I've nly had little problems at WIC. When they askes for the kids' vax records, I just said I was purposely delaying some, so they aren't up-to-date according to the recommended schedule. She seemed fine with that. We have to go to a nutritional class every once in a while here too, Rachel. I don't really mind going because some people REALLY don't know about that stuff and they really ought to. I got invited to an extra one to get vouchers for fruit stands! I'm excited about that. I just have to attend this one nutritional class and they'll give me vouchers for farmer's market for one month.

What kinds of things can you get?

Not sure yet. I think the voucher will say X pounds of fruit or vegetables. There are two fruit stands in town that I can turn them into. It's just a one time thing, I wish I could get fruit and veggies all the time. That's one of the reasons our grocery bill is so high...all those mangos and blueberries.

Fruits and veggies were just added to our WIC here. Hannah and I each get up to $5...fresh, frozen, or canned. It's a great addition (well...replacement...they reduced the amount of juice, but I'd rather have the fruits and veggies anyway. I've also heard they are replacing some of the eggs and peanut butter with canned or dried beans, adding whole grain breads, and adding jarred baby food for infants. Not sure when all those changes will be happening, but they were all on a poster with the title "Changes in WIC".

ORIGINAL: Mrs.Wifey I hate WIC. Well, I have a love hate relationship with the program. Gabby's 9 month appointment is today and I can't find her shot record, not that it would matter since it's not up to date anyway. I am so tired of the government's involvement in the choices I make for my child(ren). This is going to sound really bad, but I can't think of a better way to say it. If you're willing to accept government money, then why are you so upset about whatever conditions they place upon that money? Vaccinations are a public safety issue. I mean, I am grateful that the government keeps the roads maintained, but in return I accept that they get to make the rules for people who use those roads. It seems perfectly reasonable that if they're going to be giving out benefits, they place conditions on those benefits. I know I'm going to get some nasty responses, but I when we I was unemployed, I received benefits, but in return I had to prove that I was vigorously searching for work by keeping a detailed record of my job hunting activities. If someone is receiving aid for the sake of their children's health, it seems reasonable that they would ask about areas related to the child's health. For those who have good reason to delay or abstain from vaccinations, then those reasons can be documented on your file at WIC.

Ruth, I know you weren't addressing me but I'll just respond by saying you don't sound bad. I agree that when choosing to partake in a gov program like that, one has to realize that we are in fact letting them in on some of our business. I hesitated to go on WIC for that reason, but I just decided to take that risk. Like when they tell me what I "should and shouldn't give" my children at such and such age. I just take that info with a grain of salt. I pretty much asked for it, LOL.

You don't sound mean, Ruth, and I agree to a point. My biggest "gripe" is that NONE of them are medical professionals and yet they feel the need to try and usurp what Gabby's pediatrician and I have decided is the best thing for her health. We DO vaccinate, it's just not on the CDC schedule so she is getting them, and will continue to get them so I don't really think that it's a matter of public safety in our case. The only 2 she has not yet received are not things she would be passing anyway. My biggest gripe for today is the fact that they treat me like I know nothing about food allergies and they are the ones giving poor advice. The "nutritionist" told me that it would be fine to give her milk at 12 months It's like they think they are above the knowledge of a doctor. I'm not making stuff up when I say that she needs to wait, it's in written orders from her pediatric allergist and I TOOK them with me. Anyway...

I started a chat thread for the vaccine talk because I would like to have a place to bounce ideas and thoughts off of you all. No debates, please. Just sharing of info and what you will or won't do. HERE

Ahhhh, I see better now. Well, I'd say especially if you have written back up from your doctor about Gabby's health issues... so they're just being a bureaucracy. And while people have brains, bureaucracies do not. I can understand these WIC rules, but I also think the system should have some flexibility for children who don't fit the mold. It seems logical to me that if you bring in written support from your doc about why your girl can't have certain foods or certain vaccines at a specific time, then there should be some "give" in the system. Are they actually withholding benefits from you? Even with your doctor's support? Or do they just give you a hard time? When we lived in Bavaria, we had a fun way of getting milk. We'd go to the farmer's back door, drop off our milk bottle with our name on it, and come back later in the evening to find it filled. Repeat throughout the month as necessary. At the end of the month, I go to the front door and ask them how much I owed them; they look at their calender, and I pay 2 marks for every drop off. No pasteurization, and the bottles weren't even refrigerated until I brought them home to mom and dad. I loved small German farms, but if you think the American government taxes a lot and gets involved in people's business....

I've had similar problems, Ryanne. I do appreciate the program very much. What I do not appreciate is being talked down to, as though I am not an intelligent person. Some of their info they are trained in I do not agree with, and I do not like being told what to do with my children, especially when they are obviously clean, healthy, and well cared for every single time I am there. I could do their job, and who knows...maybe someday I will, when my kids don't need me at home full-time. I would love to be a lactation consultant with WIC. OTOH, I know they do see some people who really have no idea of how to feed their family healthy foods, or the benefits of breastfeeding. I try to remember that the workers there don't really know me and certainly don't know what information I do or don't know. ETA...only because this is on the WIC topic and not really vaccines...at my appointment Monday, the WIC worker told me I needed to bring shot records for the kids next time we come (no problem...I carry a copy in my purse). I informed them that they will not look up to date because there are some we are delaying and with the new baby, there may be some we don't do at all. The lady told me that was fine and they would just put it in my chart. I do plan to bring them a copy of the schedule we plan to do with the new baby, hopefully signed by our doctor, just to satisfy them, not because I have to.

What is WIC again? We don't have anything like that really here in Australia I don't think from what it sounds like.

It's a program that provides pregnant or nursing mothers and children under 5 with food supplements. We get most of Gabby's formula through the program. They also provide tuna, beans, peanut butter, milk, sometimes cheese, and juice depending on the childs age and whether you are pregnant or nursing.

I had a bit of a resentment for a while at the WIC lady for accusing me of givin Timmy a lot of fast food, but apparently a lot of parents do. Almost every time I go there I see a mom with pop from a fast food place and nuggets or french fries or something. At the hospital I had Timmy at had a policy to ask all mothers under the age of 23 a bunch of idiot questions and give a list of idiot advice like not to shake the baby and support the babies head, etc. But, the nurse told me beforehand that it was just protocol, so I wasn't offended. I know sometimes I have ahard time taking flack for my choices because I feel like I've worked so hard at seeking baby knowledge and researching and getting good sound advice from you ladies who research and seek sound advice. It's like "don't even tell me I could be wrong because I did the research, mmkay? 'The Man' pays your salaray and that's what he wants you to tell me." LOL

I think that's common for young mothers. Our hospital makes every mom (and every dad that they can) watch this awful video about shaken baby syndrome. I hate it because you're hormonal already and have to look at these precious babies who either died from it, or will always be vegetables. Other than that though, the nurses have left me alone for the last two babies. One even told me last time that she hopes we have more babies because our kids are obviously so loved and taken care of. That was so encouraging to me, especially considering how many people thought we should be done once we had our girl.

Our hospital didn't do anything like. Our hospital was wonderful and took care of my every need, never once making me feel like a idiot even though it was my first. They are very pro breastfeeding there so even the nurses took time when I was having issues if the LC on call was busy with another mother. It was a great experience! So, I know that Hunter has been able to comprehend certain things we say for a while now, but I am seeing that expand more and more. When I ask him if he wants to eat for example breakfast, he goes to his highchair and waits for me to put him in it. Yesterday I asked him if he wanted to swing and he walked right over to the swing. There are more examples, but it is truly amazing how much he does understand at such a young age. I think people don't give these little ones enough credit with how smart they are, including myself. So I have realized I don't give him enough credit during the times when he is disobeying. If he can understand when I ask if you want to swing then surely the boy understands "no touch". He keeps me hopping, thats for sure.

Donna, Isabel likes your avatar. quote:
They understand a ton more than they can verbalize at this age. Yes, and I love this age, because they are so little but seem so big when they understand things! If I say "bath" Isabel heads for the tub, "outside" she heads for the door and wants her shoes, "eat" she goes and sits in her booster, "diaper" she points to her basket of diapers, "spanking" she starts smacking stuff, etc. So funny! But just over the last few weeks she's really started communicating with words a lot. Now she'll actually say "baf", shoes, apple, drink, juice, h'dju (hold you).
