nuisance I'm wondering if there is something off with her latch or just too much milk for her mouth to handle?

totally normal. In fact make sure you clean and dry her neck well daily because this can cause some pretty bad neck fold rashes with some babies that tend to "leak" a lot.
