1970rodney -> Trios, hairstyles, and suits (5/1/2008 10:44:10 PM)

Hey I'm kinda new and was just wandering about something? I see a lot of references to some great Quartet groups in these forum but how do people feel about groups like the Mcraes, Lordsong,Mike and Kelly Bowling,Austins Bridge,Crossway, and Hope's Call. I know they break the mold a little bit in their style of music but I think it's great and lyrically speaking better than a lot of what we're getting from the standard groups in the top 80 today. I know Mister Roy Pauley thinks they're an abomination to southern gospel because they don't wear suits and some of their hairstyles don't fit his mold but how big a deal is this people? Just curious?[8|]

TQ_Fan_4_Life -> RE: Trios, hairstyles, and suits (5/1/2008 10:50:10 PM)

I for one love mixed groups and trios. I love Austin's Bridge and Crossway. Mcrae's as well. Annie grew up real close to me. like a few miles away.

as for hairstyles well, I go against the grain(((not cause as bald))) but I don't fit the normal mold. My Pastor here preaches a lot of times in sandals and a dress shirt and jeans((even seen him preach one sunday in jeans and a tshirt. and well, Church avg.'s about 700 a service on Sunday morning. so we do pretty good. sandals u say, well don't let the sandal's fool ya brother. hehehehe.

honestly, God in my opinion isnt looking at your clothes((unless just absolutely immodest)) but at your heart.

Jeff_from_Kentucky -> RE: Trios, hairstyles, and suits (5/1/2008 10:57:16 PM)

I definitely don't care about hairstyles. After all, I love Guy Penrod! [:D]

I like some mixed groups but not all of them. I love Karen Peck and New River and the Isaacs. I didn't really care for the one project that I have from the Crabb Family but several people have told me that their final project was not typical of their music so I will listen to some of their older stuff when I get a chance. I have a couple of old Hinsons projects that I really like.

As far as suits are concerned, I personally prefer them because I think they look more respectful and professional but I will not avoid seeing someone just because they choose not to wear a suit. I agree with TQ, God is looking at your heart, not your clothes or hair.

MSnurse -> RE: Trios, hairstyles, and suits (5/1/2008 11:50:13 PM)

Well I'm new too....however, In my opinion (sorry for the Pauley Pun[:D]) it is truly an unfortunate distraction to focus on what one wears and how they style it. It is more important to bear witness with the spirit of the group for that's when the message of the song is heard. For that reason, over the last 10 years I have preferred Trios/Mixed groups to other styles...hey, you don't get any better than LordSong and Austin's Bridge or my dear friends Annie and Kelly (just a side note, since this topic is somewhat about appearances have ya every noticed how much their father looks like George Bush[:D])

Seaton -> RE: Trios, hairstyles, and suits (5/2/2008 7:34:01 AM)

You mentioned some of my current favorite artists when you mentioned CrossWay, Austins Bridge, Mike & Kelly Bowling and Lordsong. I really enjoy the modern country sounds of CrossWay and Austins Bridge. Mike & Kelly are keeping that Hinson music alive and Lordsong is really in a league of their own when talking about harmony.

*Mike & Kelly Bowling's current hit "Your Cries Have Awoken The Master" is my current favorite song.

Same here, it's #1 in my Itunes Top 25 [:)]

I do draw a line somewhere when an artist goes "over-the-top" with appearance, but generally, if they put out a good cd (i.e. Crossway's "A Beautiful Thing") I can at least enjoy them on my ipod. [:)]

upnorthguy -> RE: Trios, hairstyles, and suits (5/2/2008 1:00:07 PM)

Its an age thing for the most part. I like the Traditional look and sound and I am older and have followed SG music all my life. The younger like more "non traditional dress and hair". It carries over to the P&W music in churches vs. the hymns and whether they should be "on the wall" or not. There needs to be another genre (sp) called something other then "Southern", or maybe that term should be eliminated because it confuses some folks. What I don't like is when new groups show their publicity pictures and try to look "mean" with sloppy clothes, and wrinkled up faces. These groups usually don't last long, but reach a few people during their existance. I can appreciate Lordsong for their musical QUALITY and good song selections. I have heard some of Austin's Bridge and there are some good singers there, however their appeal will be only to a younger set and that is apparently what they want. I wouldn't drive to see them though. I do believe that all gospel music fans need to work on understanding each other's tastes. I can try to appreciate your music if you can try to appreciate mine. I can try to understand P&W music if you can try to appreciate hymns.

jabird41 -> RE: Trios, hairstyles, and suits (5/2/2008 1:18:55 PM)

I am a "youngin" that has loved SG all my short life. I was introduced of course to just plain old traditional southern gospel... suits and ties, etc. I love the traditional still and I love the "newer modern" stuff just as much. My two favorite groups are Triumphant Quartet (about as traditional as it can be) and Crossway (other end of the spectrum) and I love them and their music equally...sometimes it's a fight between the groups on who is my MOST favorite. [:D] I just love good singing and songs about Jesus. That's all that matters. I don't care what their hair looks like or what their clothes look like. As long as they are letting God show through what they are doing and letting Him lead their lives...I'm all for them. [:)]

I have to disagree with several parts of your post.

I am I guess middle of the rung((36)) but my dad just turned 69 this year. He is more the traditional suit/tie/hair just right and all. But I think he loves Austin's Bridge and Crossway about as much as I do. Their music does not appeal to only the younger set.

I love Praise and Worship and I love Hymns equally.

I havent seen any pics with wrinkled faces, have seen some with pics other than suits, and if saw my earlier post well, I go against the grain on the suit thing. I kinda see it the way my Pastor does. Jesus wore sandals. and as the song by Triumphant Qt says((and is hard to find a more traditional group than them)) Don't Let The Sandals Fool Ya Brother

It is all a matter of taste. I do believe that if we all respect each other and try to understand why a certain artist appeals to us and not to others and vice versa then we're ok. I really don't agree with the age thing either. Again, it comes down to personal tastes in music. My mother is an avid Southern Gospel music supporter. She saw the Blackwood Bros. w/ JD Sumner and The Speers when Mom and Dad were still traveling (so she supports the traditional side of Southern Gospel music). But, she also enjoys modern groups like CrossWay and Crabb Revival.

Billboy -> RE: Trios, hairstyles, and suits (5/2/2008 5:26:53 PM)

Southern Gospel was built on 4-part harmony, but with that said, I also like trios, mixed or otherwise, very much. As for dress, I think there is something nice and honoring about suits, matching or sport coat ensembles, but again I like the artists who dress more casually, too. Basically, if the music is good and the spirit is good, then I am good. [:D]

I am one of those "really cool" moms who loves the traditional quartets but I really love going to concerts featuring CrossWay, the Crabb kids, and other somewhat less traditional ones also. I have not seen Austins Bridge in concert yet, but their CD is probably the one that gets most play in my van. I respect everyone's right to like a different style of music than what I like. Like my Dad used to say, "if we all liked the same thing, all men would want to marry the same woman." I am so glad there is a variety out there so each of us can find what it is that we want to support.

I agree there should another type of genre. When I tell some of my friends and coworkers "Hey listen to this" They say "What is it?". When I say it's southern gospel they just stare and say no way. Don't get me wrong my favorite quartets right now and their new cds get ALOT of play in the suv is Brian Free and Assurance and Gold City. But even their style has changed quite a bit from traditional southern gospel. I do want the groups we listen to to look decent and not half clothed and it is nice to see them smile too. I guess it just seemed like the past few years certain individuals seemed to like to throw off on the new groups every chance they had and it always seemed like clothing and hair was their biggest issues. Yet they never seemed to hear the message GOD was delivering through these people. And unlike him I don't care to call out his name Roy Pauley. Thanks for all the response it is good to hear some positive feedback for once.[:D]
