My home was burglarized about three weeks ago. I'm considering a home security system and wondered if anyone has any input. I do hesitate to have to pay $30 every month!

I don't have any experience with them, but I'd say that if you feel safer having one, and if the $30 a month seems like it would go to a good use, then I'd definitely go for it.

We had one installed about a year ago. We went with Brinks. The ADT rep was just horrible!! I like having it because my husband travels a LOT and I like knowing that I will know if someone breaks in (although I'm sure I would have a heart attack, but that's another issue! lol). If you can afford it, I recommend it.

We've had one in our home for several years. I think they are good to have but don't be fooled into a false sense of security. Burglars can "smash and grab" in less time it takes for the authorities to show up. In addition to an alarm you might consider a dog. Indoor or outdoor. One that will bark when strangers are near or the doorbell is rung. Burglars don't like attention getting things like barking dogs. Also, consider your landscaping. If you have trees or shrubs blocking windows or doors this prevents them from being seen by the neighbors. Speaking of neighbors, they can be the best defense system. Being the victim of a break in you could start a neighborhood watch program. The neighbors may be eager to start one with you so they won't be the next victims.

And do tell you neighbors if you get one. I have opened the back door to let the dog out and forgot to disable the alarm.... Good Morning Neighbors!!! (blush)

No alarm system is fool proof. We have one on this house. It went off once when we were not home and the security company called us while we were out. Nothing turned up missing. Thieves could have grabbed stuff and gotten away but the neighbors would have started looking if the alarm didn't turn off after a moment or two. Who needs that attention.

Our cost is $22.

We went with Brink's in January. I had a friend who was broken into while he was home, 2 days before Christmas. Then the neighbor across the street had a burglary in the autumn. Its' $35/mo.

The initial installation requires a contract for a couple of years. After that, if you don't renew, you still have the system but it doesn't notify the police. It only makes a noise when someone enters while the system is armed.

We don't always have it on but I am glad we have it.
