Very cool, His!

zoebob -> RE: May Flowers Homeschool Chat!! (5/1/2008 12:46:43 PM)

Well, emotionally she seemed to do OK. After the first day she went in easily and even the first day wasn'[t too bad. SHe said she did a lot of guessing. THe question is if they were educated guesses or not. I'm sure she had some problem with math. SHe is still struggling to learn her times tables and so we haven't done much with multi-digit multiplication..much less division. We'll see.

SHe said she liked the grammar/writing parts better than math. THere weren't any tears over it once she got in the classroom onMonday.

WEll, I am supposed to be working; Had DD at the school at 8:!5. From there went to my first cleaning job. Now at my parents for the other one (I have a little time to spare here), then back to the school from 3:15-5:30. If it doesn't rain DS has t-ball from 5:30-7. Grandpa will take him to that. SOmewhere in there I'm supposed to plan and have dinner?!?!

I think we may get hamburgers from BK: can do that cheaper than going to the store and getting everything I would need.

If you're in the first group of stimulus rebate direct deposits...check your account. Ours magically appeared today, and we got the full amount I had hoped we would![:D]

cindybode -> RE: May Flowers Homeschool Chat!! (5/1/2008 4:32:27 PM)

Summer plans . . . hmmm. I don't know if I'm working Memorial Day or not - the schedule is out, I just didn't look because frankly I don't care one way or the other.

All of my own kids plus our guest plus one of Patrick's friends-who-might-be-able-to-visit-for-a-couple-weeks want to go to Cedar Point this summer. Can anyone say cha-ching? [sm=dollars.gif][sm=dollars.gif][sm=dollars.gif] I think we can swing it if we start now. I get discount tickets through work, and if I buy a couple per paycheck it will hurt less than having it hit all at once. I am not going - I will drop them off at the gate and take the $70 that my dh and I would have to spend for the privledge of walking around the park (I am not a rider, and dh might go on a few but not a lot) and go do something I really wanna do. If they all go there will be 4 people over the age of 18 in the group and they should be more than capable of looking out for the 3 who are not.

Erin and Brandon are also going to our church's summer getaway this year - it's at a Christian camp somewhere in Michigan.

Our lawn tractor - yes, the one we just spent big bucks on - will not start. [:@] My dh is so not happy, and I'm not too thrilled myself. We are going to take it back tomorrow. I cannot afford to spend huge amounts of money on something that isn't going to run. It started right up to get it on and off the trailer, and my dh mowed for a bit and then shut it off so Brandon could mow. It wouldn't start for Brandon, and hasn't started since. If it is going to be too much more money it might make more sense to just trade it for something else. We'll let Joe tinker with it and then see what his recommendations are. It's just incredibly frustrating.

Jenny-Fair -> RE: May Flowers Homeschool Chat!! (5/1/2008 4:49:16 PM)

The temp agency just called. They are submitting me for a job that pays nearly as well as my last one. It is agricultural, but office work. It is supposed to last awhile..from the type of business, I am figuring probably through summer. Please pray.

PrincessDonna -> RE: May Flowers Homeschool Chat!! (5/1/2008 4:50:48 PM)

You got it, Jen!

Cindy, was there any kind of warranty or lemon law like when you buy a car? Most places have at least a 30 day, don't they?? That's annoying.[:@]

his_chosen -> RE: May Flowers Homeschool Chat!! (5/1/2008 5:01:46 PM)

Jennifer--that's great!

Donna--hey, I"m doing MY part to stimulate the economy! Two new tires for my bike ($55 each!), a tri suit, arm warmers, and shorts and arm warmers for ds1. Last night I went shopping and bought 3 new swim suits. Being a triathlete is expensive!!!

We lost a baby. I don't know what happened, but there's only one baby in the nest. The two other eggs haven't hatched yet. Momma is no where to be found, but she frequently does that. They're only robins, but I so hope they make it!

I think we are in the second group! I think we will fill the van up and maybe have enough left over to drive to Mickey D's.[:D][:D][:D] hmm, maybe this would be a good time to look at books for next year!! [:D]

Cindy, hope you get the mower fixed!![:D]
his, praying the little birds make it.
Jen, praying you get a good job!!

Sue, Oklahoma in July!!! Make sure your AC on your car is charged!!! [:@][:@] Just ask Amy she will know how hot it gets!!! [sm=fireanger.gif][sm=fireanger.gif][sm=fireanger.gif]

his_chosen -> RE: May Flowers Homeschool Chat!! (5/1/2008 5:39:45 PM)

I found the baby. It had fallen out of the nest and was lying on the deck. It was cold, but still moving. So I held it until it warmed up, then put it back in the nest. A third egg is hatching. Momma had come back and was scolding away!

2jsmom -> RE: May Flowers Homeschool Chat!! (5/1/2008 5:42:42 PM)

Praying, Jen.

We thought it would be the week of the 4th, but didn't count orientation. Looks like it will be the second or third week of July. We'd better take the car because the AC in the back of van doesn't work.

Our tractor repair guy is a local Amishman who's as honest as the day is long. He'll make it right. It's just really, really annoying.

2jsmom -> RE: May Flowers Homeschool Chat!! (5/1/2008 6:12:23 PM)

Isn't tractor repair a rather odd occupation for an Amish person? The ones around here don't even use tractors.

PrincessDonna -> RE: May Flowers Homeschool Chat!! (5/1/2008 6:34:29 PM)

Maybe he's Mennonite and not Amish? Mennonites here drive cars and use tractors.

The amount of technology an Amishman is allowed to use is determined by the district elders. In our district, they are permitted to use things such as phones, computers, and engines, in their businesses that they are not allowed to use in their homes. Many districts are beginning to accept the fact that it's just not possible to make a living with a small farm these days - if they don't allow their members to use at least some technology for business purposes, they are essentially sentencing them to a life of poverty. Although most Amish would define "poverty" differently that we might, they still need a way to make money.

PrincessDonna -> RE: May Flowers Homeschool Chat!! (5/1/2008 7:15:30 PM)

Interesting...

cindybode -> RE: May Flowers Homeschool Chat!! (5/1/2008 7:21:58 PM)

Most of the Amish around us have jobs these days - they are either working for someone else at least part time or they have their own businesses in construction, tractor repair, etc.

PrincessDonna -> RE: May Flowers Homeschool Chat!! (5/1/2008 7:24:27 PM)

So the ones in your district can also use power tools for construction?

cindybode -> RE: May Flowers Homeschool Chat!! (5/1/2008 7:41:13 PM)

I think so, as long as the construction is a job. I don't know about constructing their own houses. I'd have to ask my neighbor.

2jsmom -> RE: May Flowers Homeschool Chat!! (5/1/2008 8:25:49 PM)

I didn't know that. The Amish around here may ride in cars, but not drive them. They'll do construction or demolition work for people, but as far as I know, they do it all without power tools. Maybe they can use them if the tools belong to someone else and they use them on the job.

It does make sense that things vary a lot. We recently met a man who's family had left the Amish community. He started reading his Bible and couldn't agree with their teachings. He had come from Canada and had metal grain bins on his farm up there. He got permission from his local elders to have them here, but once they were up, the elders decided that only wood was acceptable for grain bins. He still looks Amish, but he drives a car and has a cell phone.

Jake called!!!!!!!!!!!

Somehow he lost his driver's license. He had it when he got there and lost it during processing. They said he's OK for now since they have it on file, but will need to get a new one after AIT if it doesn't turn up. I can't imagine that someone would throw something like that away, so I hope it turns up.

his_chosen -> RE: May Flowers Homeschool Chat!! (5/1/2008 8:56:56 PM)

Three babies!!! All of them are looking strong!

Ds1 has a job. The neighbor is going back to work and needs someone to potty the dogs. Ds1 is the one that everyone is turning to when they need odd jobs done.

We should finish testing tomorrow. If not, ds4 will finish on Monday.

What do you mean in July!!! We're already using the A/C in the house & have had to use it in the cars a few times![8D] We charged up all 3 vehicles - unfortunately it seems dh's car has a leak & it's all gone now![:@][:@] Some of our stimulus check may go for that! We're in the last group so I think it will be 16 May according to the IRS site.

Jen - praying about the job!

His - hope the babies make it OK. Our neighbor has a nest in their yard, we need to go over & see the babies.

Cindy - praying for your tractor!

Sue - SO glad you heard from Jake!! Praying they find his drivers license!!

Glad everyone's testing is going well.

We don't have any huge plans for Memorial Weekend. We may go up to visit dh's family (3 hours away). My parents will be in town next week (dd will be 10 & get her military ID - a big right of passage for a military kid, but sad for her momma[:(])! Dh will be going back to work on the 9th (next Friday), unless he can get a day of leave since my folks will be in town then he'd be going back on Monday the 12th. We're all sort of looking forward to getting back to a routine!! BUT - it has been nice having him around!!! We even went to the wilderness park & took a loooong walk while the kids were at PE yesterday! That was nice!

cindybode -> RE: May Flowers Homeschool Chat!! (5/1/2008 10:09:25 PM)

The Amish here don't drive either. I don't know of anywhere that allows that. Otherwise, things can really vary quite a bit. For instance, in our district everyone may have a phone at their business. Just over the line in Ohio, they can't. The buggies here are the solid black ones that most think of when they think Amish buggy, but southwest of here they are a square wagon type, brown on the bottom and white on top. It can be quite interesting to note the differences if you're looking for them.

Patrick has a job interview on Monday. It's just a local gas station but at least it would give him some cash.

ezri -> RE: May Flowers Homeschool Chat!! (5/1/2008 10:28:54 PM)

Sue- Glad Jake called and is doing well! We are waiting for a dear friend to get his call to ship out with Uncle Sams Navy. he is on pins and needles right now and is "lady friend" is on an emotional roller coaster.

His- Awesome about the babies and that the momma birdy has returned and is being attentive.

My dentist appt went BLAH- double Blah. I felt like I was shaking all over before he was done with me. After the appt he was chatting with Jerry about my extractions and partial. They have come to the conclusion that I will need to have them all out at the same time- They are talking a drug called halcyon(sp?) to knock me out. he reports that I will be lucid but not remember ANYTHING that happens while this drug does it's work. Jerry is willing to pay out of pocket to make it happen before he leaves. before they had me schedules to have the extractions after he left. One side toward the end of the year and the other side after the first so we could use my 1200 allowable on our insurance as I am gonna max out after the extractions on the one side and that is with us buying the valium for the appts not us paying for the Halcyon stuff.

yeah- My husband has been told I need a Legal guardian capable of making decisions with me at all my appts. I am that bad folks. They won't see me unless he comes in and holds my hand. I was dizzy from holding my breath and near tears today.

Other news? We are getting a water treatment system installed next week. [:D] jerry has figured out how much we are spending on bottled water and is going with a Rain Soft whole house system + the reverse osmosis under the sink drink station as well. This means that he is in the kitchen at present putting in a new countertop and sink. He said that it needed to be done before they came in to do the under sink install because they'd charge us to come out and re-do it when we did replace the sink.

WELL- nothing is ever as easy as it should be.

#1 Nothing in a mobile home is standard. To include counter top depth.
#2 when pulling out the cabinetry make sure that the section the pipes go through is CUT to allow said pipes to stay put while the rotted water logged pressed board board moves with the cabinets
#3 When removing tile from drywall that is taller that the back splash on the new counter top listen tto your wife and take extra time to be careful not to GAUGE the drywall.

yeah- So far we are HE IS having to:

-re-plumb the entire under sink area (he likes this and is good at it, no worries)
-Patch 3 areas where he gouged the drywall (lets say he ripped 2 sections out the length and width of 2 tiles each and the other is a single tile area- He is okay at this type of repair only he hates to wait for the patch to cure.)
- Build a frame for the drawer cabinetry because he got a bit overzealous when he pulled the cabinet out and the bars across the back popped loose. [8|]

He already knew he'd have to put a 2x4 the length of the cabinet top and bottom to fill the 1" area behind the cabinet. SIGH he is gonna be up LATE ladies- Say a prayer for him because we currently have no cut off under the sink meaning he has ZERO water in the house and 4 sons that are being about as useless as teats on a boar hog.

misaham -> RE: May Flowers Homeschool Chat!! (5/1/2008 11:02:16 PM)

By the way- it is Thursday night, and still nothing legally happening from hubby's former boss. PRAISE THE LORD!!! His new employer has assured us that we do not need to hire an attorney and they will back us up if anything happens. Hubby got his final paycheck in the mail today, and we were so relieved! We did not know if they were going to drag their feet or make it more difficult for us.
He still has several vacation days left, and they did say that he would get paid for them. We are hoping to get another check for those shortly.
We should have the house on the market by middle-to-late next week. Once we get that done he will head up to Cleveland to start the new job. Please pray that house will sell in a timely manner. We are going to aggressively market and price it so we are not stuck here for months and months...

2jsmom -> RE: May Flowers Homeschool Chat!! (5/1/2008 11:23:49 PM)

Ezri, I'm glad the appointment is over and that Jerry is so understanding. I hope they'll be able to get everything done before he leaves.
