Sarah - did either one have trachealmalacia?

no...not that I know of...never heard of that word (I had to google it to find out what you meant). With Emma it was in the hospital...I was asleep on the bed, Paul was camped out on the extra bed in the room, Emma was in the bassinet thing. Paul woke up with a startle and just instinctively knew to look at her (GOD!!!)...when he did her lips were blue. He picked her up while running out of the room down to the nurses station and when he moved her she started breathing again. They had the NICU dr come up and check her out and he said that he couldn't find anything really wrong with her. He also said that some babies just don't regulate their breathing very well on their own...and that's what he thought it was related to. He said in cases like that he suggests holding the baby more (so their breathing regulates more easily) and not laying them down flat (cause that seems to be the most dangerous position for them to be in). She was a few months old before we could lay her down flat without her gasping for air. Jack never really stopped breathing like she did, but he would gasp for air like she did, so we just never laid him down either....and never really had it checked out (because it was never as serious as her problem).

Wow Sarah! That sounds so scary!

Y'all, I am reading a book that is soooo great. Parenting, Inc about how parenting/childhood/childrearing have become big, big business. I'm only about half-way through, but it's very interesting. From her comparisons, in terms of stuff we buy and use (and don't buy!) dh and I are more like 1950's parents. But I do understand how easy it is to get sucked into buying things for the kids, or agonizing over all the choices we have and guilt related to not getting enough, or not getting the "right" items.

Reading is getting me through yet another strange time with Biruk. I was so proud of being able to lay him down at night and him going to sleep by himself, but the kid seems totally buzzed every evening now, and is up and down in his bed, crying, talking, "singing", before he goes to sleep, and then waking every 2 hours again wanting to nurse. He's also cranky, but I don't know if he's cranky because of lack of sleep, of if something is causing the crankiness and the wakefulness!

Brandy - the swing has been a life saver for me. I put him in the swing when he was yooouunnggg. It bought me some time! He is just now starting ot like his bouncer. (btw, the film we took was his first time in the bouncer. That blue thing was a light that the bouncer has! It looks like a waterfall.)

Manda, Biruk's 12 months. Well, almost 13, I guess. I can see one tooth trying to poke through today, so maybe that's it.

Oh gosh yes, it will likely be those nasty big shark's teeth trying to come through at the back.

Sounds like a great book!!! I'm really struggling with a lot of this right now. DH and I want for very little, but we're definitely still a young couple with not a whole lot of stuff that matches . We have a chest of drawers for the nursery that was mine when I was little, but the drawers are SOOOOO tiny it barely fits anything, and it's just plain ugly . I want to buy new stuff, but we really can't afford it - and neither do we *need* to buy anything new - this dresser works just fine. It just, ya know, doesn't match the crib we have ... or the day bed that's going in the room, or, or, or. Sigh. Why does 'stuff' have to be so consuming?

Because it's stuff Kim. It's supposed to consume you!!

Seriously.

I've struggled with that growing up. We never had the money for matching bedroom sets. So my mom would save up some money and we'd go garage saling or thrift store hunting and find funky things that overall went together.

With the little one on the way I struggled with 'stuff'. We have the money to buy matching bedroom stuff but I really didn't want to. She's not going to know and I kind of like having odd paired items.

Her crib is pale pine colored, my glider is a deep cherry and her dresser is in the middle with an almost country flower scroll work on the front. All separate they look odd but together it's a nice match up.

I did draw the line at freakishly outlandish play stuff, like her swing. I could not get myself to buy the rainforest version, I got the milder, more neutral "nature's touch" baby swing, it fits in perfectly. Her stroller is a nice brown/orange/grey combo from Chicco and I need/want a matching diaper bag for it simply because I'm silly.

Heck maybe when your little one is old enough to tell it doesn't all seem brand new and matchy she can get into redoing pieces for her own tastes with your guys help?

Is it also partially due to your being so close to due date that you are getting some serious nesting and nerves going? I'm trying to balance mine.

Maggie - I may get that book just to see where we fall in the spectrum.

My biggest thing for 'matching stuff' is sheets. Most of our furniture is relatively the same color scheme, though different manufacturers. But growing up I *hated* that I didn't have a matching comforter and sheet set. So, of course as soon as we could afford it, when we were first married, that's what I went out and got!

paint is cheap Kim!!!!
I am one of those people that can't stand disorganization. Things need to look neat and orderly for me to be able to function properly...and one of my quirks is furniture. I need it to be functional AND the room to look nicely put together when it is clean or else I can't handle it all and start shutting down, not cleaning as often, etc. Some people can live with the college dorm look their whole lives and be happy, but I can not. However we don't have the money to afford expensive furniture either. most (90% at least) of what we have has come from the trash finds or people giving us stuff that they didn't want/need anymore. I have found that my best "friend" is paint....it's amazing how well things go together when you just paint them all out the same color.

You are not alone in struggling with stuff that doesn't match. I FINALLY finished his nursery yesterday and I Love it! I want to post the video link here, but it's not 'baby' related so I guess I'll have to find the nursery thread. lol

Can I ask a car seat question in here?

Hope so.. so we got this travel system. I was reading the manual last night as Jeremy was putting it together and found out that you can install JUST the carseat in your vehicle, NOT the base everytime...

Does anyone do that? Just use a belt to secure the seat portion and NOT use the base??

Why and/or why not?

By the way, WOW does it smell of plastic. I wish we had gotten it sooner so it would have longer to air out. It's STRONG smelling. bleh. may put it on the porch for a few hours when we aren't under 'storm watch 2008' aka drizzle warning.

I found the base to be very convenient when taking the carrier in and out of the car. Ours was very easy to pop in and pop out so we always used the base unless we took a ride in hubby's car. We didn't have an extra base so we would just use the seat belt for those occasions. I think everyone has their own preference when it comes to this though.

Brandy - Okay, I Love your taste. DEFINITELY put the base in! It's Wonderfully convenient to just pop that car seat in and out of the base. I actually found/feel it's safer that way, but that could just be me.

We leave the base in the van and if the carseat gets put in any other car, we don't use the base.

yes quite often we have used just the seat...for different reasons. Things like taking a cab, riding the bus and going to town then going to be walking around town and can't carry the base, air travel where we don't need to have to carry the whole base, not having the vehicle that has the base in it....etc. We have two infant seats with the base, and have had two others years ago (for some reason it has worked out that we got a new one for each kid...lol) and each seat has been different in whether we liked it best with or without the base. If you are going to be using two vehicles equally I would invest in a second base...but for occasional times I wouldn't worry about it.

Here's part of why I asked.. We have a pick up truck. Right now it's in the shop so we can't test it but with the base the only place we can put it is the front passenger with the airbag turned off. I'm wondering if just the seat will fit in the back rear facing. I can't remember which part of the set up was causing the problem.

Hope to have truck back tuesday/wednesday and that's the first thing we are doing.

Brandy...how the seat fits in (the angle) that the base puts it in is the same angle the seat needs to be in if you are not using the base...otherwise it is not installed properly. The base just keeps it angled right and allows you to not have to buckle it in every time, just snap it into the base. However if it won't fit properly installed in a seat with the base, then I highly doubt it would fit properly installed without the base.

That's what I'm afraid of. Tho to me for some reason it seems easier in my head to buckle the seat in each time than having to fiddle with the base each time. Well, not each time, but often enough with having to cram a person into the back seat that it may be worth letting that person in and whoever is driving can load baby and seat in and not the base?

The proof will be in the pudding.

I watched a good video on how to install the seat with babe and w/o babe and she had a cool triangle thing to show you the right angle. I'm not totally sure but the seat may have a level on it too to show you proper angle.

We leave the base in the car, and just use the seatbelt over the car seat in the truck.

It might fit in the back seat without the base. I think (in our set anyway) that the base makes the car seat sit a bit more forward than the seat alone. What kind of truck is it Brandy?

We just put the car seat in the front seat of our truck between us. It's too old to have air bags

We have put it in the back seat of the truck before though. And yes, it's probably easier to use the seatbelt instead of switching the base every time, especially if it's only occasionally.
