I was thinking specifically about the "breathe holes"/ventilation at the end where the baby's head will go, but here is a general spec. for a safety mattress, from Mothercare: quote:
This is our timeless ventilated foam safety mattress. Suitable for newborns & toddlers alike! Manufactured using a non-allergenic CMHR 25 density foam - 10 cm (4") depth The head section is ventilated which aids the circulation of air around baby's head and also allows the drainage of any fluids/liquids (sick), particularly where newborn babies are concerned. The head section is covered with polyester tricot mesh, the rest of the mattress is covered with a non-toxic, easy wipe-down, hygenic & waterproof PVC. This mattress is manufactured without the use of any antimony, phosphorous, arsenic, barium, lead or other nasty fire-retardent chemicals. Mattress covers are easily removed for washing by means of a zip which is the full length of the mattress. This mattress offers firm support and comfort.

A prayer request, my friends. Nathan went from a baby who slept 9-10.5 hours solid at night, to in the past couple days, waking up twice at night, then waking up 6 or more times at night. We've tried Motrin for teething, Vick's Baby Rub and Plug-in Vapors for nasal congestion; I'm even nursing a bit more then I'd planned. But after a few solid hours of sleep, he's waking up every 20-45 minutes for the rest of the night and having a lot of trouble getting back to sleep. I don't believe this is a sleep training issue, as it is way to sudden, and he was sleeping decently well only a few nights ago. I think we simply need to ride this out. dH found out that he was really thirsty last night, so we're going to offer him water and maybe try leaving a sippy of water by his bed (if he doesn't soak his bed playing with it). Homeopathy will not be used in this house. I brought it up to dH, and it isn't going to happen. End of story and out. In my husband's defense, he is very sensitive now to having a newly pregnant wife and is more then willing to get up at 2am with his fussy son so that I might get some rest.

Praying for you - just know that it will pass. Teething with those back teeth can be a horrible time.

Judah seems to get thirsty at night too. I think I'll try the sippy cup Donna mentioned, but what I have been doing that works great is leaving a bottle of water in his crib with him - during the day water and juice go in a sippy cup, but so far he hasn't been able to leak liquid out of a bottle.

So I don't know exactly how to answer your question about the "safety mattress".

I would not have wanted my babies to sleep on a mattress where there were no ventilation holes at the head. Both my cot (crib) mattress and my carrycot mattress had safety mattress with holes at the head end.

It is not covered with plastic.

I personally still prefer the ventilated mattress head - even with a terry sheet over the top, it's still more breathable than just fabric.

Oh, our pack and play has gotten so much use. First as his infant bed the first two months, now as a temporary holding area. Nathan is actually very sweet during the day, happy and playful most of the time. Oh sure, he objects when I pull him away from something he wants, or he goes a little stir crazy if we stay in th house for to long. But that's normal stuff for him. About the diluted tea, I wouldn't think Greg would have a problem with it. I can ask him. Heaven knows we've put everything else into Nathan's stomach. He had sushi today, and it wasn't the first time. We've given him raw honey, peanut butter, shrimp, etc. I don't entirely understand dH on the homeopathy issue, but I respect that he is a parent, too. I think a lot of families, liberal, moderate and conservative can sideline the opinion of fathers.

We may differ in other areas, but I have great respect that you respect your husband as the father...that takes a lot sometimes for women to admit that they aren't the only ones being "the parent".

We don't have mattresses like that, ours are just inner springs, with foam, covered by plastic. Well, Gabby's crib mattress is like that. We have a waveless water bed. Ruth, what about Melatonin? It's not homeopathic since it's already found in our body, it's natural and has been proven to be effective(and safe) in children. Oh, if/when you research it you will find that it's only really been studied in children with neurological disorders but all the pharmacists, and Gabby's Pedi have ok'ed it's use when she is teething or sick. It does seem to work. quote:

I think it also depends on the father. If I asked Micah about his thoughts on Homeopathic use for Gabby he would look at me like I had 3 heads. But then, I am slowly pulling him to the crunchy side. MWHAHAHA!

Melatonin is discouraged for nursing mothers. I'm not even supposed to use it on myself, so I'm not sure why I would pump it into my baby. Everything is about dosages. So, just because something is natural and found in our body, doesn't mean I would give some to my baby. I would be willing to talk to my doctor about it, but I did do research on melatonin when Nathan was really little for use on me, and they said no to a nursing mom. If my doctor approved a dosage for Nathan, then I would, but I wouldn't be willing to go it alone. I respect that there is more to health then what's approved by the FDA, but again I say "Just because something is natural does not make it safe."

Hm. I was told it was safe when nursing It's safe in the Dr.Hale book, and according to Kelly Mom's list. And I know that just because something is natural, does not automatically make it safe. Thus the reason I don't take some of the herbs that would probably fix my menstrual cycle problems right up.

Yeah, I think my post came off to harsh. I'm sorry about that. I have trouble expressing myself in the written format. If Nathan's sleep issues continue, I will speak with my doctor about it. There must be conflicting info out there about nursing moms.

It's ok, Ruth. I am the only one of us 3 women in my family with kids who uses homeopathic remedies. I'm sure I'm a bit touchy about it as well, but quite honestly I feel the same way about the whole "It's not FDA approved" argument. It just makes me want to scream, if the FDA was always right we wouldn't have drug recalls and we wouldn't have "black box" drugs. I do understand that regulation is better, which is why we use Nordic Naturals Omega's instead of the cheap stuff, they are regulated in Norway and are tested by a third party for heavy metal content. I just don't think that regulation is the end all to product safety and I'm tired of having my judgment as a parent challenged because I make a "different" decision. Anyway, that really had nothing to do with you. I will be praying that Nathan starts sleeping better.

I didn't have any kind of problems with Dave on this - he just automatically assumed that I knew what was best for our children. Ever since he met me he knew I had looked at this area in great detail, and "knew my onions". That is exactly like Micah.
